Today I wish I had two blogs.

One where we could drink coffee and talk about the super bowl commercials and what we thought and how we all agree that the puppy and the Budweiser horse commercial completely stole the show.

And how I love John Stamos and his hair and his yogurt and all his Full House Friends.

And what was up with that spray tan Go Daddy ad that was completely and utterly random.

And then we would need a thirty minute discussion on the Seinfeld commercial that was totally Seinfeld….

…..and totally awkward.

I mean….really…..I think George was wearing make-up.

And as scintillating and exciting and funny and over-the-top as the ads were and if you happen to tell me which ad you liked the best….

….I would be all ears.

But this is the decorating blog….and today is about color.

And wishing that we all had a purple room.

Library_Room_Thistlewood_Farm_thumb.jpg

A purple room is a must if you have a yellow room with yellow flowers and beautiful gray damask curtains…

…and you have loved it.

Optimum word being loved.

As in past tense.

As in 2013.

It’s kind of like the Dorothy Hamill haircut that you begged your mom for when you were younger.

Fun and cute and perky…albeit a little bowl-like.

But then Christy Brinkly came along…..

….and you were so ready for a change.

From this….

…to this.

It’s totally Christy Brinklyesk and the perfect transition room for almost spring.

Especially since there are about 5 inches of snow just outside the window.

It’s the perfect room for a fire and a warm throw and a good book and a cup of coffee and a little conversation….

….topped off with a side of purple.

More specifically…..Sherwin Williams Color of the Year:  Exclusive Plum.

Here’s all about the transformation.

decorating-ideas-for-the-color-of-the-year

1.  I started with the paint color.

The base of the table was painted SW Exclusive Plum.

The top of the table was painted SW Down Home.

I had a brilliant, overwhelmingly creative idea to paint a wood grain table top.

{gulp}

Ummmm…..negative.

Not my finest project hour.

2.  Add fabric

I found this P. Kaufmann Hip Berry fabric from Online Fabric Store that matched perfectly.

Just a yard.

Just the perfect amount of purple.

I used it to make two pillows.

 3.  Re-purpose

I took the gray iron piece off the wall and turned it sideways on the mantle.

The wood berries are left over from fall.

Then I just added a few more berries with some purple flowers in wicker urns and added a piece of architecture that came off one of the peaks of the roof in an attempt to find a purple room with a mantel.

4.  A little color and texture

For a little unexpected pop of color….

…..I took another fabric….Waverly Luminary Lilac and just tucked it over the back of the chairs….behind the pillows.

It’s an easy way to add a little purple to a chair.

And the burlap curtains that make me wish I had a burlap curtain factory in my back yard…. so I could sell curtains to everyone who asks me about them and send my children to college one day….

….they found a new home in this room.

decorating-ideas-for-the-color-of-the-year-how-toI didn’t spend a fortune for the room.

And I didn’t spend a lot of time to get a whole new look.

I mean….remember…..I’m a house shopper.

If it wasn’t snowing I would be shopping by the side of the road.

Everything else in the room came from somewhere else in the house.

It just decided to move up to a new purple zip code.  🙂

PS  The Super Bowl is over and the game was….well….a disappointment.

Good thing I taped Downton Abbey for later. 🙂

full disclosure:  I was compensated by Sherwin Williams and Online Fabric Store but all opinions

on the fabric and paint are completely my own.  Please see my disclosure policy for more information.

I too think the Budweiser puppy commercial was the best. So many of the commercials made no sense. The Go Daddy were the worst! I had seen a number of the ads (puppy one :)) days before.....why pay big bucks to have your ad run during Super Bowl when they've been seen already? Kept waiting for the Budweiser puppy and it wasn't until the 2 minute warning. Wonder how many had quit watching by this time? Pretty lopsided game. Love what you've done to your room. Just the right amount of purple...gorgeous!

Oh, just love the pop of purple! its a great feeling when just a little bit of color can lift the winter blues and send them right out the window! Makes you want to do every room, right? I'm heading down that road this week!! lol! Last nights game was a disappointment......and its snowing - again here in PA! I think I need a BIG dose of Purple! Stay warm......

  3. Image for Marisa Franca Marisa Franca

Well, I have a confession to make -- we did not watch the game, but we had a good reason. We live in Indiana and we are Peyton fans. The few times we watched the Colts play they lost. So...we were rooting for Peyton cuz he's practically a Hoosier and we didn't want him to loose. Ergo, we didn't watch the game. Unfortunately it sounds like we missed some cute commercials. KariAnne I love your purple. You are one savvy lady!! And those touches of fabric gives it the punch. I wish I had my sewing machine here but my Honey will allow only so much in the SUV when we escape to the warmer weather. I'm trying to talk him into a trailer to lug behind the SUV. There are so many wonderful consignment and antique stores down here and if I found THE thing I wouldn't be able to buy it :-) Have a wonderful day, spring is just around the corner.

