This is an I-didn’t-have-a-lot-of-space-in-the-gatehouse-and-I-wanted-to-find-something-that-would-make-it-work-and-live-large-and-wait-until-you-see-what-I-discovered kind of post.
A just because post.
An I’m so excited I have to write it kind of post.
The kind of post where we have coffee and breakfast and tell each other how amazing our furniture is.
Oh good….you too?
I’ll go first. 🙂
When I first started planning furniture placement at the gatehouse, I had this wall I didn’t know what to do with.
It’s between two doors and it’s about 48″ long and it serves as almost a pass through space between the bathroom on the left and the craft room on the right.
Whatever furniture I placed there couldn’t really extend into the room too much or it would get in the way when you walked between the two spaces.
Really narrow because I only had about a foot to work with.
Trying to find a table that narrow is really difficult.
And then I discovered this piece at IKEA.
It’s like the superman of tables.
It’s only 10 1/4″ deep.
Almost like it’s not there.
And as wonderful as all that narrowness is, it’s not even the best part.
Most of the time the table sits there with its 10 1/4″ and looks amazing.
And then? Â It totally goes all superman with these gate legs on each side and extends out to….wait for it….wait for it.…59 7/8″ of craft space or card playing space or artwork space or sewing space.
I know….right?
I’m speechless, too.
And if that’s not Superman enough, it has three drawers on each side.
You almost don’t notice the drawers at first because they blend into the table.
They are about 14″ deep and perfect for cards or sewing supplies or craft supplies.
And when you are done sewing or crafting or creating or just being generally wonderful, simply fold the legs down and the table goes all Clark Kent and quietly, unassumingly takes its place against the wall until the next moment of glory.
If you have a small space or a pass through that is narrow, this is the table for you.
See why I had to have coffee and tell you all about it?
When your table is leaping buildings in a single bound, you simply have to discuss. 🙂
PS  I’d love to hear about your amazing furniture, too. 🙂
PPS Â In super exciting news….the fabric is now on Houzz!!!!!!! Â I’m so excited and honored and full of joy! Â You can see the collection here.
Oh this is too funny!! Right now on Craig's List I have a Craft/Quilting table that is a skeleton of yours. Mine is on rollers and I used it for cutting fabric and putting together window treatments. Well, our house is itsy and I don't have room for it. Yours is attractive and can be left out. Mine has no storage and metal legs :-( I'd keep something like yours but this table was stuffed in a closet with more things stuffed on it and around it. I'm on a purge mode. Something has to be done about the overflow. I love your craft/all purpose table. I'm going to have to check out IKEA for items I've been looking for. Have a great day and I love your table!!
I love this table! Superwoman...crisis averted! You have solved another craft crime for this house! Now to schedule an IKEA run. Happy Friday!
Oh, my gosh! Kerianne! How did you know I was looking for a table....just like this? I'm looking at the big hole in my sunroom at this very minute. It's Calling to me ...every day ....To make it a useful space. Thanks so much. I'm off to IKEA. I'll let you know how well it takes paint. XOXO Susie from The Chelsea Project
Great table! I have never purchased anything from IKEA and we have a great one out by the Mall of America in Minnesota! My son is moving to grad school the end of June. Trying to think of things to suggest that would be easy for future moves and yet functional. Looks like I need to schedule a visit to IKEA.
I love your Kind of person. You have wonderful humor !
That table looks great! Since I don't have a large house, I love small pieces of furniture which gives you lots of function. And it's pretty, too!
Hi KariAnne, I too, have been "obsessed" with looking for a new table/cabinet/dresser/chest for my sewing room. I have one of those cutting tables, with the white laminate top and the black metal legs that go all diagonal and such, but have decided there is just too much wasted space underneath it and I'd like to have something with drawers...but I'd like something pretty and maybe an antique chest or a dresser with LOTS of drawers. I've been seriously obsessed with looking for something and want it NOW!! I did find a wonderful craft/storage table called a Martha Stewart Flat File Cabinet and it looks beautiful...but the reviews said it was a nightmare to put together and the drawer bottoms were a bit flimsy...so I passed for now, but I still keep looking at it. I'm hoping to find something soon... Maybe I'll find something in Paducah next week... when I come see you at Hancock's. There are LOTS of antique stores in Paducah...although the quilt shops take over the spaces downtown, so there might be more fabrics to see than dressers! Blessings, Jeanne
A superman table for a Kentucky superwoman gal!! Love, love!! : )
I love that little table, it's a total space saving work horse! Congrats on having your fabric on Houzz! I love that site...I could spend hours on there...okay I have spent hours on there! Happy Friday!
