This week I did something that I haven’t done in a very long time…

…I shopped at Target.

Living in the country, go-to-an-actual-Target shopping hasn’t really been a thing.

Mostly because there wasn’t a Target anywhere close to my gas station pizza stop.

Mostly because I had to cross state lines to get there.

Mostly because driving an hour to shop at the dollar spot isn’t really cost-effective.

But now?

I live in Targetville.

So this week found me standing in line at the self-checkout line buying party supplies.

And somewhere between scanning the polka-dot bags and the striped tissue paper…

…the most amazing thing happened.

I looked up and caught a glimpse of myself in the security camera.

Does your Target have those?

Maybe I’ve been under a Target rock and living in a Targetless gas station pizza world, but I never noticed them before.  But now when you are checking out in the self-checkout lane they have these security cameras above where you scan the items.

It kind of startled me at first.

I didn’t know the camera was there until I started scanning my first item, randomly glanced up and caught a glimpse of myself in the tiny monitor.

Maybe it was the lighting in the check-out lane.

Maybe it was the angle of the camera.

Maybe it was the joy of finding the perfect gift wrap selection.

But at the risk of stating the obvious…

….at that moment my hair looked amazing.

I immediately stopped my scanning to stare at my reflection in awe.

I turned this way and that way.

I flipped up a curl and twisted it around my finger and smiled at my reflection in pure joy.  I made duck lips and sucked in my cheekbones and pushed up the back of my hair with my hands and smoothed down the top of a curl and added a little side flip.

Forgotten was the scanning.

Forgotten was the entire reason for my shopping trip.

Forgotten were the polka dot bags and the striped wrapping paper and party supplies.

All of that was replaced with only two thoughts in my brain at that exact moment.

1. Where had this camera been all my life?

2. Could I take a selfie of myself in the security camera to post on social media?

I pried my vision away from my reflection for a moment to dig in my purse for my phone.

Mid-dig, I heard a discreet cough behind me.

Startled, I glanced up and looked around.

I couldn’t believe it.

Somewhere between my curling and smiling at my reflection and flipping my hair and turning this way and that in the camera….

….AN ENTIRE LINE OF PEOPLE WAS STANDING BEHIND ME WAITING TO CHECK OUT.

And the best part?

I could tell from their grins that they’d seen it all.

Every flip.

Every grin.

Every loving glance at myself in that camera.

Right then and there, my hair wilted.  My curls hung their head in shame.  My side part let out a sigh.  I bowed my head, finished my scanning, paid for my party supplies and ran out of the store.

Lesson learned.

Next time I shop at Target…

…I’ll have my phone out and ready. 🙂

PS  In decorating news, the pictures in this post (none of which have anything to do with Target or check out lines) are from my fall transitional mantel.

You can see all the mantel details here.

Lol, you are just beyond adorable! I can just see you there, grinning and curling, flipping your hair. I would have run up and given you a high five! Love you and your honest, funny stories! 😄 Cecilia

omg that is so funny. Yes, I do shop at Target but I never look at the camera. I would probably run and leave all my stuff behind....LOL very scarey!!! Now,,,if I saw a younger version of me. Maybe I would stay a while and check it out.

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy your blog! I've also spent some time reading your previous blog entries in an attempt to "catch up". You did the right thing in moving to Texas when family needed you. You are delightful!

Thanks for sharing your stories with us! Your blog always makes me smile. Oh and I love the new paint color for the house. It's beautiful.

According to my daughter, there is no better Target than the one at Washington DC. They actually have a escalator just for shopping carts. She was so excited that she took a selfie of her standing in front of the escalator full of carts! It's okay, Maybe they think your a tourist! :)

    1. Image for Maureen Maureen

Ahem....we have that cart escalator in Annapolis MD also. I forget that it may not be the norm but most of our local Targets are above the parking levels.

Thank you for my laugh of the day. You really need to get out more often, I try not to look at the screens or mirrors, as it would not be such a blessing. However, I applaud you for taking the time "to smell the flowers", and to appreciate yourself. I bet the people behind you wished they could find that spot in themselves.

