Looking for simple tips for fall dining room decorating? Here are some of my favorite fall ideas (and the cutest new rug.

Have you ever wondered what are the best questions to ask to get to know someone?

You know.

When you are at a party and you don’t know anyone and you are on your fourth glass of punch and you are looking around desperately for conversation.  But you’re not sure how to start one? You gulp and sigh and wish you had a question to ask?

I wanted a few questions, too. So I read this article from a website called Conversation Starter about the top 200 questions to ask to get to know someone.

Aren’t you curious about what they are?

Oh, good.

Me, too.

Here are five of the 200 (in no particular order).

1. What is your claim to fame?

2. Where would you rather be from?

3. What’s the best book or series that you’ve ever read?

4. What could you give a 40-minute talk on without any preparation?

and my personal favorite:

5. What do you hope never changes?

A decorative setup featuring a blue patterned vase with orange and yellow autumn branches, a small blue and white bowl filled with mini orange pumpkins, and a large yellow pumpkin placed on a table with a blue runner.

Do you think those questions would work?

How did they determine these would get people talking?

Did they telephone survey?

Did they take a poll online?

Did they ask 1000 inquiring minds?

Let’s test the theory. I’ll answer the five questions in this post and you answer one of the questions in the comments.

And then?

We’ll see if we get to know each other better.

A white sideboard holds decorative autumn items, including three small pumpkins, a white lamp with a gold base, and a bouquet of orange and red leaves in a vase. A partial view of a gold-framed mirror is visible on the dark wall behind the sideboard.

Okay.

Here goes.

1. What is your claim to fame?

I know that I write this blog and a few books and try to decorate my house for fall with pumpkins and artichokes.

But that’s not really my claim to fame.

Not even close.

Around here? My claim to fame is that I’m Whitney and Westleigh’s mom.

Sometimes I get stopped in the Walmart produce aisle by someone I don’t know and I get all excited because I think it’s a reader who’s read one of my books or the blog or follows me on social media.

Nope.

Sigh.

It’s just someone who knows the twins and asks me if I’m their mom.

And have I ever cooked spaghetti squash?

2. Where would you rather be from?

I wish I was from England.

Cornwall to be exact.

I wish I lived where Poldark lived and knew how to ride horses and climb cliffs and swim in the ocean out to rowboats and talk with the most amazing accent.

And I wish my hair would blow in the English wind.

A decorative pillow with intricate white embroidery on a blue background lies on a striped chair with vertical blue and white lines. In the background, there is a blurred view of a dark wall and a potted plant with vibrant red and orange leaves.

3. What’s the best book or series that you’ve ever read?

That’s a hard one.

I had to divide it up into fiction and non-fiction.

(total aside: if you were at the party and I led with that potentially long answer—would you tell me that you had to go get a carrot stick?)

Fiction (I had to put this one here because it reminds me SO MUCH of my father):  Texas by James Michener

I love this book because my father loved it and made the story come alive for me.

Non-fiction: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman

This book seriously changed my life. It helped me understand my mother and my husband and my kids and random people throughout my life.

4. What could you give a 40-minute talk on without any preparation?

Umm.

I have a few. 🙂

Blogging.

And more blogging.

And how to take pictures of dining rooms.

And how to shop the side of the road and find sticks and make them into this.

And how to apply red lipstick without a mirror.

A white dining table decorated with a blue and white vase holding branches with red and orange berries. A small orange pumpkin and a yellow gourd are placed next to a blue bowl filled with miniature orange pumpkins. The background features framed artwork.

A dining room with a white table and chairs. A striped chair with a decorative pillow is at the head of the table. The room features dark blue walls, large windows with patterned curtains, a chandelier, and vibrant fall foliage both in a vase and as a potted plant.

// medallion rug // blue and white pillow // blue and white curtains //

and last but definitely not least:

5. What do you hope never changes?

I hope I never lose the sense of wonder at all the little things.

Truly.

My grandmother lived until she was 94 and I can remember driving with her in the car as she would exclaim with joy over the smallest things that so many people might overlook. She’d talk about the clouds in the sky and the leaves turning color and the flowers that just started to bloom.

And so I try to be all about the little things, too.

Like the first day of crisp, cool fall weather.

Or the texture of a pumpkin against the antique wood of a rescued table.

Or the textured walls painted a brilliant navy.

Or the brilliant patterns and colors in a rug.

And the tiny polka dots on a button.

And the brilliance of a bird of paradise tucked into a flower arrangement.

