Can I ask you a question?
When you open your closet doors and look inside your closet at the racks of clothes, do you ever think to yourself? I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR.
Sigh.
Am I the only one?
A closet full of clothes that don’t look like they go together.
There are cute shirts and cute pants and cute sweaters, but when all that cuteness gets together it’s like…well…it’s like it just isn’t that cute.
That’s why I started challenging myself.
Looking at things in new ways.
Trying to get as creative with my closet as my living room mantel.
It wasn’t easy—but over time—I taught myself a few things about putting outfits together.
So today I’m challenging myself. See that blue and white striped skirt? It’s so cute and on sale right now (you can see it here) and I wanted to create four outfits from things I already had in my closet.
And maybe? Just maybe….
….it might give you all a few outfit ideas, too. 🙂

Let’s start with a description of the skirt so you can tell what we are working with.
I have it in the blue, but it comes in all these colors, too (green, pink, yellow, blue and dark blue).
It is the prettiest fabric that feels like linen.
It has pockets and it’s lined (please note that the liner only goes about 1/2 down). You could always just remove the liner and add a slip if having it 1/2 way down bugs you.
The skirt is generous on the sizing, so I’d suggest sizing down if you are in between sizes.
Also—there’s a striped band and it has an elastic waist that doesn’t pinch at all.

1. Lunch outfit
Here’s the first way I styled the blue and white skirt.
I added this striped blue popover shirt with 3/4 length sleeves.
(total aside: I love the idea of the smaller stripes with the larger stripes in the same colorway).
You could front tuck in the shirt, but I love the look of the shirt tucked all the way in so you can see the striped waistband.
I kept the outfit casual with these neutral flip flops that I’ve had for several years that go with everything.
// blue and white striped skirt (10% off coupon) // blue sweater (similar) // pearl strands // pearl earrings (20% off coupon)// flower shoes //
2. Easter/wedding outfit
See how easy it is to fancy up the blue and white skirt?
Let’s GO.
I added a pale blue sweater similar to this one and made it even fancier with this strand of pearls.
And the fanciest part of the outfit?
These flower shoes that are such a spluge (I’ve had them for years and they never disappoint).
// blue and white striped skirt (10% off coupon) // white button with tie front (similar) // pearl earrings similar (20% off coupon)// crochet flower shoes //
3. Date night outfit
You probably already have a white button down in your closet.
Pull it out, pop the collar and cuffs and tie it at the waist of the skirt for a fun date night look.
You could also add a fun necklace or longer earrings.
I wanted to keep the shoes neutral, so I added these cute crochet flower shoes that I’ve shared with you all before.
// blue and white striped skirt (10% off coupon) // jean jacket (similar) // pearl earrings (20% off coupon)// white tennis shoes (similar) //
4. Running errands outfit
And if you want to keep it casual?
Add a white t-shirt and a jean jacket. I think it would look cute with a white sweater tossed over your shoulder, too.
White tennis shoes or simple flip flops are perfect for a day of running errands.
And the skirt is so comfortable and it’s so easy to look put together with an outfit like this.

So? Are you all about a little closet creativity?
Oh good.
Me, too—I loved getting a little creative and embracing the closet and using things that I already had in the closet to style the skirt.
And before we go—I wanted to share a fun dress (it comes in white jean, too) that I just got at Walmart. Everything always sells out so fast—so I wanted to share it now.
You can see the blue jean dress here.
The funniest thing about writing this post? My husband was so impressed. He kept saying—you found another outfit with that skirt? LOOOOL.
He’s a little in awe of me (and my closet). 🙂
PS I’m just curious—which style do you like best? I asked on Instagram and so far the one with the tied shirt is winning. 🙂

