Just in case you were wondering if I’m ever bossy….

…I am.

Can you believe it?

I can’t help it.

You see…I’m a mom….in charge of a lot….four children, two dogs, three cats, salamanders, bunnies and two brand new kittens.

And a giant tortoise named Fred…..who made a wrong turn by the knock-out roses….and got stuck.

It’s a lot.

A whole lot of bossy.

I never really thought about all that bossiness before.

Until last week.

When I got an e-mail from a wonderful couple who live up the road from us.

My oldest son works in their yard and helps them around the house.

She told me he was helping them place flowers in front of their house.

She was standing in the yard giving him directions.

He placed the flowers one way.

And then another.

And then another.

He moved them to the left.

Then to the right.

Finally….at long last….everything was perfect.

All the flowers were exactly where they needed to be.

knock-out roses

Her husband stood to one side and quietly watched the flower moving proceedings from beginning to end.

And when it was finished….he spoke up.

“Son….you have the patience of a saint.”

My son laughed….then paused for a moment to wipe his brow.

Then he sighed and said with a smile, “Yes sir….I know….

…have you met my mom?” 🙂

PS  I’m working on converting from “bossy”…..to the much more politically correct….”because I said so.”

Sounds so much better to the flower-moving crowd. 🙂

Sometimes "bossy" works:) This made me smile this morning. Your son is fortunate in that he seems to have inherited your sense of humor. That will help him through some of those "bossy" moments that you have. Your home is beautiful!

Well, someone's got to be the boss, and being bossy is hard work. I tell my little people all the time, one day you'll get to boss your children. I know what they're thinking... I'll never make mine fo chores or homework... little do they know. Bossy Moms are the best Moms.

  4. Image for Beverly Beverly

Oh girl, you have me on the floor laughing with this one. You might want to consider referring to yourself as The Director. Now that sounds quite PC.

LOVED IT! How wonderful to know your persistence is paying off, especially where your children are concerned.....well, that's ONE way to look at it, anyway! LOL After the initial, "oh my goodness" reaction, it certainly must've been a proud moment for you to hear that....I mean, what a compliment that was to you! He sounds delightful.....just imagine how much his future wife will appreciate that attribute......Keep up the good work, Mom, there's only 3 more to go! Thanks for a great start to my day....it's always a good thing when we start the day off with laughter, don't you think?

Bossy sure gets a lot done, though, doesn't it? We just got back from family vacation with the grown kids and spouses and the kids still at home. I wanted to say to my older ones a bunch, "just because I said so!" Politically correct takes too long!

I just adore your blog! It is such a bright spot in my day!!! Soon after I married my sweet husband, Jim, I found this silk pillow that I thought captured his sentiments about me perfectly. It said "I'm not bossy. I just have the best ideas." It sat in the middle of the nest of pillows on our bed for years until we moved and redecorated and it no longer seemed to fit -- on our bed. Sadly, I'm sure it still fit me perfectly! Nine years later, I'm a very lucky lady to have a husband that still loves me in spite of it. Have a lovely day and thanks for sharing your life with us.

oh, and I wanted to tell you that I have used Ball brand Mason jars for at least 50 years now.....I learned to can from my grandmother and I've been doing it ever since! Love the blue ones...I had a collection of old ones until a storm took care of that. Nice of Ball to host this give away!

Really, a giant tortoise? I've got the kids, the garden, furry animals, etc, but you have me beat on the tortoise ownership! Now I have to check previous posts to see pictures of your reptile with legs. As for the boss thing... Embrace it, honey, embrace it.

Wonderful story! They say you can truly see how good a parent you are by how our children behave and react around OTHER people! I'd say you're doing an excellent job with your son!!! You go girl!!~~Angela

  12. Image for Jody Jody

What a hoot!!!! Love it!!! I don't have kids, but sometimes you just need to get things done. It just means you are a take charge kind of gal....nothing wrong with that. I so enjoy your blog!!!!! Your home is beautiful (inside and out)!!! Thank you for being so gracious and letting the rest of us into your "personal space". :) Jody

Bossy?...Oh, does that just mean you know what you want and won't settle for less??...Your son has a great sense of humor like the rest of your family and the flowers are beautiful.

  14. Image for Sally Sally

No he DIDN'T! LOL Too funny. Also... don't you love the things you find out about your kids via other adults??? My kids used to volunteer in the kids cafe at our church, working under the leadership of some friends of mine. When I used to tell my friends stories about our family, they'd respond by saying, "Oh, the kids already told us that. There's nothing we don't know!" Kind of makes you wanna go home and clean up your act, you know? LOL

  15. Image for Betsy Betsy

You're not bossy --- you simply speak with experience and authority !!! At least that's the story I tell my family!! As always your posts are the best ever !!!!! You have a blessed day my dear.

  16. Image for Patty Patty

I've also been accused of being bossy. But I like the saying I saw on a sign recently. "I'm not bossy. I just know what you should be doing." LOVE IT !

  17. Image for Denton Denton

This was one of the few and far-between moments when I actually had a good comeback. Stick around, I'll be here all week :D Denton (the oldest son)

  18. Image for Wendy Wendy

Loved this! There is definitely a difference in being bossy and getting things done (efficiently and correctly). I should know, my 9 year old asked her dad if he could be in charge of vacation because she "rejected my military precision scheduling." (yes she did!) He said, "Honey, mama may be pain sometimes, but if she left the planning up to me, we'd never get anywhere."