And the world turning and changing and spinning from one incredible, glorious season to the next.

There’s so much wonder in every moment.

If you simply look.

// medallion rug // blue and white pillow // blue and white curtains //

I know I only said five “get to know you” questions.

But you might have one more.

Did I get a new rug for the dining room?

YES.

YES, I DID.

It’s one of the new rugs from my sweet friend Sara from Simply Southern Cottage’s new rug line. Isn’t it beautiful? I wish you could see it in real life. Seriously. It’s AMAZING. It has so much depth of color and pattern with blues and yellows and greens and creams and it’s so thick and plush.

You can see her entire line here.

And you can see the rug I have here.

And to celebrate the launch, there’s a coupon right now for an extra $23.37 off the price.

Here are a few more sources for the room:

A dining room with a white table and chairs, seen through open French doors. The table is adorned with autumn branches, and a chandelier hangs above. The room features blue patterned curtains and a rug, with natural light streaming in from a large window.

I love a good conversation and I love questions, too. I mean, I wonder why the earth is round and why kangaroos have pockets and where do all the extra socks go to and will there be another Downton Abbey sequel?

And now, I’d love to hear a little bit more about you.

Wait.

Hold on a second.

Let me get another cup of coffee, first.

Okay. Let’s go. 🙂

What do I hope never changes? My childlike search for fun. I love to have fun. I make my own if I have to. May that never change. I am now 67 and known for bringing the fun!

  2. Image for Joan McCormick Joan McCormick

How many stems do you have in the vase on your dining room table? I LOVE your decorating style ❣️

  3. Image for Niki Niki

Here are my answers: 1. My claim to fame is my baking. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to bake cookies, cakes, cupcakes. (Not yeast bread. Yeast weirds me out) 2. I’m from Cape Cod. I wouldn’t want to be from any other place! Not many people can say they are native to the Cape, let alone have 7 relatives on the Mayflower! 3. Best book I’ve read is The Women. Best series is the Mitford series from Jan Karon 4. 40 minute talk about my village or about baking 5. Never change the relationship with my kids

    1. Image for Pam Pam

Niki, I love the Mitford series too! I read that series a long time ago but that would still be my answer to this day as well! :) it’s about life in a simple, sweeter time and place.. a lovely place to be. 💗

  4. Image for Elizabeth Elizabeth

Where did you get the bittersweet on the dining room table and how many branches did you use? I love the rug!

  5. Image for Jan Jan

My question: Where would I rather be from? Still in Florida, but closer to the beach, where I could watch the waves roll in and out all day long. That's the most relaxing thing for me. I don't live too far from the Gulf of Mexico, but not close enough to see it or even go there everyday and when there's a hurricane here in Florida, I'm thankful I don't live that close.

  6. Image for Nancy Sharp Nancy Sharp

I can identify with this. My husband had many business trips that included wives. I am an introvert until I know a person. I grew up as Pastor Brown’s daughter. At school my brother was a star athlete so I was Mike Brown’s sister, then I became Ray Sharp’s wife at these business functions. Now at our church, one of my daughters is a soloist, so I’m Karen Davis’ mom. All those titles are fine with me. Oh! But the best is I’m Bryson’s and Gigi’s great grandmother!❤️

  7. Image for Connie Connie

My Claim to Fame is having Sunday Dinners for my family, and anyone that drops in, really, and I hope the importance of Sunday Dinners never changes. I could also talk about that for 40 minutes, or more :-) (sorry, I answered 3 questions!)

  8. Image for Mary Zuchowski Mary Zuchowski

I appreciate your blog! The decorating, the crafts you sense of humor! I coukd talk for 40 minutes about dogs and hiw smart they truly are. Cats too! Thank you for being such a wonderful person and bringing joy to so many!

  9. Image for Candy Candy

I’m from Nebraska but sometimes wish I lived in Colorado-only to be closer to mountain hiking and skiing. I could talk for 40 minutes on Cycling across states with your girlfriends! We plan to ride the KATY trail in Missouri in October. I’m 67 but hope to never lose my sense of adventure 🥰. I love your blog and writing style. Thank you for the smiles you bring every morning!

  10. Image for Karen B. Karen B.

I hope that as I age (I'm 74) I never lose my optimistic nature. I sometimes wonder how I got so lucky in life to have a wonderful husband 48 years before he passed. And two sons who are so kind and caring and who married lovely wives that gave me grandchildren. I have more to be thankful for than I can count. You always entertain me with your sense of humor and kindness. Great rug, great post. 😊💙💙Karen B.

