Have you ever spent a day smiling?

Just because.

Nothing extra-special happened.

No spectacular or over-the-top events.

You didn’t win the lottery or the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes or come in first place in the US Open….

….or land on the moon.

kitchen-remodel-ideas

But it was a brand new day.

And the sun was peeking through the clouds.

And it smelled like freshly cut grass.

And you found this amazing movie called, “The Ultimate Gift.”

And the mix was absolutely perfect on the diet coke.

kitchen-budget-remodel

And you were wearing red lipstick and your favorite pair of extra large turquoise earrings and your nose actually looked cute when you looked in the mirror and you were having a really good hair day and you were so totally thankful that you never acted on the rash impulsive idea to cut your hair with bangs.

*sigh*

And then….from somewhere deep within the very center of your heart….

….a smile bubbled up to the top.

craft-organizaton

It was almost like you couldn’t help it.

Your mouth smiled for you.

You smiled through Wal-Mart and Hobby Lobby and the gas station and the stop light and the drive-through.

You smiled at random people.

Just because.

People with pets and people in line buying oreos and people who just discovered burlap ribbon and people in the frozen food aisle and people who were frowning because the checker was really slow and people who looked a little sad….

….like they truly needed a smile.

craft-room-organization-ideas

And do you know what happens when you spend the day smiling?

It’s an amazing thing.

Really.

People actually smile back.

Truly.

And when they do….it’s incredible and wonderful and joyful and life-changing….

….almost like you walked on the moon. 🙂

the-gatehouse

In the middle of all that smiling I was busy working on the Gatehouse.

Wonder what’s been going on over there?

Well….we finished the kitchen and the craft room….

….and here’s a sneek peek of the front room.

My ex stepkids! Yep, I'm not with their father anymore, but the kids and I never stopped our love. We're very blessed with a wonderful relationship. Most of my smiles seem to always involve those three kiddos that weasled their way into my heart!

Life makes me smile!! Blooming flowers and chirping birds, little babies and doggies, pretty rocks and acts of kindness all make me smile!! My husband, kids and grandson make me have a "tooth showing" smile, though!! I love to smile!!

I am always smiling when I read your blog! I'm also the one smiling in the check out lane at random people, especially babies. :)

I am always smiling. I live with chronic pain everyday. So everyday I get up, do my hair, makeup, and dress with care and put a smile on my face. I then find something creative to do to feed my spirit and keep my smile real. Everyone is always surprised that I am always able to smile at them, but life is too short to waste in regret and sadness. Pain just makes the smile more important. :')

I'm happy when I can hear my kids working together on something, I'm happy when my husband drives up the driveway at the end of the day...I'm happy when the sun shines in my kitchen window just right, and it hits the glass plate I have hanging there and beautiful reflections dance on my counter top. And,I have a hot cup of yummy coffee to watch the dance with :)

I go around smiling like it's my job. Here's what happened: A few years ago we lost a very precious girl. It was 2.5 weeks until her 17th birthday, and she got into a terrible car accident. On a beautiful sunny day in the middle of a harsh winter. A day when the roads were clear and safe. She was like a third daughter to me. I planned on dancing at her wedding, sharing her babies, and her whole life. And she was just gone. It was extra hard for my youngest son, who had dated her for about a year. They seemed to be coming back together when it happened. That girl, our Victoria, was always smiling at everyone. And I knew how much we were all going to miss her smile. So every day I tell myself it's my job to put back some of the sweetness the world is missing without her. It's a big part of how I got through it... going around smiling at everyone. Because the ones close to me needed it, and the people out in the world? They probably needed it too.

this may sound weird but when i am out and about, young adults with handicaps make me smile. they are so kind and pure and ready to engage in conversation with you and boy do they smile back! they understand what is important...and being wonderfully happy about things like 9 weeks of independent living and standing in line with your mom getting your first bank account is what is truly important! and they bring a smile to everyone standing in line waiting their turn and suddenly even the grouch who is annoyed is smiling too. i just love them for their infectious joy.

A cute puppy, or kitten, or any baby animal doing what they do just because they can! Family memories are always sweet. And, as a Behavioral Health (psych) nurse, watching a patient finally "get it"....very rewarding. And then there's your blog....never fails to bring a smile to my face!

Your blog and your orange and grey cottage color scheme and red lipstick, they all make me smile! Oh, yes, and gas station pizza really makes me smile. I live in PA and have no idea of the whole concept and, one day, if possible perhaps you might be able to do a post on in ins and outs of GSP, complete with photos. That would make me grin from ear to ear. Where I live most folks do their best to stay out of gas stations. We like to pump the gas ourselves and zoom off to a pizza shop or restaurant for our pizzas. Not saying there is anything wrong with GSP, I'm just confused and can't find any real info online. I've tried!

Oh, I smile from the bottom of my toes when my precious family love on me...when the corners of my hubby's mouth curl in that sweet way and my 21 year old girl hugs me tight and my 18 year old boy kisses my forehead and my baby, who is 14 says, "I love you more than anything Momma, except for God"...oh yeah, I am smiling just thinking on it and blinking back the tears...have a blessed, blessed day! Thanks for all the encouragement you bring on your blog :)

Karianne! This should be easy for me because I smile all time. I even caught myself smiling while I was vacuuming the living room. I smile at people in the store and say hi ALL the time to strangers. I got this habit from my Dad, he would always make a comment about the weather to people we passed on the street. 'Beautiful day today!' I'm not sure what makes me smile, maybe all our wonderful blessings. Pass it on! xox

I smile when I see the momma ducks with their baby ducklings making sure they are all around her, when my daughter sings to herself or I catch her dancing to music when she thinks no one is watching, when my dog Sophie does the "Snoopy dance" when we are coming thru the door, when my husband whistles while he is showering or sneaks up behind me to nuzzle my neck, when my daughter describes her day to her friends on Facetimeand they are all giggling. I also smile every single time I read one of your posts...seriously. You are the first stop on my morning trek thru blogs. You never fail to make my day when I see you've posted new material. Thanks for asking this question. It made me realize anew how blessed I am and it truly is the little things that happen everyday that are the most important.

