best blue gray paint colors

Did you know that not all blues are created equal?

If you look at the color wheel, there are so many different blue options.

There are blues with a green undertone.

And blues with a purple undertone.

And blues with a hint of turquoise.

And my personal favorite…

….blues sprinkled with a hint of gray.

Have you seen them?

They are some of the prettiest blues on the planet.

Truly.

If you are like me and you are finishing up a few projects around the house right now, this is the post for you.

Here are some of my favorite friends…

….the best blue gray paint colors for any space.

A couple of quick things about blue gray paint colors before we get started:

1. If you want some amazingly sound, totally non-intimidating, non-judgmental advice on how to pick a paint color based on my learnings from all the years I’ve spent staring at the paint chip display…

…read this post first.

2. If blue is not your thing—I have some other paint color posts, too.

Like my favorite white paint colors.

And my favorite gray paint colors.

3. Paint is a super tricky thing to see through the eyes of a computer screen. It can look one way on the computer screen and another way on your paint chip and still another way on your walls. That’s the amazingness of paint.  It looks your own special way in your own special house.  For questions on this—refer to number one.

4. If some of these colors seem a little overwhelming for your walls—think about furniture or even the back of a bookcase instead.

5. And lastly, these blues are amazing–the best blue gray paint colors. They are ones I’ve used in my own home and clients’ homes. They are colors I’ve tried again and again and work perfectly in so many different spaces.  They all have their own personality and their own character.  I hope you love them as much as I do.

The best blue gray paint colors

1. Sea Serpent SW 7615

This is the color I used in the office makeover above.

It’s such a pretty blue grey paint color.

We used it here as an accent wall and combined it with Oyster White SW 7637.

The combination is stunning.

2. Misty SW 6232

You can see it and all of its friends on the paint chip here.

I love it because it’s the blue grey paint you are always looking for.

You know when you have a room that you need a soft, pretty blue to use a backdrop for a space?

This is the blue for you. It makes a statement without being overpowering.

3. Adrift SW 7608

I get asked about the best blues to use for painted furniture all the time.

One of the best gray blue paint colors is Adrift SW 7608. It’s perfect for a furniture project.

This is the blue that’s kind of a Wedgewood blue and kind of a classic gray blue and kind of a soft blue and kind of a blue that you want to bring home and introduce to your family.

4. Online SW 7072

At first glance, this paint color looks gray on the paint strip.

But when painted on a wall, the true undertones come out.

It’s perfect gray blue paint for a bathroom or bedroom with its soothing, calming hue.

5. North Star SW 6246

I love a pale blue with a hint of gray.

You, too?

Oh, good.

This is the Sherwin-Williams blue gray paint color you’ve been looking for.

It’s one of the best blue gray paint colors and it reminds me of a hint of fog on a cloudy morning.

6. Naval SW 6244

This blue and I have been friends for years.

I was working on a project for a client that needed a true navy and I found this color and never looked back.

I’ve painted the built-in bookcase in the living room with Naval SW 6244.

I’ve also painted an entire room this color that you can see here.

It really is a true navy and the perfect classic paint color.

7. Gris SW 7659

I still remember when I found this paint color.

It was such a surprise when I painted it.

When I picked this Sherwin Williams blue gray color out in the paint store, I was expecting it to look more gray than blue.  But then?  After the room was finished it turned out more blue than gray.

This is one of my favorite blue-gray paint colors.

8. Rain SW 6219

This color is my go-to for a soft blue.

Its friend on the paint strip –Tradewind SW 6218 – is amazing, too.

It’s the best blue grey paint color and makes me think of rainy, summer afternoons.

It’s soft and subtle and a classic blue that works with almost any palette.

9. Storm Cloud SW 6249

I cannot even tell you how amazing this color is.

It has a superpower.

It’s the best blue grey paint color that adjusts to the lighting in the room and fills the space with the perfect amount of blue grey.

And then?

At night? It looks even more sophisticated.