I make wonderful Pastries. I always will try something new. I'm from Florida, Virginia but I've been happy in Maryland for over 40 years and 35 years in my home. Never want to be any where else. MaisIe Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear. Last one was published this year. I feel like I've lost a good friend. I love to talk so I could talk to you about gardening, quilting crafting or cooking. I hope my memory stays the same and my health. If you have your health you have everything!

  12. Image for Jodena Beale Jodena Beale

1)my claim to fame. I treat everyone I meet like I have known them. I don't know a stranger. Some strangers don't like this but it doesn't stop me when I meet the next person. 2) I am from Ohio and love it. Not because of anything special, it's just special to my heart. 3) Best book I ever read. I don't know if it is the best book ever but dang I enjoyed it. At the stroke of midnight by Tara Sivec. It was funny, Romantic and a little but naughty. This book was my personality to a tee. 4) I could talk 40 minutes about home decor and styling it. Don't get me started. Lol 5) I hope my sense of humor never changes. Making people laugh has been my life long achievement. I love to laugh, make others laugh. I think it keeps us feeling younger and the world just a better place. Your dining room looks beautiful.

  13. Image for Courtney Courtney

One of my favorite books is Boundaries by Townsend and Cloud. Thank you for all your wonderful decorating tips and tricks! You brighten our world!

  14. Image for Kris Kris

Love the orange in your dining room. Makes the blue even blue-er, if that makes sense. As for your questions .... I'm from Michigan and the only other place I've ever lived was Ohio. I really enjoy my proximity to the Great Lakes (I was close to Lake Erie when I lived in Ohio) and I think I would feel lost if I lived too far away from them. However, I tend to decorate like I live in an English cottage. If only we could bring all of our favorite elements of a location in one spot! As for a book, that's a really hard one. I would say that the most impactful book I've ever read was The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. Intense subject matter, but filled with hope.

  15. Image for Lorelei Lorelei

From San Francisco, would never change anything about that but I have had my hair blow in the English wind....it's fantastic!!

  16. Image for Judy Young Judy Young

Best fiction book I ever read (moved me the most) was Granny Dan by Danielle Steel. Best non-fiction book (my current favorite cause there have been lots of favorites) is In a French Kitchen by Susan Loomis. Pure pleasure reading that one! Total aside, I want to mention two books that I read recently …..Behind Closed Doors and The Breakdown, both by new novelist B. A. Paris!! I couldn’t put either of them down! I love how you wish you were from England! I’m from England (been here 52 years now). That’s probably my claim to fame, that and Zi love to bake. You are my favorite blogger, decorator and all around sweet person!

  17. Image for Teddee Grace Teddee Grace

I hope I never lose the ability to read. I'm 80 and still remember being in first grade, sitting in a tiny wooden chair with some other students in a circle around our teacher who was sitting in a large white wooden arm chair. We were reading a Dick and Jane reader, came to a very long word that started with "a" and Mrs. Hennigan asked if anyone knew what it was. She had been teaching us to read phonetically and I started sounding it out to myself under my breath when I suddenly realized I'd said "automobile." It truly was like the proverbial lightbulb going off. If I'd known the word "eureka" I would have shouted it out. Instead I shouted out "automobile" so loudly I startled not only Mrs. Hennigan and the reading circle, but probably every other student in the room. After that, it was "Katie bar the door." Nothing could stop me. Factual information and the ability to think critically are so important. What a treasure is the ability to read good words...including your buoyant and beautiful blog.

    1. Image for Michelle Michelle

I had a "Eureka" moment when reading at age 4! I remember so clearly how all of a sudden the squiggles in the book made sense! It was a school book that my mom had in the 1940's.

