Looking for outdoor summer decorating ideas? Here are some simple ways to add color and summer style to your outdoor spaces.

Just between us?
Have you ever noticed when I write that there’s a whole lot of “we” going on around here? As in “we” painted the porch and “we” painted a copper roof and “we” added new landscaping and “we” completely redid the back patio and “we” added new house numbers.
Truth?
In complete and honest transparency? “We” is divided up into two GIANT responsibilities.
There’s the“we” part that does the actual work.
And the “we” part that thinks up all the projects and supervises.
I’ll let you guess which part I am. π
But now?
When it comes to decorating? The roles kind of reverse.
There’s the “we” part that does the decorating.
And the other “we”? They get to sit under an umbrella with the sun setting in the background and relax with lemonade and a snack.
As well they should.
They’ve had a hard week of work.
Want to see what I’ve been up to?
Here are just a few outdoor summer decorating ideas from our back yard.
OUTDOOR SUMMER DECORATING IDEAS
Idea Number One: add a table
Now that the grass is green?
We moved the table to this part of the yard.
You can see the one I ordered here.
If you don’t have a table in your yard? You need one.
Seriously.
I cannot tell you how much we’ve used this area. In the last two week here are all the ways we’ve used this space:
- family dinners
- outdoor workspace
- coffee date
- early morning alone time listening to the birds
- late night snack listening to the crickets
Idea number two: add sturdy chairs
These chairs have been sitting outside for two months and they have held up amazingly well.
They are so solid and sturdy.
Personally, I like chairs with arms like these because they are more comfortable.
They match the table perfectly and they come as a single chair so you can order as many as you need.
You can see them here.
Outdoor summer decorating idea number three: add comfortable cushions
Just between us?
This is my chair.
I LOVE this pillow so much. It’s super comfortable and now that I’ve added the striped chair cushion, it’s extra cozy.
I sat here yesterday with my computer and watched my husband plant hydrangeas for Mother’s Day.
Here are just a few of my favorite cushions:
- this striped one
- this tassel one
- this black and white one
- this one that looks like jute
- this diamond one
Idea number four: add an umbrella
When it comes to outdoor summer decorating ideas? Don’t forget about the umbrella.
This table gets a lot of shade because of the big trees in our yard, but there are still times of the day when the sun comes in from the back and you need a little more protection.
That’s why I was so happy that I found this umbrella.
It is an AMAZING DEAL.
It’s under $50 and it tilts and raises and lowers and has the cutest black scalloped edges around the edge.
You can see it here.
Summer outdoor decorating idea number 5: Add a bench
But why stop with the yard?
This area that everyone who comes in our back door looks at needed a little refresh.
I wanted to keep it simple, so we added this bench.
I love a bench in an area like this because it’s not fussy and fills up the space and looks neat.
You can see the bench here and the cushions here and here.
idea number six: add planters
And lastly? I added these two rust planters by the back door.
They’re filled with hydrangeas that bring in color to the back porch and they were super inexpensive.
You can see them here.
But wait.
I forgot one more part of the “we.”
Buddy.
He helped us add this vintage dog door knocker to the back door (outdoor summer decorating idea number seven).
The faithful helper that watches over every project who never leaves our side and is always ready for a tail wag of approval.
I couldn’t imagine a project without him. π

So many beautiful ideas! A table with an umbrella is a must in our home. Our patio gets a ton of sun and we just live for dining outside. It's not summer without it! I really love your bench...I need to figure out a place I can put one of those. Hope you are staying safe and healthy! (sorry if this a duplicate comment, I've been having problems lately...ugh.) Shelley
OH your backyard looks gorgeous! I am loving the bench by the backdoor and of, course that door knocker. Buddy just makes this area look doubly welcoming! The table and chairs look wonderful, especially dressed up with the great cushions. And I'm really loving that umbrella...reminds me of old-style umbrellas, but with a modern look!
Looks great! The prices are so good, too. On Mother's day i planted annuals and just came home with more soil to do some containers for my patio. And Hi, Buddy!
Hi Again, I was wondering, how is Buddy doing? Hope you had a lovely Mother's Day!
It all looks so inviting. The grass is beautifully green and the table and chairs look so welcoming. Of course I adore your back door porch, and the bench is a great addition.
Buddy the helper! So cute! Everything looks welcoming and comfortable! Love how beautiful everything looks!
Hey! That same βweβ does all the work around here too! When I help I start to wonder if my ideas are really as great as I thought! π
That vintage dog door knocker is so cute, i love it. You have a wonderful back porch and yard, ideas were nice too.
Wow! I looks totally fantastic and very cosy. I did almost the same in our garden - brought out the sittingroom and it has been a succes ever since:-)
With such an amazing backyard - looks great with your pretty new items btw - when are you guys going to use some of that vast space to put in a pool for all those hot hot Texas summer days? Just saying. Because it snowed on Saturday here in Ohio. :- (
Your table and chairs look so pretty. I love the umbrella! Love the door knocker and you know I love Buddy ! Thanks for showing him...Scobbee and Merlin says to tell him Hello.
I just love all the Better Homes & Gardens things at Wal-Mart!! I am so glad you are an influencer for them. You show us all the pretties!! Hope your Mother's Day was grand!! I actually ordered a Better Homes & Gardens two chair set with a table for my front porch. We are getting it rebuilt to match the back porch we had to have built last year, because it fell off the house....with me on it!! Ahhhhhh!! I am looking forward to the new front porch!! I already have all my new furniture and decorations picked out....yes, I ALWAYS put the horse before the cart. Lol!! They are supposed to start one day this week. Yay!!
Your comments about "we" was so funny and also in my case so true. Just yesterday I was directing my better half on where to plant some new decorative grasses in the garden and where to move the large containers till I liked the arrangement. He is so patient when I change my mind several times! And of course both dogs were also supervising.ππ Love your new table and chairs but be warned . The" we "who cuts your grass may get tired of moving it when cutting and trimming and I speak from experience. Our table ,chairs and umbella are now on the deck. Just saying!π Stay well.
Your back door area looks so pretty and welcoming!
Everything is so beautiful. My favorite part of course, is Buddy. He is so beautiful.
Love the ideas. Where is the welcome mat from? Thanks
Totally agree, a table with comfy chairs is essential in my backyard too. And I love the floor treatment on the back entry, and the bench too. Pat
What wonderful ideas! They all just scream βsummerβ!
Love the way you decorate for EVERY season!!! xoxo
Your beautiful porch makes me SO excited to get my outdoor areas ready for summer! Everything looks beautiful! Happy Wednesday, my friend~