Such cute styling, but my favorite was the jeans dress. You look so youthful and cute in that dress. Wear it more often. ❤️
I love that everything you do is affordable for almost everyone and not out of reach for most!
Absolutely love this outfit...blue and white always looks so crisp and refreshing!
Already ordered! Love the white tee and jeans jacket, here in Colorado that’s considered dressed up with the plus of being a layered look just perfect for our highly changeable weather. Blue is my all time favorite color for, well, everything. You always have the best finds and ideas on how to use them. Thanks!
You always have such great ideas. Thank you for the inspiration to try new things
BRAV🤩 !! And Here’s another 💡💡💡 for your next book. Serengeti clothing company saves money by attaching an inlet fabric to a lt wt jacket. If you cut out that inlet & trace/cut any size “thrift store” top you can have multiple “interchangeable”designs! Question: how would you best attach the inlet to the cardigan? Velcro, snaps, doubled sided tape? BONUS: they also attach a part of a long necklace to change the look or attach it to the waist to close the jacket. IF YOU LIKE MY IDEA—can I get a signed copy of your next book??
I LOVE all these looks. You are the cutest!
KariAnne I had to laugh. My husband is so pulled together with his colors and I can if I try hard but I tend to buy as you said a blouse I like or something and have nothing to go with it. I have tried in the past year to start buying some basic colors so I can be more pulled together. My husband calls me flower because I am drawn to anything with flowers on it. I guess it's because I'm a Gemini! LOL So you reminded me to try to pull together outfits. You always look adorable by the way
You look great! The jean jacket style is exactly how I plan to board a plane from Boston to Florida in April!! Love, love!!! xxp
Great minds think alike!!!! It's so cozy! Best traveling outfit ever!
I love how you put outfits and accessories together. Gives me great ideas .......
You look so cute in all of these! If I were shorter . . . ha
Hahahaha! I get it! If I were taller---oh the outfits I could wear. :)
KariAnne - This might be my favorite fashion article you’ve written. I will use every idea with pieces in my closet this Spring. My foundation skirt is a tiered chambray. Each outfit suits you so well; and you look comfortable too. The vertical stripes and length of the skirt are perfect for you. Happy Spring!!!!
You have made my DAY! Do we need more posts like this? It was SO MUCH FUN to shop the closet and put it all together!!!!!
Could you get any cuter? No! Love this skirt, KA … my fav outfit is the sweater and layered pearls. So chic. I need this skirt stat. xo
That's my favorite, too! Happy day! KariAnne
You could not be cuter! I have a similar skirt in black and white checked and your post gave me some great ideas for styling it. Thanks!
Oh good!!!!! That was my hope! I just LOVE putting outfits together!!!! Happy day rock star! KariAnne
Blue is your color! Super cute and comfy! Win-win!
LOVE this idea. And I agree from comments above that the jean dress is SO flattering. In fact I went to the site and thought to myself "KA looks way better in that dress than the model." Swear to you this is truth. Have a happy weekend.
I thought EXACTLY the same thing. In fact, I went back twice to verify I had the right dress!! K is WAY CUTER in this dress!!
My favorite is the one layered with the white t and Jean jacket. All of the looks are so pretty it could be hard to pick and choose on a given day. Thanks for the ideas. Have a wonderful weekend.
All of the options are so cute, but I would have to pick the blue sweater with the pearls. That Jean dress is adorable on you!
I LOVE THE OUTFITS SO MUCH.
Hi KariAnne, Thanks for this post. I'm all the time looking for something "new" to wear. I like the skirt with blue sweater for a dressy outfit. But the white tee/denim jacket is my fave. I'm such casual person, it just sang out to me when I scrolled onto the pic. I don't have a blue'/white stripe skirt, but I have a pants outfit I bought at Target last Spring so I can definitely do these changes with the pants. Thanks again and Happy Spring.
Definitely NOT the white shirt. The other three all look good. The white -at least I in the photo - wash you out. Frustrating, I know. I have the same problem with white!
I love them all. My favorite is the one with the blue sweater. You are sooooooo creative, and your writing style is GREAT!
Love the blue sweater and the denim jacket, it suits you so well. x
I might be a day late to this party, but for some wonderful inspiration on building a wardrobe that never has the "I have nothing to wear" experience, I'd like to recommend TheVivienneFiles.com I have learned so much about selecting clothes from this site and the best part is, it doesn't advocate a hard and fast set of rules to follow. It really gives just direction and inspiration to build a functional wardrobe that works for you. If you haven't seen it yet, try it out. It seems right in line with this post.