You made me laugh so hard I ended up with coffee on my computer! I could so see that happening! And no have not observed those camaras before! Must be your Target! Thanks for starting my day off with a belly laugh :)

OMG your post was funny although I'm sure not to you at the time. Guess I didn't realized there were security cameras there but makes sense. Always love your posts and your mantel is gorgeous. Wish I had one to decorate.

You are so much fun!! I can visualize you looking at yourself in that camera. All I can say is that when I have seen myself in those cameras I look distorted and not pretty at all. I think it is great you took the time to enjoy yourself in the camera. AND, how funny you had people lined up behind you enjoying what you were doing. I am surprised some old grump did not complain. You made me laugh this morning. Thank you!

Golly gee wheez you are such a Hoot!!!! I chuckled throughout the entire post... 🙃. I think I will remember this as one of your cutest posts!!! 😃😄😂😘 By the way, I love Target! I can always find something to spend my pennies on... 😉

Love all of your posts but this was the best. I'm still giggling and yes I would have cleared my throat too but not for the reason you think. I would have been chocking to keep from laughing out loud. You are precious!

That's a great story! I was actually shopping in Target this morning, buying way too more than I ever need, spending much too much money on unnecessary items, but enjoying every minute of it. I guess that's the new curse of the American woman. Target has figured out a way to have us enjoy shopping at their stores way too much!!!!

Hi. I LOVE your mantel decoration. Please Please share your source:) And I am thrilled with your grey paint choice for your outside house and so glad that you chose to hold off on awnings for the front. I did awnings and I really regret it...it made my living room and dining room soooo dark. And it got west exposure!!! You will be happy to have the sunshine. Thanks for letting us pitch in our ideas. Lisa

LOL You are too funny, Little Miss Sunshine! And I miss the feeling that you are so close. Now you're far away and I'll never see you! :( But you are an amazing ray of exuberance...that reaches far and wide! :D

Oh my goodness... I do LOVE your down to earth honesty, your stories, the laughter and your Blog! Hope to meet you someday in Charlotte, NC

I so wish we had Target in England. I went to Florida last year& was getting in a taxi to go back to the hotel when I spotted a Target in the distance.. I said "see you later " to the driver. My suitcase ended up being overweight with all the goodies I bought. The lady on the checkout said to me that if Target came to the UK it would be a lot more expensive, which is true. We also had a long conversation about her favourite British TV programme "Doc Martin".Chatting away I failed to notice the long line of people queuing up behind me. I too held up traffic!

Holy Moooolllleeeyyyyy sister! You totally made me blurp-out in contained laughter - hahahahaha #targetismyspiritstore

To look at life---from any location!--with joy is why we all follow! Waiting for the next joyous moment that always brings us to reality with a huge amount of laughter! Happy scanning, my friend!!

  19. Image for Jolyn Jolyn

I live in Targetville, too! Isn't it just fabulous? I haven't self-checked though, mainly because when you need 2 carts to haul all of the goodies, it doesn't seem right. I'll make a special trip for a few small items, just so I can get some great lighting. I haven't had a good picture of myself in AGES!

  20. Image for Jere Jere

Hate to say this but....those tiny truth teller cameras have been known to lie on any given day! and while I'm here I feel compelled to say something about the new house front view ..have you considered (or thought about) removing the hedges? With the new paint addition and the thinking of awnings you may want more house to view and less hedge distraction. Just my opinion..at ninety one I've got a million of them--just ask my kids. Jere

And I thought you stopped traffic because of you the rock star had moved to that big city in Texas! Thanks for the smiles today!

Such a cute post, KariAnne! Just love all your stories! Your mantel is beautiful! Have a great day! Blessings!

Oh girl, you literally had me laughing out loud! At two different points in the story. If only I could have seen you in person. I just bet you looked amazing!

  24. Image for Patricia Nicholas Patricia Nicholas

Too funny, but instead of wilting, I would have totally told them it’s a rare occasion that I look this dang good on camera and I just HAVE to document it as proof, so it’ll be just another minute while I take a selfie of the security selfie. I mean seriously that’s like having a great drivers license picture! That NEVER happens.