I think the room is and was beautiful......... and I truly do not see a big whoop on either..... they are both gorgeous and I would be thrilled to have even close to either...... YEP.

I felt so bad fif Peyton. Owie, the whole game was painful. Yes, I always love the Clydesdales, and that puppy! But, I also thought the Heinz Ketchup commercial was cute. No wonder you are all about that fabric. The colors and pattern are great.

  6. Image for Lisa Lisa

Loved the Puppy- Budweiser Commercial. Loved more was the Mountain Dew Commercial, it had more surprised action than the game. That is all Im going to say about that few hours of TV. Really Loved your room transformation. I love color but for some reason Purple is one of the colors that I can not enjoy in great amounts. I like the way you have it peaking out througout the room. It enhances the room and allows you to look at each area with a new eye.

    1. Image for Liz Thomas Liz Thomas

I agree, I'd love to see the burlap curtains edged with a 4"strip of the purple fabric, awesome! And while I know you and others were sad about the game, my grandkids are part of the 12th man so I'm a 12th man "grammie". I loved that the team was so young, that should inspire underdogs everywhere! I felt sad for the Broncos.

  7. Image for Jenna Jenna

I love instant gratification decorating!! Looks wonderful, loving that plum table base~I thought most of the adds were pretty edgy, but did love love the puppy, sniff sniff and always love Jerry and George~

  8. Image for Mary Alice Kenley Mary Alice Kenley

I love the subtlety of the room. The wall color doesn't shout, "This is the purple room!" The barkcloth pillow is the perfect kickoff for the room. (Can't believe I just used a football term...sorry.) And you're right; it didn't take a ton of money or time. Congratulations!

  9. Image for Regina Merrick Regina Merrick

Love your purple! Subtle, but a nice change from Christmas, right? ;) I'm going house-shopping today! I mean, shopping for stuff WITHIN my house . . Because it is a SNOW DAY for me, too! Yippee!!!

  10. Image for Maury Maury

I've missed you! So last night I was on Pinterest and saw one of your links, pinned it I pf course and then went to read the article. As I was reading, I realized how much you always make me smile and I've mussed it! So nice I'm on email and won't have to miss you anymore.

  11. Image for Mary Mary

Purple is my daughter's favorite color so I will definitely be showing her this room. I'm already picturing her bedroom with these colors! I'm glad I saw the puppy commercial earlier because I was one of those that gave up. I felt so bad for Manning and the Broncos.

  12. Image for Donnamae Donnamae

Puppy/Budweiser was a real hit...I also really liked that Chrysler commercial...about being made in America! Now as to purple...because this is a decorating blog as you pointed out...you've added just the right amount. I'm not really a purple gal, but those pillows are gorgeous...and just the right amount of purple! ;)

  13. Image for Mary House Mary House

Love your room and your style, and I wish I had your get up and go attitude. I am trying to decide on a gray paint that has beige undertones. My furnishings tend to be toward the red/brown hues, from your vast experience, what gray paint would you recommend?

  14. Image for BrocanteuseRose BrocanteuseRose

"Shopping by the side of the road" hahaha perfect! I am going into digging through other peoples trash withdrawal. lol

  15. Image for Jennifer Jennifer

Love the room, love the blog, and I have to mention the Radio Shack ad... from someone who remembers the 80's, I thought that was pretty cute! Although the puppy one was my fave!

  16. Image for Polly Polly

What a mess last night was! I, too live in Indiana and was hoping for a Peyton night. I think the first play of the game set the tone:( Anyway, love the Budweiser commercial, and did you notice that Miss Piggy said "cool beans!" I'm not a big purple fan, but you have hit just the right touch. MORE snow on the way, 5-9 inches with sleet, stay warm!!

  17. Image for Shannon M. Shannon M.

I have a purple room!!!! Long story short~ Army family owns a home in AL stationed somewhere ALOT colder!!! (It's 6 degrees this am). We spent Thanksgiving break in AL painting a few rooms. We went with grey, and the boys really love it. BUT I needed something softer and light, so I choose a soft pale purple. I LOVE it!!! Had no idea it would be the color of the year. It was a terrible football year all around for us. We are huge SEC fans and watched it all fall apart this year!! One of our friends is married into the Manning family so we have always been Manning fans!! ( I watched him win a national championship in 1998 for TN!) yes that dates me, I also had the Dorothy Hamill haircut...baaahaaahaaa!!! The commercials were disappointing as well. I loved the coming home commercial from Budweiser. I wish it had been a bit longer. Did the puppy really beat out the soldier and his mom? The horse and puppy was wonderful!!! I love your fabric... I need it..lol. Going to search for some online!!!! You are amazing!!!

