Communication is a funny thing.
Some people are texters.
Some people are e-mailers.
Some people don’t even communicate at all.
But me?
I’m a phone talker.
Well….actually….I’m an in-person talker, but when that’s not available…..
…..the phone is always the next best thing.
The other day I was on the phone with one of my friends.
I’m not sure how the conversation started, but I think it went something like this.
Ring. Ring.
Her: Hello?
Me: Did you know pumpkins are fruits? And not just a fruit? It’s a berry.
Her: (between giggles) Oh hi, KariAnne.
We proceeded to talk for a few more minutes and then suddenly she stopped the conversation mid-discussion with these profound statements:
Did you know that talking to you on the phone is like reading your blog posts? There’s no small talk at the beginning.
No hello. Or how are you? Or how’s the weather?
You jump immediately into the conversation mid-stream and it’s like we are pick up where we left off on the last phone call.
And then when you are done.
You’re done.
You simply say “Okay, bye.”
And that’s it…..until the next conversation where it all picks up right over again.
And again.
I had to think about that one.
I had to analyze my phone conversations and my communication to see if I agreed.
So I paid attention over the next couple of days.
And you know what? She was right.
99.99% of my conversations were EXACTLY how she described.
For example, when I write a blog post, I realized there’s not a lot of introduction.
The post almost always begins mid-stream.
Like this post.
I wanted to start off this post by telling you that I just realized…..real pumpkins are covered in dirt.
I was at the store the other day buying pumpkins to decorate with and I was so irritated because they were all dirty. I searched everywhere for clean pumpkins when all of a sudden it dawned on me that pumpkins grew on a vine right next to the ground and of course they would have dirt on them.
And did you know that pumpkins and cucumbers are cousins?
Maybe I communicate like that because I feel like we are friends with super interesting things to tell each other.
Maybe somewhere along the line asking about the weather got old.
Or maybe it’s simply because I have so much to say about pumpkins and fruit and back meadows and centerpieces that look like this….
…that I’m just trying to fit it all in.
Okay, bye.
PS Just kidding. How’s the weather. 🙂
PPS This post went out early today because I’m heading out on a boat with a commercial fisherman to take pictures of the sunrise.
PPPS If you like those log vases made out of concrete, they are AMAZING in person and super affordable. You can find them over at the shop along with that vintage farmhouse bread board.
I love your writing and all of your conversations!!
And did you know that if you give your pumpkins a quick shine with floor wax, they'll last the whole season long?
I didn't! That's brilliant!
I, for one, am glad you have so much to say, and so much to fit in, and super interesting things to tell, and that our conversations pick up where we left off, and that we are friends!
You my girl... are the master of conversation... I still see your smiling face on our first Skype chat and you are just as exciting in cyber life as in your blog posts. PS: I adore your new shop, and that mason jar holder, for all the jars I have. Those log holders in concrete are gorgeous too. x PPS: I can't wait to see your sunrise and meet your fisherman. xx
haha . Now you had me pause and think. I prefer to talk in person. next best way for me, text. but like you , I dive right in. Not a small talk person. Get to the meat of things :D But no, I did not know a pumpkin was a berry.... Ok, bye!
Hey, you got 4 kids and a husband and a blog and a fabric line and a new shop and things to do so you got to get to it!!!
Definitely don't change the way you communicate because it's working for us, and for you. Love your communication/writing style! There is no other blog like yours. You are unique and wonderful.
I do the same thing, when I actually have a phone or in person conversation which is rare! I just want to jump into the meat of the conversation without the niceties especially if I am talking to someone I know. My grandmother was the queen of such conversations and when she was done would be "Okay bye" and hung up! Thanks for that memory and can't wait to see the sunrise pics!
Did you know? Native Americans flattened strips of pumpkins, dried them and made mats. I think I've found a DIY project that you may have never tried. Have a good day friend!
Hi Karianne, I'm definitely a phone talker too. Hate texting. I force my kids to talk on the phone too. They're always saying "but Mom, no one talks on the phone anymore". To which I say, boo-hoo-but you must talk on the phone when you're home and your friends must also pick up the phone and call this house if they want to talk to you after school. That evokes lots of moans and groans... but they do it-lol. I'd rather they have superior verbal communication skills than great texting skills. They'll thank me one day. Maybe. Anyway, I didn't know that about pumpkins. Have fun on your boat trip. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. Enjoy your day.