KariAnne I love your blog. You made me think this morning. You are an amzing blogger. I answered all your questions as best I couldWow I have to think. I am not always sure who I am! Claim to Fame I’m have a good sense of humor and I adore my family. I am happy to be mother and just live every day to its best I have done many things in my life. I worked for Yukon Koyukuk School District in Alaska where I did a sled dog race and watched the Eskimo Olympics, I lived in Alaska for 25 years. I worked as a security officer in Kazakhstan guarding our space technology. Who knew? My kids might say I know how to find the perfect gift for someone. I love to quilt. I can’t seem to find a real claim to fame. Like you KariAnne I take advantage of opportunities when they come along! Where would I like to be from? I think I am drawn to Ireland as my would be home I love the accents, the red-haired lassies, the hills and greenery. Books As far as books it depends on what I’m reading now. Now I am into the Poison Study series. I loved the Harry Potter Series and the Outlander series. I tend to like fantasy I suppose or the unusual. No thank you on horror! But I love a good biography. Something I could speak about for 40 minutes. I know I could talk for 40 minutes about romance. Not just man and woman but people. The romance of making life romantic. Whether it is decorating, doing for others in a romantic way, spending time with people. There are so many ways to be romantic. I think setting a table with beautiful things or holiday celebrations is romantic. I did a talk in one of my clubs in Feb about romance. I assigned them homework to do something romantic that week. Well, to my surprise one of the ladies who owned a nursery came over and made a flower bed by my front door! It was wonderful! Life is amazing. What do I hope never changes My hope of never changing is the closeness of my immediate family. The love they show each other. The love of my husband of 54 years. He still holds my hand and opens my door. I remember going to a movie and a young teen saying she hoped to find someone who would open her door. Once in Lowes we were talking and shopping and a stranger came up and said how “cute” we are. At a convention a speaker came to us and said we gave her hope that there are still people who can love. So, I have something special I don’t want to ever take for granted or lose.

  19. Image for Diana Diana

I like your grandmother always appreciate nature and how good it works together. The various colors and texture's just work together. It is amazing if you think about it. So when I go outside or drive down the road I observe and I am thankful for all of it.

    (1) My infamous Cinco de Mayo party - it was huge, I had it annually for over 30 years and five couples met their spouses there. My personal email (and nickname) is CincoSuzie - since the beginning of the Internet. (2) I always wanted to live in Europe. Anywhere. It’s a virtual shopping mall of culture. (3) Shogun. The book is soooo much better than the movie. (4) Almost anything. I never shut up. 😎. (5) My family. I hope everyone stays happy and healthy. I think I share every mother’s deepest fear, though. No surprise there.

  21. Image for Cindy Vojanec Cindy Vojanec

Like you, I have learned to love the simple little things and appreciate them. I can be on my backyard swing and see the sky on a particular and day and thank God out loud for it. Life can be such a struggle sometimes and enjoying the little things are sometimes the only things you find pleasure in. Never stop being you, Karianne!

  22. Image for T J T J

My favorite season is fall - the smells, the decor, the freshness of the air, the falling leaves - I hope it never changes! And I wish, just sometimes, that I was born in England too!

  23. Image for Victoria Victoria

I hope it never changes that I can see or appreciate little things, or everyday things, not just big things. I'll stop to pick an ewwwy worm off rhe sidewalk and carry it to a patch of grass. The feel of my dog's cool wet nose against mine. Seeing old homes and each little piece that makes it what it is. A horse that nuzzles to get affection, or when they know you need it yourself. The look on the faces of hotel housekeeping staff or waiters and waitresses, telling them you appreciate the great job they're doing. Seeing military, law enforcement, fire fighters around town or in rhe fast food line, and saying thanks, maybe offer to get their beverage or sandwiich. Or boxes of treats for the holidays. The feel of a warm fire and the smell of the wood. Seeing a child discover they love books and travel and foamy root beer mugs and melting ice cream cones and the smell of Thanksgiving dinners. KariAnne, a thanks to you for sharing your talents of writing, crafts, inspirations, and spreading joy. You are a happy person. I tell people to sign up for your blog if they want more happy moments in their week.

  24. Image for Nancy Tillery Nancy Tillery

First, I love all the special, little things you notice, and share, and that your grandmother appreciated. Sunsets, twigs, wood, florals, fabrics, how to’s. The joy of nature, lovely home, family, food. I inherited this interest via our mother. She created, loved, entertained, shared, hosted, a sense of humor, so much of herself with us, two daughters. A stay at home gardener in summer, freeze, can, bake, created and worked in beautiful yard, whiz in the kitchen, delicious everything made from scratch meals. When young, she designed and sewed all of our school clothes. A legend in our lives, she lost her husband, our father, when we were young, she put on her Super Woman Cape and never stopped helping and supporting us, living to age 98. Unfortunately the last years of her life were Alzheimers, blindness. You know what, we helped her through this stage, as she inspired us with her life. This wasn’t the share I intended. Books, I loved The Mitford Series, Jan Karon.