10. Outerspace SW 6251

This gray blue paint color is on the same paint strip as Storm Cloud SW 6249.

It’s just a little darker than Storm Cloud SW 6249 and a little grayer than Naval SW 6244.

It’s perfect for an accent wall or a media room.

I used storm cloud on the walls in my living room & dining room. Also on the bottom half of our hallway. I knew I could get away with this color because I have so many white accents. My windows have beautiful white moldings and we put crown moldings around the entire rooms. All that white makes the blue absolutely beautiful.

I love paint! Paint and pillows are such great ways to give you a new and inexpensive look! Naval and Rain are 2 of my favorites! Wondering where you got your dining room rug! I(Beautiful just like the rest of your house!)

Thanks for doing all the work on the blues. They are difficult, as you are right-there are so many of them.

I love the different colors. We are getting ready to paint in the gray/blue color so that helps. Also, where did you get the rug in the first picture? Probably the living area. That is beautiful. Thank you Patty

KariAnne, all my trim is currently a warm, creamy white, similar to SW 6119 Antique White, and I really don't want to change it. I love the first six lighter blue samples but I'm wondering if any of them would work with my trim color. Any advice?

You might look at Online SW 7072 or North Star SW 6246 Those would look so pretty with Antique White SW 6119! Happy day friend! karianne

We painted North Star in our living room, and entry. I love it. (Shhh in our house it is a GRAY blue) I am currently planning to put board and batten in our dining room at about 2/3 of the way up the wall in a white and I'm painting the wall above it Stormcloud.

Blue is my favorite and one of the colors I chose for my accent colors (the others are peacock blue and lemongrass - a beachy theme) when I built my in-law. When it came to walls, I went neutral with edgecomb gray (not SW but the painter liked SW for the outside and BM for the inside). The other colors were variations from the same paint chip sample. I played it safe. Thanks for the daily escape...😉❤️

Blue is so pretty. BTW, I forgot to mention that I loved your picture from the last Thistlekeeping with the blue and yellow combination. Such happy colors.

  10. Image for Ann Z Ann Z

I'm keeping these colors for future reference, but what I'd really like to know is where did you find those pillows in the office chairs?!? I'm hoping they're still available as they'd be perfect in my bedroom!

  11. Image for Sarah Sarah

I love gray and blue. We painted our bedroom Sea Salt which tends toward gray green, our bathroom the lovely Riverway (which is more of a jewel tone than is shown online), our living areas are Pussywillow, and we are in the process of having our new kitchen cabinets painted Naval. I know, great timing. Back in February when we began the kitchen remodel we had no idea we’d have no kitchen for 2+ months. The only place I do NOT like gray blue is on my exterior trim. A previous owner installed country blue wrapped metal trim (the siding is a really light peachy beige - ugh). Can’t wait for that project to be at the top of the list!

I tried to “pin”your swatches and there wasn’t a “pin” button 🤗 Can you add a a pin button since this is such a wonderful visual and resource?!

Beth, That is so weird? It's there--- it's just hidden! LOL!  If you hover on the top left corner you can pin them. I'm pinning all of them---so if you send me the color---I can send you the pin! Happy day friend!karianne

Thank you for this! I’m thinking of going more blue in my house, powder room and front parlor for sure and maybe the laundry room. These are great choices and 2 I am definitely going to use!!

I love your advice on paint colors. I wish you could come to my house in Crawford and help me with a White color for the walls. I recently remodeled the kitchen and painted the cabinets with a BM morning dew. It is a gray color with a green undertone. I live in Houston right now and have had to rely on the contractors to complete the project. I want to pick a warm tone white. This is scary stuff.

Love love love blue!!! I have been so excited to see you use it with all of your neutrals. Have you ever used SW Tradewinds? It makes a statement but is very comforting.

It is so nice to see all 10 of these beauties together!! There is something about the magic of color that I love...even white, but blue always makes my heart sing:) Thanks for sharing your favorites!!!!!!!!!