Some things that always make me smile: my cat rolling on her back like an otter; the smiles on the faces of the girls I babysit when I pick them up from school; when my husband comes home for work and the first thing he does is walk over to kiss me. Also, I love your pegboard wall! I have a pegboard over my drafting table that changed my life, I can only imagine how amazing a full wall of it would be!

I had to smile today when I was out walking. I went behind the strip mall because it was shady and there was this huge buff guy, with a mouth full of dip, carrying something heavy into the back of a shop. He looked at me, smiled and said, "You gettin' in a walk?" I replied a petite "Yes," and he said "That's good." And I kept walking. I have no idea why being encouraged about my walking by Buff Dip Man made my day, but it totally did. It makes me smile just thinking about it. I am always surprised at the positive impact strangers can have on me. So yeah for you for making all those smiled at people's lives better. And the Gatehouse looks A-Ma-Zing BTW. Good work lady. Smooches from the Other Marian

Lots of things make me smile - watching my first kiddo get excited telling me about high school, listening to my second kiddo gasp as she figures out I was a lot like her at 12, seeing my third kiddo working diligently on a craft project all by herself, having my fourth kiddo walk into my bedroom in the morning with his blankie and the need to have momma hold him. Those things are some of the best. The other is when my hubby greets me at the door with an ice cold adult beverage and a hug after a particularly long day.

My mother and my son make me smile. I celebrate my mother's life and the memories that she created for me. To remember her laughter as we chatted about various things from the weather to what things were going on in my life – especially the joys of new motherhood. Wishing that I could hear her voice once more, for only just a minute. We used to talk for hours on end about just anything and nothing. I remember her as she was – strong, brave, loving…special. She may be gone from this physical earth, but she lives within me every day, every moment, every second. My son reminds me of my mom, but so much of his personality is clearly me. He’s at the perfect age right now for exploring and for new adventures -- and I know my mother is watching from above and that makes my heart smile!

A lot of things make me smile but especially when my girls fight like siblings do and then one caves to the other and they hug and actually thank each other.... Makes me proud... They're only 19 months and turning 4 and already understand sharing, compromise and thnkfulness... Usually

What makes me smile is learning new things. I really like it when I spend time with my very young Great Nieces and Nephew, and I see the world through their eyes.

Gosh, so many things make me smile - my family makes me smile; funny You Tube videos - like the viral one from this week with the man waking from surgery to find out that the "eye candy" woman holding vigil by his side (and videoing him) was his wife (: the shock and awe that he was so lucky to have such a beautiful wife with perfect teeth; my crazy dog; people I work with; life in general brings a smile to my face.

Two things: 1) surprise visits from my 28 year old son who moved from our hometown in Oklahoma to Baltimore in early June. He has shown up twice as a total surprise and I miss that kid like crazy. While he's here - one constant smile on my face. 2) as a school principal, my fourth and fifth graders hugging me everyday and telling me how much they love school! Does my heart good!

Every day I smile at my four dogs. We call the three male dogs "The Lads" and our girl (Gracie Lou Freebush) is the "Lone Lass". They brighten our every day. Of course my husband is just as silly as I am, so we laugh together everyday. I have to also admit that I am blessed to work with a crew of the best nurses ever! It would be a rare shift for me not to laugh out loud! I thank my lucky stars for all of these things. Every. Day.

I smile when one of my boys cracks themselves (and us) up with a remark or made-up joke that is completely nonsense! :)

Thinking about my 90 year old mom who passed away in March. I miss her so, but thinking about her brings a smile because she was so content with her life, loved people, and always had a smile and good word for everyone. She was thankful for each day that the Lord gave her and kept going. I can still see her all bundled up in her coat and farmer's hat, mowing on her Dixon mower last fall!

Watching my dog play the hunter when we are on our walk in the neighborhood. She is on a leash and goes into stalk mode when she sees a squirrel in a yard we are passing. She knows which houses have dogs that usually bark when we pass and she pauses to make sure they see her. I smile and get such a kick out of her. Our animals are golden!

Spending time with my family, friends, and puppies makes me smile. I'm loving the hot pink pillow on the black and white chair. I've noticed that you use way more color in the outbuildings than you do in your main residence. Why is that?

My precious great granddaughter's face lighting up when she sees me and holds out her hands saying "JuJu". Now, that would make anybody smile! Thanks for the giveaway. Judy

Time with my family makes me smile...the laugh of a baby (It's one of my favorite sounds in the world). Puppies, enjoying simple pleasures, counting my blessings, and I'm not saying this to score brownie points, but your blog posts make me smile. They make me laugh sometimes too. I love your writing style and how you're able to take me on a little journey with you. Thank you for what you do!

Hi Karianne, your craft room turned out so nice...it is so very organized! I was wondering if you might tell me where you got the peg board jars from? I have a pegboard in my craft room and those would be handy. Sorry I have neglected visiting your blog in so long...I just have been very busy with my toddler at home and my shop. I'm not actually blogging at A Sort Of Fairytale anymore, but am doing a bit of blogging on my shop website, Cottage Industry (cottageindustryinteriorshop.com), if you ever want to stop by. I know you have been up to great things though over the past couple of years though, congratulations to you on the success of your ever growing, fabulous blog! Take Care, Stacey