  19. Image for Peggy Peggy

OH honey that is too, too funny! Sounds like something one of my boys would say! Hope your weekend went well! I've missed you quite a bit recently... yes I took a much needed electronics sabbatical! It feels so good to be starting to get back into the groove and trying out new things!! :-)

  20. Image for Patricia Patricia

Ha Ha Ha ! I LOVE that story - Look at it this way - your son is in training to be a WONDERFUL husband !!!

  21. Image for Joy Joy

Bossy she may be, but she deserves medals, awards, ect, ect, ect for raising the best kid ever. And I know this because I am the bossy neighbor who bossed MISS BOSSY'S son around.

  22. Image for bethanie bethanie

Love Denton's comment on here... :) And bossy is good!! My husband says when he got married, his Grandpa told him you only have to remember this: "Yes, dear. Right away, dear. Whatever you say, dear." That learning that at a young age will benefit you thru your whole life!!

  23. Image for Betsy(@coastal-colors) Betsy(@coastal-colors)

You, bossy; never! You're a great parent and have raised wonderful children! What a cute story- it made me smile!

  24. Image for Regina Regina

You have a good son. :) Not only did HE receive a compliment, but he was obviously complimenting your ability to supervise, as well. ;)

  25. Image for Laura Laura

My daughters have started trying to boss me around now. My answer to that is "I am not that old. In another 25 years you can boss me around and take care of me, too." Ha, I love the getting even part :) Hugs, Laura

Well from one "Miss Bossy-Pants" to another, nothing would EVER get done now would it?? :) Just wanted to let you know that I am back online and will be a blogging fool this summer! Hope to "see ya around cyberspace!" ~Kim

Great story - thanks so much for posting. Your son sounds like a really wonderful young man. How many kids would do a perfect job, not many. You sound like a great mom, one that is loved by their children. Have a great week. Mary PS - Your farm is breath taking!

It's always so much fun to read your stories. I have an only child {son} so boys are my only frame of reference. Your experiences bring back such solidly fine memories... Thanks! PS: Your photos are the standard by which I judge my own efforts~

I use the phrase, "making executive Mommy decisions" vs. "bossy" almost daily...feel free to borrow this phrase anytime

  32. Image for Sandy Sandy

Love your son's response. Made me laugh out loud. My three young grandkids always let each other know grandma is the boss. When it comes to my ipad, three year old Aidan tells his two older siblings,"It's still my turn cause Grandma said so, and she's the boss."

  33. Image for Jan B. Jan B.

I'm new to this site and I love it. Like a breath of fresh air! Bossy? Think of it as Queen of quite a lot! And it's good to be Queen. And you've raised a Prince.

  34. Image for Tanya Tanya

Karianne you had me laughing before my first cup of coffee this morning (normally impossible) thank you for a sweet and funny story to start my day. I'm keeping it bossy here in WA state, I like to think of it as being "helpful" :) xo, Tanya

  35. Image for Claudia Claudia

Bossy sounds waaaay better than controlling! It is said that there is no difference between the two except that bossy is more like telling people to do things, but controlling is acually making them do it, I think??? :P

  36. Image for Cindy Cindy

I was just thinking about how bossy I was being today. You see, I have 2 dogs and I'm watching my daughter's 2 dogs. I took them all to a park and let them run off leash. All these odd bossy sounds were coming out of my mouth. I was just the automatic dog whisperer with clicks and heys and get over heres, keeping them rounded up to some degree. I guess it just comes out sometimes. But they listened and came and kept checking in with me. Bossy is an art!

  37. Image for Jo-Anne Jo-Anne

I am not a bossy person......................well not much..................I think we all can be bossy from time to time and that is a good thing

  38. Image for Kelly Kelly

My heartfelt thanks to you and your son. That couple would be my wonderful wonderful parents! It is so comforting to know they have such a nice young man to help them!

  39. Image for Elle Elle

I always fall back on the tried and true...."cause I'm the MO M...that's why". It works with every member of our family...even the cat!!!

  40. Image for Patty O Patty O

Another great LOL moment Karianne! I can so relate, or should I say "my children and husband can relate"! But what would they do without us, right? :) Have a GREAT day! Here's my epiphany moment and the reason I am thankfully imperfect: https://athankfullyimperfectwoman.com/2013/01/02/a-thankfully-imperfect-womans-epiphany-moment/ . I've also written a couple more lately that you might enjoy, take a peek if you get a moment: https://athankfullyimperfectwoman.com/2013/06/02/i-have-a-grandpuppy/ and... https://athankfullyimperfectwoman.com/2013/05/30/worst-sports-mom-ever/ amongst others... I seem to be on a roll lately...I always swore my life could be a comic strip! Thanks for the laugh tonight! You always make me smile! Have a GREAT day!

I loved your post! It made me think of myself. I emailed this post to all three of my children, still living at home! I knew they would get a laugh out of it too, and help them realize that I'm not the only "bossy" Mom around.

  45. Image for Pinky Pinky

Oh dear, I suffer from the same diease of BOSSINESS!!!!!!!!!! When my daughter bought her first house, all by herself, my hubby and I went over to help her paint. At her request. I started right in DIRECTING what we sould do. Finally my daughter said....."geez, you're bossy"!!!!!!!!!! I got it. It was HER house, HER decisions, HER paint. I needed to STEP BACK. Now, she is a grown woman, not a child but still........... I learned my lesson:):):) XO, Pinky