  18. Image for Bliss Bliss

I'm not really a purple kind of gal, or Dorthy Hamel, or blond like Brinkley, but I could talk about those commercials yesterday and how most of them made no sense to me.

  19. Image for Missy Missy

I've always loved those curtains but I don't think they go with the purple...That pillow print would be pretty..??Maybe too much?? Greys rather than browns?? Just a thought... I've always been a Budweiser/Clydesdale fan..

  20. Image for Melanie Miller Melanie Miller

I also loved the Doritos commercials and the GoldieBlocks commercial. I thought there were a LOT of car ads and my 13 yr old son's comment was, "why spend $4 million dollars and NOT make a funny commercial? That's ridiculous!" Your purple-hinted room is beautiful. Can I come drink a glass of tea in that room? Then we could discuss the commercials. :)

  21. Image for Tracy Smith Tracy Smith

We loved the game here, since we live in Oregon, it was Nice to see the Seahawks get to the Super Bowl and WIN! Yay!! I too loved the Budweiser commercials - there were two. One with the puppy and Clydesdale's and one with the soldier coming home. Really touched my heart on both accounts. LOVE LOVE LOVE the room!!!! Purple is my favorite color but I don't do much decorating with it because it's one of those things that you can easily go overboard with so I tend to gravitate towards more muted tones. Not anymore! You've given me inspiration to add the color I love and now I know how much of it to use ;-)

  22. Image for Karen Karen

Your room looks so pretty and fresh. I have been tweaking things around my home to try and lift us out of the winter doldrums. I thought that the Radio Shack commercial was very good. And although the H&M ad was ok, seeing David Beckham running around in his undies was delightful!

  23. Image for Colleen P Colleen P

I was cheering for the Seahawks so it was a great day for me and I won $20 in the office football pool ;) I love the touches of purple in your room. I'm working on my craft room now and it is purple and gray. I fell in love with some Robert Allen fabric last fall and since purple is my favorit color so it was an easy decision! Have a great day!

  24. Image for Janie Janie

There was a lot of good commercials and some that made you think "What was that??!!" Love the room..love purple makes me want a purple room too....

  25. Image for Sharon Sharon

OOooo, the burlap smocked curtains looks great in the lvng room ~~ but do tell, what is now hanging in the dining room ??? Inquiring minds want to know ;-) .

  26. Image for Jill Jill

I love the touches of purple. The pillows are beautiful. I love bold so I could see the whole curtain in the pattern from behind the chairs! Our daughter picked a beautiful color for her kitchen in the townhouse she just sold. In some light it looked gray, but in other light the purple hue warmed the room. The Budweiser puppy touched my heart. I actually missed most of the commercials because I was making a King Cake (sans baby) for Fat Sunday, oops, I meant Super Bowl Sunday. I can't wait for next weeks double dose of Downton Abbey. So no spoilers please when you watch. :) Have a great week!

  27. Image for Jane Jane

I am not a football lover at al,l so I had hubby be sure to call me when Bruno Mars came on at half time. Was this not the best half time show in the history of half time shows??? Oh, I love him! You did a tremendous job with your living room. I love this shade of plum paint and your fabric is so pretty! I am always so amazed at your talent and energy. I am still stuck with my beige living room...just hopelessly lost. I just can't seem to get the courage to even dip my toes in the water. :( Happy New Week! XO, Jane

  28. Image for Lisa Campbell Lisa Campbell

Half time with Bruno Mars was my favorite part of the game. When my daughter left home I redecorated her bedroom. Black and white scrolled bedding, black damask curtains and purple walls ( also SW paint). The black and white pops off the purple so well. I made vinyl chandeliers about 12 inches big and did a repeat pattern like wallpaper behind the bed. Love that room!

  29. Image for julie julie

Love Exclusive Plum! Fell in deep, deep love with it when I saw it was the 2014 SW color. That's the new color of my powder bath! Fabulous room and I love the new purple pillow.

  30. Image for Abbey Abbey

Amazing work as usual Karianne! You have just the right balance in that room...purple can be tricky! (And so agree with you about Seinfeld. I'm a huge fan of the show and well, it SHOULD'VE been funnier!)