OK, so Bye. P.S. I love you, Friend.
I personally think you're onto something............. right to the point!!! AND IN YOUR CASE... Well, we allll know the point is going to be so super informative ... exciting... and full of WOWS!!!!! Don't change a thing!!! Your friend nailed it!!!! Just keep on Jumping right in!!!! lolol... :)
I love reading your blog posts for those reasons - the way you write and that you get to the point! I'm sure if we talked on the phone, the conversations would go the same way! Love the great photos of the pumpkins, too! Blessings, Lanita
You made me smile today, and I really needed that.
Or maybe you just get so excited about what you are thinking about that going through pleasantries is just way too hard. I love it when people just say what they say. Especially when they are really excited about it. Have a nice boat ride, The Other Marian
Love your writing style. It truthfully feels like a close friend calling up with exciting news - no intro necessary just simply getting right to it. And by the way you little devil after seeing your pumpkin vignette with the concrete logs I had to hop over and purchase the set.
Hm, somehow I missed that pumpkins were berries in Botany class. I do remember that tomatoes are berries. And I love how you just jump into the conversation...feels like I've known you for years. I'm trying to figure out if I need those logs. Amazing! (Ok, I'm trying to justify buying them when I'm trying to get rid of stuff. :-/)
I am a phoner also. Call me anytime. :)
guilty of that also. (you already know I love you, and what the weather is)....in my case...lest I forget! I love your style I went to purchase the monogram. in the body of the text it has 4" $10, 10" $17.50, at checkout they are 4" $10, 10" 29.00. Just wondering at the difference. Thanks.
Watermelons are dirty too! Not as dirty as potatoes, but dirty.
What I love most about your posts is that it is just like you are talking. I'm a phone talker too, when real live talking is out, and tend to dive right in. I try to remember to ask " how are you?" For politeness sake, but then dive right in. I love your style, new friend. Xo Lidy
People tell me the same thing. "We never need to know what you are thinking or feeling, cause you just tell us." I can't help I'm passionate about WHATEVER subject being spoken about. I'll try not to be rude............love your blog, love your style. Now that I have spewed all over, I hope you have an amazing fantastic day.
I enjoy your posts so much as they always have such great tidbits of information and humor ~~ you put the best and most positive spin on my day...Thanks....and the pumpkin pictures are awesome. ♥
Hello. You make my day. Ok bye
Miz karianne, "You" are exactly what happens when a person is filled to overflowing with excitement....bursting at the seams to get it out before you explode! I find myself literally "running to keep up with you" as I read through most of your posts! hahaha, not complaining.....it's exhilarating to read you....and I can picture those twinkling brown eyes as they watch you, wondering at the vision and incredible spirit that oozes out of you. You go girl. ;)
Such a most beautiful outdoor Fall setting....A fruit?..and berry?...learn something new every day!...Have a great day Kari!
All I know for sure is that if my phone rang and you were at the other end, I would dance!!
you are YOU and that's what I love about you. :) I love your enthusiasm about everything! I can't imagine you ever raising your voice or not being happy. You should show us THAT side of you some day. hehehehe have a safe boat trip (jealous by the way) It's a work day for me.... painting, drilling, sawing etc gail
Enjoy the sunrise! Phone me any time!!
I love how you write, Karianne...it's how my brain thinks...it appears random, but always gets the point across lol.
We get you! You are bright, entertaining, informative, creative, enthusiatic, heartfelt, dedicated to design and your family and just plain fun to read. Many times you are sincere and touch on serious topics like the kiddos. Please don't change a thing. We love you just the way you are. Hey... maybe there's a song in there somewhere. :) Happy Fall Pumpin hunting day. Mmmm - a pumpkin pie! How good does that sound??
And boy do we love talking to you on the phone - it's always a treat! Happy Wednesday!
I'm a text to make a plan and chat for hours and hours in person over a pot of coffee or a bottle of wine kinda gal. Like you, I'm a skip over the small talk and get right to the meat and potatoes of the conversation. And that is why I enjoy your writing style so much...you speak my language girl!
