Living Room Christmas

After the turkey and dressing and shopping and bringing the rest of the Christmas boxes down from the attic and unpacking my Christmas boundaries and reminding myself that I had a plan….

….this is where I spent the weekend.

And twenty seven cups of hot chocolate and 1400 steps on the step ladder and twenty one Christmas carols later the room looks like this.

The room and I rocked around the Christmas tree and asked Mary if she knew and listened to the birds raising their carols and shouted Joy to the World at the top of our lungs.

Christmas here we come.

pillow with Christmas tree

The first thing I added to the room were these Christmas pillows from our family handmade gift exchange several years back.

My sister tea stained these pom poms and glued them to burlap to make the tree.

I did a DIY on the pillow a while back.  You can see all the details here.

DIY Spindle Tree

Someone left an old broken down rocking chair on our back porch.

I know….right?

They knew that I’m the Statue of Liberty for junk in America welcoming my tired and hungry from across the land.

Here’s where rocking tree spindles ended up.

DIY on this project coming to the blog this week.

Christmas mantel

Here’s the mantel across the room.

It was so easy.  I just added five trees and then went all Elvis.

Thank you, thank you very much.

(tell me that made you laugh as much me)

bird ornament

These are just old Christmas tree toppers I’ve had for years.

I pulled it out and put it on a stack of dishes under a cloche.

I took the top of the cloche off for the picture because all you could see was Christmas lights from the tree and the camera and my messy bun in the glass.

Christmas Trees

Here’s my bead and pom pom garland from a few years ago combined with birch bark trees..

Then I added a simple driftwood nativity.

If you want to make your own pom pom beaded garland….here’s the DIY on how I made it.

metal present

For the center ottoman, I just added a basket and this present.

I found it at a yard sale.

It cost me less than a gas station cup of coffee.

Christmas in the family room

But my favorite Christmas decoration of all?

The one that made me smile and stole my heart and looked at Christmas lights and snuggled with me for the twenty-eighth cup of coffee when the room was done?

Our rescue Yorkie…..Bonzai.

my favorite Christmas decoration

He slept through the whole photo shoot.

The entire time I was taking pictures he slept on. In between Joy to the Worlds I could hear him snoring.

I think his favorite carol is Silent Night. 🙂

Love all your ideas...your blog posts are always so inspiring. Woke up today to a blast of snow here in Minnesota. It will help get me in the mood to decorate. I'm taking your advice on holiday boundaries. I cannot tell you how many friends have joined forces. I have shared that post with everyone I know. Why does it take someone else to help us process what we have been thinking for so long? So today my home will end up looking a bit different. My sons are now 22 and almost 26. I asked the youngest yesterday as he was leaving to go back to college would he be disappointed if the mantel didn't adorn his homemade tube sock snowman from elementary school. Yes...I love snowmen and have had the same setting on the mantel for years - the kids made tube sock snowmen in elementary and then in Scouts came home with puffy batting ones. I have a nice size mantel and always have been able to make them work - amongst the stocking hangers. Behind the sofa on a shelf would sit the holiday painted clay pots they made, a melamine plate that the youngest decorated (and he is a very good artist) and over on our desk a few more of their projects with so many memories of the days when they were excited to bring them home.'s tough evolving through the chapters of our life - at least I know it is for me. After reading your post I found myself thinking a lot about boundaries and how my mom did it all with six kids and keeping up. She would honor those homemade goodies that we brought home but they would silently be packed away and sometimes pop up years later on our mantel or tree. As we grew older she would pass along items sharing their stories with our children. Many times holiday cards we made our parents would show up in our own holiday mail. It's time to start decorating and stick with my plan.

Thanks Missy! We were not blessed with our family until later in life...I was almost 42 when my youngest was born. Time has just passed so quickly. I look forward to unpacking those special memories with grandchildren someday. Happy Holidays!

Karianne: Loved your post today. Unfortunately we had to put our baby girl Taffy to sleep 3 weeks ago... she gave us 12 years of tiny Yorkie joy. The house feels so empty and my heart has a hole in it as big as the Grand Canyon, but seeing a picture of Bonsai curled up and contented gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. Thank you.