  25. Image for MARY ANN COOMBE MARY ANN COOMBE

Kari Ann.....love the questions (and answers)! Oh, and your blog is my FAVE! I was born and raised in Paris (IL). I guess if I could have been from anywhere I would make it Paris, FRANCE. I could talk on traveling, cooking, friendships and fun! My favorite book series is probably the Vince Flynn series. But, I like ALL kinds of books. Lately I have loved Incredibly Bright Creatures, The Lonely Hearts Book Club, West with Giraffes...I could go on and on. What do I hope never changes (great question)? I hope my ZEST for life and curiosity never change...and I hope that I still have the energy to explore new places, new people and new things! Thanks, Kari Ann, for always being so uplifting!

  26. Image for DeMarie Ingraham DeMarie Ingraham

How fun. Very thought provoking questions. #4 - I can give, at the very least, a 40 min talk on Native American artifacts. I do hope that I never change waking up each morning and having gratitude for all that the Creator has bestowed on me. Especially nature in all its forms…flowers, sunrises and sunsets, falling leaves, the smell after a rain, puppy kisses and kitty purrs, honey bees. And, of course, family and dear friends along with my curiosity about life, in general, because I will never be bored or boring. Thank you KariAnne, for sharing your amazing life with us.

  27. Image for Susan Sikes Susan Sikes

I love this post and all of the comments! I am from Texas and cannot imagine living anywhere else. I would like to get rid of a little of the heat though! I think I could talk on school counseling/preparing for college for a while, but since I just retired, I am trying to expand my area of knowledge.😂 We will see where all that leads!

I like the question, where would you like to be from?? I was thinking US locations and then you come up with England. Well, that opens a whole nother area to consider!! My first thought was New England. You can relate to that. I've only been a couple of times and for very short periods but..... It's so beautiful, no matter the season. I'd love to live there for a year or two, in retirement, and see it at a more leisurely pace. I've been reading a series, Chef inspector Gamache, by Louise Penny. I'm ready to start the last book in the series and I'm procrastinating. I don't want it to end. I've become attached to the characters and don't want to stop hearing about them. I really appreciate these suggestions for conversation starters. Jan

  36. Image for Sandy S Sandy S

My claim to fame is simply being "Grammie" Everyone calls me that, adults and children alike (the children are all teenagers). I love all of James Michner's books! Also Stephen King, John Steinbeck, Elin Hildenbrand, David Baldacci, Clive Cussler, Maeve Binchey, Anne Rivers Siddons. Now that I'm retired I have the time to read them all. I'm from Los Angeles, but lived for a few years in South Carolina and loved it but can't take the humidity. I've loved visiting New England also, but can't take the cold winters. I guess I'll stick with So Cal!

  37. Image for Laura Buckley Laura Buckley

I hope I never lose my curiosity! I love researching different subjects that randomly come up. And I find people so interesting. Love to understand what makes them tick or just converse and ask questions to extend kindness.

  38. Image for Michele M. Michele M.

I could - and have - give a talk on how to host a proper Afternoon Tea (etiquette, recipes, ALL things china and proper brewing and serving.) I have hosted dozens and dozens of tea times. I am very encouraging about it and how to start slow and easy with your first one. ♥ Hosting a tea is my best love language. Another thing I could do is teach cooking lessons on how to create something from nothing - or REALLY great somethings from good things. Again, feeding people and entertaining is my thang. I loved your answers, KA. And I like your new rug. And I love that you are famous for being those adorable cheer twins mom. One look at you and anyone could tell you are related.

  39. Image for Sue P. Sue P.

I could talk for 40 minutes about the wonderful treasures in the Library of Congress. I was a librarian and docent there for 6 years. Our docent training introduced us to so many unique treasures from the collection and taught us about all the construction and decoration of the Jefferson building itself. I could never relay it all during the 30 minute library tours or in talks I've given about it since my retirement. It's truly a place not to be missed on any trip to Washington, D.C.

  40. Image for Dianne Miley Dianne Miley

Where would I rather be from? Coastal South Carolina. I love Charleston, but anywhere on the SC coast is amazing. Lived there 11 years (as a transplant) and loved it.

  41. Image for Loryl Fisher Loryl Fisher

My claim to fame is that I was a preschool teacher/director for 25 years and all those children I taught are my legacy. I could talk about teaching, my son or family stories for 40 minutes. I don’t want to live anywhere else. I love the Midwest and the change of seasons. And picking a favorite book is like choosing a favorite child. I always love the one I just finished.