P.S. Taking pictures of the sunrise on a fishing boat sounds AWESOME!!! Can't wait to see the photos KarriAnne☺
Well girl, I adore the way you are and wish I could tell a story as well as you. FYI, in person I SWEAR I'm exactly speak like you. Isn't it funny, I can't type exactly the way I speak? My family is so used to it they follow everything I say. Cindy
I just can't deal, you're too adorable. Love your blog posts and I look forward to reading every single word. Your friends who get to hang out with you in person are very lucky people. Kisses!
I love your post - you make me feel right at home:)
Hope I don't sound like a broken record, but waking up to your blog post is like waking up to my delicious-I-don't-need-anything-else iced coffee! What a joy!
I like how your write. I like straight to the point and you really make me laugh too. I don't like all the introductions when I read articles. Some go on forever. Love the fall pictures too. Makes me feel relaxed and at peace!!!
Kari Anne ..You are just too cute...I just adore your posts!! Where in the world did you get or how do you make those little string/rope pumpkins in the pictures.. Love Those.. Hope your Sunrise on the water was Beautiful this morning!!! Can't wait to see them!!! Patricia (NC Coast)
Too funny.......but then I never cared much for small talk anyway!
I was on a pier at sunrise, watching the shrimp boat dragging it's net getting shrimp. I would have taken a picture of the sunrise but I was too busy lowering the pier nut so hubby could bring up the sea trout that was hanging on to the shrimp at the end of the line :-D. The trout wouldn't let go so now he'll be a nice dinner for us. Oh!! Hi!! Friends don't have to be formal or make small talk -- we need to share and get all of our fantastic information out there. Can't wait to see your sunrise. Hopefully I'll be able to get a good shot of a sunrise -- that is if the sea trout will wait a few minutes before attacking the shrimp on the hook. Big hugs to you. Oh!! I didn't know it was a berry.
That's why I love reading your blog posts. I talk like you...and sometimes when there's no one around to listen, I talk to myself (but totally not in a crazy/scary way). Don't tell anyone k? When I talk to my husband I change subjects so fast sometimes he loses track of where I am and I have to say, "Make the jump with me...c'mon". So, I totally "get" your way of communicating and that's why I think I LOVE your blog so much. Hope the sunrise was beautiful!
You crack me up! The one time I tried to grow pumpkins I planted them on trellis like my cucumbers and they were beautiful! Hope your weather is great ;)
"You talk exactly the way you write" was my thought when I watched the video of your trip to Kirkland's.
Oh my goodness, my hubby does this same thing! I am really giggling now... My hubby, bless his heart, does it in conversation too. Here's an example- Me - I had fun carving pumpkins with the grandchildren today. Hubby- that lady Natalie always does a good job. Me- Who? did she spend time with her grandchildren today? Hubby- what? Me-I was talking bout the pumpkin carving Me-What are you talking about? Hubby- I need a haircut. xo
Your friend is on spot but this is what makes you so endearing. So, pumpkins are a berry...wow, who would have thought? Wondering if you made the little rope/twine pumpkins or if you bought them somewhere? Jane x
Pumpkins are a berry??? Who knew?! Now, if pumpkins are a berry and they are also related to cucumbers, does that make cucumbers a berry, too? And can you make pumpkin jam? I'm confused, but that certainly wouldn't be the first time nor the last...hehe! I think that, if your phone conversations are like the writing on your blog and would soooooooo often have me smiling, laughing, crying, on-the-edge of my seat, and completely satisfied, I wouldn't even say a word on the other end of the line...I'd be too blown away by the amazing conversation you were making...which is perfectly fine by me because I soooooooo suck at phone conversations! By the way, did you know that you are THE BEST? K, bye now! :)
Your blog post always make me laugh, so please don't change your style! There is a small orchard up the road from us that we have always gotten our pumpkins from every year since my girls were little and now their kids are little, you know tradition. but any way they had to put up a sign because someone from the "city" had gotten pumpkins from the field from them and called complaining after they had them home that they found a few bugs on them. They now have a sign that reads something like: Your pumpkins grow in the dirt where you pick them and we have no control over any insects found on them. Always makes me laugh!
I love the pumpkin tablescape you created!!! And those twine pumpkins are too cute for words!!!
well.. now it is Pumpkin time :) nice pics :) You are welcome to join SATURDAY SHOW OFF BlogParty Hugs from Håkan in Sweden