😂So Very Glad I was NOT reading this at work while my students were working on papers 😜 You crack me up - Always!!!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO I am soooooooooooo glad I finished the last of my choooooooooooooooooocoooooooooooooooolate bar before I read this - wonderful laughs out loud and not a bit of chooooooooooooooocoooooooooooolate on my computer. :) :) :) Jean McGee

Soooo we went out west this past summer for a family vacation. We were in Nowheresville, Wyoming at a service station. My hubby did the driving which means if you miss a bathroom opportunity, you may not get another one until bedtime. Anyway, my daughter and I discovered that the women's bathrooms in this very rustic area (did I mention it was rustic and remote???) had fancy schmancy bidet toilets complete with heated seats and options for massage (in which you could adjust the water massage placement and "bubble speed"). I did NOT experience all the options but I HAD to take a picture (no, I didn't include myself in the photo!). And when I exited the stall ... yeah. QUITE a lineup was waiting. Sometimes ya gotta grab a photo op. The picture still makes me smile.

  28. Image for Brenda Pruitt Brenda Pruitt

Hm. I've never noticed those. I don't go into Target very often. Next time I'll look. Glad to see you've moved to TX, though I no longer live there. Tulsa is not that far away though, compared with where you used to live. Brenda

  29. Image for Marjorie Marjorie

I don't comment much but I wanted to tell you that reading your blog each day is something I look forward to!!!!!!!!! Is that too many exclamation points? Thanks for making my day.

You are adorable and make me smile every time I read your posts! Thank you! I need a lift sometimes and your sweet humor is just the medicine!

LOL! Well I have my own Target Scurity Cameria story.... I was out shopping at Target with my oldest daughter. (We LOVE Target) and saw a blouse I really really liked but didn't wanna go through the hassle of going to the dressing room...so I just pulled it down over my cloths..No problem right, except for when I went to slip it off !! Yep both tops pulled up! Showing my bra for all Secrity Viewers to see!! Of course it wasn't until after this that my daughter pointed to the camera overhead... I though it best to make Light of the situation and grinned my best full toothy grin and waved !!!

  32. Image for Brenda Brenda

Ah KariAnne, bless your heart! You graced me with a good laugh right when I needed a nudge to find the laughter in the little things. Being in that line would’ve been awesome!! 😊

  33. Image for Rebecca Turner Rebecca Turner

KariAnne, I had to swallow a laugh silently to keep from bursting aloud in guffaws, while Hubby is sleeping. (Snoring!) Do you know how hard that is? You keep us in stitches!

  34. Image for Liz Liz

That was funny! Just finished your book a couple of nights ago; I read it straight through, not even passing go! Loved it!

  35. Image for Michelle Michelle

Love the mantel! One of the best pictures I've ever had taken is my late-80s Texas driver's license picture. No kidding! Confession: I still have it LOL. I totally get that moment when you think to yourself, "Hey, that's not half bad!" Maybe Target will let you have the footage... Remember the 'Friends' NY blackout episode where Chandler looks at the camera after spending the blackout with a famous Victoria Secrets model and begs for them to give him a copy?

KariAnne, we never know where your posts will take us. We see a fall mantel and think fall... or maybe mantel. But never where you took us. This is why you are the real rock star and why we love you! You NEVER fail to amaze us!! <3

  39. Image for Sarah Sarah

You are such a hoot.....would love to see the reaction of the security staff watching your antics at the other end of the camera ;)

  40. Image for Trudy Trudy

Thanks so much for a great afternoon laugh!! Oh how I wish I could be more like that, to really be in the moment and do what I want to do vs. what's expected of me:), Good for you!

  41. Image for Kathy Kathy

I so wish we had a Target. I still live in GasStationPizzaTown.....which I dearly love but a Target would be so nice! I can so relate to the driving an hour to shop the dollar aisle. (Sometimes it is worth the drive!) P.S. I don't know Jere (comment above) but I love that she is 91, is reading your blog, and is commenting on it! P.S.S. Love your mantel!!!

  42. Image for Lisa Lisa

God love you! If I saw myself in the monitoring camera, I am sure I would be horrified. I often go out thinking I look pretty cute but when I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror or a window, I feel sad that I am definitely not looking as fine as I imagined. I think it's fabulous that you were admiring yourself. We should all have times when we feel good about ourselves, so you go girl! By the way, your mantel is camera ready as well.

This blog post was laugh-out-loud funny -- and I did laugh out loud reading it! I loved your house in Kentucky and I can't wait to see what you're going to do with your new-old house!