  31. Image for Barb Schneider Barb Schneider

Love it! Totally wonderful and so apripo (who knows how to spell that anyways...lol) because THISTLES are purple. I would say "its about time" but since we are such good friends I will say..........all in the right timing! Miss ya girl. Hoping all is "plum perfect" in the frozen tundra. Hugs and Smiles. Barb

  32. Image for Bonnie Bonnie

Beautiful room! I, too, fell for the puppy/Clydesdale commercial but then I've been sucker for those horses since I was a little girl. And the game? Only a disappointment if you're NOT a Seahawks fan. Then? It really was a bit of pins & needles as you kept praying Denver decided to continue staying away from the game because, after all, it's football and the opposing team doesn't really need a LOT of time to come back... And today you're just exhausted but still ridiculously giddy. It's a good day to be a 12. :)

  33. Image for Kristen Kristen

I didn't pay too much attention to the portion of the game we did watch and we switched over to Downton Abbey at 9:00. The one commercial I did see that I loved was the Dad saving his son from a bunch of near-death mishaps (and later a car does the same thing with automatic breaks) because I feel like I save my youngest girl all the time in a similar fashion. The puppy was of course the cutest commercial! By the way, "George" probably did have a bunch of makeup on because Jason Alexander has gotten hair plugs and is no longer bald, so they would have had to use makeup to make him look bald and match it to his face.

  34. Image for Kris Kris

Pretty! I love the mantel. Mine needs some major inspiration. My husband was so bored with the Superbowl that at 9:00 p.m. he turned on Downton Abbey and left the room to go to bed. It's a good episode, BTW.

  35. Image for Julia G. Julia G.

I really like the subtle purple of the room. You have given me courage to try to think outside my beige box! As for the commercials, puppies and horeses get me every time.

  36. Image for Garden, Home and Party Garden, Home and Party

Kari Ann, I'm not a huge fan of purple but I love what you've done with the room. I loved the lab puppy and Clydesdale commercial best...overall, a little underwhelmed by all of the commercials, except the lab puppy one and the parade for the returning veteran. I also wish they hadn't previewed the Superbowl commercials in advance...I felt it was a little anticlimactic to see them for the second or third time on Superbowl Sunday. Karen

  37. Image for Gee Gee

Beautiful touches of purple. I must confess, I am not a purple girl, but you made it luvly! I did watch Downton ...Not a football fan :/ Followed by Sherlock :)

  38. Image for Debbie @Dewdrop Gables Debbie @Dewdrop Gables

I love the purples! The room is so beautiful, you made it perfect! We don't get the Super Bowl commercials up here, so I spent a bunch of time on You Tube watching them. And of course, the Bud Clydesdale ones had me teary...they are always the best and this year the lab puppy one tops them all. Debbie :)

  39. Image for myforeverchanginghome myforeverchanginghome

I used to not like purple that much, but since I painted my walls a bluish gray color, purple (plum) looks amazing as an accent... who knew. I love the new look of the table and the mantlel. A fresh new look without a whole of change.

  40. Image for Tardevil Tardevil

You are not just a rockstar, but you are amazing. I mean, do you ever sleep? Love the gray wrought iron on the mantel and the shot of purple in the pillows. Not loving the color of the year accept for accents, though...but, at least it wasn't orange. And yep, John Stamos hasn't gotten any less hot, has he?

  41. Image for Gwen Gwen

Wouldn't you know?? My sis had a plum house--well accessories, couches, dishes, glasses, even a bathroom in a shade kind of like your table...oh about 13 years ago. So she is sooo done with the color of 2014!!! She's had that shade and all the way to plum all these years. A move to a smaller home in a coastal town and she's into a new color scheme!!! But I still see things like your pillows and a vase or something and get a tad lonesome for her just living down the road... Maybe I'll buy the new 2014 color in lipstick? And remember the happy times playing Scrabble, sipping water out of her --is it called Pantone 2014 --colored glasses? I'm a bit sad. It came back a bit too soon.

  42. Image for gloria wyssbrod gloria wyssbrod

I love the color purple to. Your curtain rods did you cut them to the size you wanted or can you buy them, could you tell me the length of yours? Always enjoy reading your blog daily one of my favorites.

  43. Image for Anne Anne

OMG....NO...................................this is my first comment..i just look at blogs everynight..but those gray and yellow curtains were to die for..my favorite in all blog land...sorry..but burlap instead of that beautiful fabric...i'm sad

  44. Image for Shirley@housepitalitydesigns Shirley@housepitalitydesigns

I love your new "Christie Brinkley" makeover….the pillow fabric is fantastic…so what came first, the fabric or the coffee table paint color?…What a great line up of Super Bowl commercials…My favs were the Budweiser commercials..both of them…they just tugged at your heart strings…and the funny one?…definitely Doritos for me!

  45. Image for Marcia Marcia

Would you please tell me where you got your sign that says "You make me happy when skies...." So glad I found you!!!
