Random thoughts on a first-day-of-school week Saturday:

1. Have you noticed that if you say something out loud it appears in ads?

Yikes.

The other day I was talking about going to a store and IT SHOWED UP IN MY ADS ONLINE.

2. I published What I Bought Wednesday on Facebook this week. You can see it here (with the BEST lightbulbs ever).

You can see it here.

3. The twins are going back to college this week. They are packing their bags and their computers and a few loads of thrift store furniture and they are heading to Waco.

I am going to miss them so much.

4. Just in case you ever thought about moving to Texas? It was 108 degrees in places in Texas.

Sigh.

Fall. I’m looking at you.

5. It was an amazing week on the blog. I shared with you:

6. I ordered the perfect mesh tennis shoes for fall. They come in so many different colors and they are SO comfortable and they are so inexpensive. I already had one pair, but I’m ordering another pair in the apricot. Just a quick tip—if you order them be sure and size down if you are in between sizes. They run a little big.

And now?

Let’s see all the amazingness that I found for us this week.

What do you think of gray walls?

Are you in or are you out?

If you like gray or you purchase a house with walls that are painted gray here’s how to make them work.

Look at these DIY planter boxes.

Aren’t they the cutest?

You can see the DIY here.

How to make a topiary with live boxwood cuttings.

Isn’t this the cutest idea for summer-almost fall?

You can see the DIY here.

I think ginger jars are the new dough bowls.

Here are some of the cutest ginger jars.

And how to decorate with them.

And in random news:

And one more for the road

Did you know spray paint can change your life?

Here are nine things to spray paint you may not have thought of.

And if you have a child heading off to college?

Here are my tried and true dorm essentials.

You can see them all here and you will wonder how you lived without them:

  1. this cozy blanket
  2. this power strip extension cord
  3. this door jam stopper
  4. this double-sided tape
  5. this hanging closet organizer
  6. this car clothes hanger bar
  7. this bedside shelf caddy
  8. this suction cup organizer
  9. these large storage bags
  10. this mattress topper (40% off right now)
  11. this over-the-door hook
  12. this hanging closet organizer

Happy random Saturday to you

Our youngest has been in Dalllas all summer for internship. He said playing tennis at Samuel Park was like playing with a soaking wet towel ( his shirt). We are headed to Cape Cod after college drop off! Good luck with move in week! Laura

My last two houses I’ve had the interior walls painted a pale gray. Love them! No problem decorating with them. So much better than boring beige!!

Never a fan of gray. My mother taught my sisters and I a few basic rules. Because we have light complexions and mousy brown hair, we were taught to wear color and pattern near your face but stick with basics for your lower half. Bright colors good, moody colors no so much. And never horizontal stripes. This edict has bleed through to our interior designs. (Although a striped chair has a certain appeal. Lol.) While none of our homes are in the Lillie Pulitzer range, we do have our colorful accent pieces with an underlying basic color. But not a lick of gray between 4 houses.

I remember those back to college moves! So tiring and my heart always felt so heavy! Thank you for all the pillow shares the other day and for all this inspiration!

Hello Gray is just not my cup of tea. We love color here. Sweltering heat in Az. I am always hot , seven months of the year. Read a great book recently. The keeper of happy endings, Barbara Davis. Its really wonderful. Takes you right in. For those who need a good distraction this time of year. Loved the Michigan Cottage!

The link to the ginger jar decorating ideas takes me to a post about Chocolate Zucchini Muffins. Is anyone else having this problem?

Wow! So different from the mood last year when the twins set off for their first year at university! Sounds as if they have everything in hand. It certainly would be fun to see their college abodes! I wanted to tell you what a lovely photograph that was of you and your husband that you posted...was that just this past week or the week before? Time races by. At any rate, I think you should have it blown up, framed and placed over a fireplace.

The Maine sea captain's place, oh, my. The views are amazing, but at $850 a night, it is totally out of my range of comfort. Beautiful and the oars for stair railings and all the books, so charming.

Oh, my! I discovered those shoes last Fall when a customer at one of my seasonal shows had them on when shopping! I now have several pair and really love them, too! I recommend them to everyone around me when I wear them! Ordered my hubby some, and he’s always in his, as well! I know you will miss the twins *again* … I remember those August days well. I would also love to see pics of their rooms (or apartment?) because I’m sure you have helped design their “nests” with both organization and decor in mind! I’m sweltering here in North TX, too, KariAnne, and anxious for Fall weather to actually arrive!

Karianne, please ignore my previous comment . I found the tennis shoe link. When I clicked over to the post, I skipped the info which I had read on the previous page and, therefore, overlooked the link. Sorry for the confusion. .

What a great post! Loved the planter and looking at all her ideas for the shed. Can’t wait to make the Chocolate Zucchini Muffins, look so yummy. Than you for the coffee grid uses. Definitely using the flannel shirt banner idea. I have a shirt with Christmas colors. Maybe a star pattern? So relaxing and inspiring! Now take some time for yourself and have a great week!

When we moved into our current home three years ago, the walls in all the rooms were (recently painted) light gray. Everyone called them white, but I saw gray. Sad, dingy, not white. This past winter (one room every weekend) I painted every room a creamy white with white trim. I feel like I can breathe again (though honestly, most people wouldn't even notice!). Love seeing Thistlewood in my mailbox on Saturdays Karianne! Thanks for all the inspiration!