Narrow pieces of furniture that also have function are so hard to find! This is a very cool idea. :)
Oh, Karianne! I have to tell you (as I'm making my 2nd cup of coffee) ( hard work, that Keurig, currently brewing Gevalia Mocha Latte has a little fizzy packet to make the foam, who knew?) Do I use too many parenthesis? I digress-- I just wanted to tell you that your blog is my favorite pick-me-up, besides coffee of course, and I sooo look forward each day to reading it! I love your practical advice, your sense of humor and I really wish we lived around the corner from each other! I Love to bake. Sweets. All things that probably have too much fat or sugar, but who cares? Life is for living and enjoying. I even think there is probably a reference to that in the bible.
Kari, I love it when you get excited over finding a "perfect" item for your space and tell us all about it over coffee! Last week I got so excited over a perfect giant feather wreath. How could I not know that I needed a giant feather wreath, and how did I live all these years without a giant feather wreath? By the way, for those readers you have who are "handy", your IKEA table really reminds me of this DIY table from Ana White https://www.ana-white.com/2010/10/plans/sewing-table-small-spaces
I'm going to IKEA!!
I've seen this table at IKEA before, but never really thought about how handy it could be in a small room! Congratulations on having the fabric line on Houzz!
Congrats on Houzzing your fabrics! Your table is super practical. Now, my turn. *stirs coffee* Soo, I was looking for living room side tables. And I can't/don't want to spend what real pretty sidetables cost and they should be light and airy and yadda, yadda. So, I brought the outside inside and bought me 2 garden tables. Then I bought another one. And then - for good measure, - I bought two more. And I love them. :)
I am so happy for you and the fabric on Houzz!! I may have already ordered some!!
My tables are so lame...they just sit there. Yours are so talented...they can do more than one thing at a time! ;)
That is perfect... AND adorable! Tania
So happy your fabric is on Houzz! Love the table but have no idea where to begin looking in Ikea for it. Any info on it would be appreciated. Have a wonderful weekend!
KariAnne, I'd love that table for my dining room/"studio/artsy stash!" But I have so much in there already, there's no space left ~ especially if I wanted to open and use it! What a great piece, tho' ... both space-saving and functional. I know! I could have one of your "I'll completely change rooms of furniture" moving days (haha)! But first I have to erase the distant memory of almost going to drive-in-divorce court (just kidding!) over hubby helping me assemble an "easy to assemble" desk ... What a day THAT was! How do you always find just the right piece ~ and make us want to buy out the entire inventory? And best of all, congrats on the Houzz news: that's just "Wow!" Smiles, kj
I have a table like this that I received from a friend before she moved to Guam. It is an antique that she refinished-beautiful wood-not sure what kind but I do know it's not oak. 2 drawers with wooden handles and a larger door on bottom and opens on both sides to form a large table just like yours. It is amazingly heavy! I have it sitting in the guest bedroom as a side table and its never gotten much use from me. I feel guilty for not putting it to use after reading how others would love to have a table like yours!
I can't tell you how many times I've considered buying that table. Matter of fact, it might be just perfect for the space I hope to turn into a 'folding office' someday. Let's just hope it doesn't get discontinued before then....
I just got my first coffee table (after 39 years of marriage--I don't know, why, we just didn't see to have one???) It has drawers, and hiding places and two tabletops but wait for it--it rises!!! I can work right in front of the t.v. at my level and push it down to regular height. I have an office but love to work in front of the t.v. for some things-- so now I have it all!!! L-O-V-E-L-Y!!!
I love reading your posts! I always leave your page smiling and happier than when I arrived...thank you for being you and sharing with all of us :)
Great table - I have seen it at IKEA and always liked it. I'm interested in what that intriguing object on top of it is.
It's a nice versatile table to use for entertaining too!
Will you send out the link for your fabrics on Houzz? I'd like to see them. Houzz contacted me and I'll be on their site as well. Love their site. Now I've got to make a big 'ol trip to Ikea, don't have one anywhere close by, but love this table :)
Such a perfect piece and a lovely space, as always!
I saw this post the other day and a huge light bulb went on in my head. CRAFTING TABLE!!! Had my son pick the table up at the IKEA near his home and he and my son-in-law assembled it for me. Thanks so much for the tip.
