Want to spruce up your kitchen decor? Try out this easy DIY vintage recipe wall to add a fun element to your plate rack and try something new.
If you own a level and you actually use it. Stop right here.
This post is not for you.
We have plenty of other posts here at thistlewood. We have posts on old Christmas decorations and posts on why people were late to book club and even a post or two on simply nothing at all and a variety of other scintillating topics for all our level-owning readers.
Take my advice. I’m not really sure you can handle this one.
You see, this post involves painter’s tape, scissors, a plate rack and a vinyl maker named Greta.
Not a level in sight.
However, if you like to wing your way through home decorating projects with a shrug of your shoulders and a flip of the hair and a throw-caution-to-the-wind type attitude…..
……start taking notes.
DIY Vintage Recipe Wall
1. Get inspired
Start the recipe wall project by reading blogs. Read a lot of blogs. Get inspired by said blogs. When you are reading these inspirational blogs, stumble across a project where someone has put a recipe on a wall behind some plates.
File the idea away.
Wait two years.
Start planning your recipe wall and try to remember where you saw it featured, so you can give them credit for the original idea.
Keep thinking.
2. Create your vinyl letters
Call your friend Greta or your own vinyl maker or plug in your Cricuit.
If none of the above apply, read this tutorial on how to make your own vinyl letters.
3. Find a recipe and create this DIY vintage recipe wall
Dust off your plate rack and choose your favorite recipe.
(Unfortunately, I didn’t use my favorite recipe. I couldn’t use it because my favorite recipe is found on the back of the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese box and only has four ingredients).
And it’s not really cute.
And a recipe wall always starts with a recipe that looks cute.
Or maybe just tastes good. That’s better cute every time.
4. Cut into strips
Once your vinyl cutter has finished your cute plate rack recipe, cut it into strips and attach it to the wall with painter’s tape. Tape the entire recipe to the wall.
Stand back.
Decide you don’t like the layout of the strips of vinyl and take them all down and tape them up again.
And again.
And again.
5. Make sure the lines are straight
Repeat step 4 as many times as necessary.
Do not use a level.
Remember—you have thrown caution to the winds all while shrugging your shoulders and flipping your hair.
You are a care-free project maker.
6. Attach vinyl
When you are satisfied with your vinyl placement. Pull off the backing and attach vinyl to plate rack.
Add plates.
Position the plates to hide the places where your vinyl placement might have benefited from using a level.
This step may require a lot of plates 🙂
7. Pat yourself on the back
Stand back and stare at your plate rack. Think how great it is to be a carefree, shoulder-shrugging project creator. Think how much time you saved repositioning those letters over and over and over again instead of just using a level.
And then start saving your pennies to take your friend Greta to the Caribbean 🙂

Your project is PERFECT in every way... Your commentary about it being anything but perfect was entertaining, but it is nonetheless a lie. ;) Oh, and by the way... YOU are at the top of my list of inspiring bloggers! xo
I didn't stop reading! I must be one of those "wingers", too! Love the recipe wall!
I love it! Levels beware...you may never be needed again! Plus I love the plate rack. I'm looking over my shoulder to find a place in our kitchen for one.
i'm new to this blog. it's wonderful! congratulations! i really like the plate rack that you have in these pictures. did you do that also and blog about it? (she asks hopefully....) or did your house come with that? i have a perfect spot for that.
Wow, what an amazing project! Now where is my level?????
Your recipe wall is gorgeous, you've done a lovely job Kari Ann! I've got this linked to my recipe art post too today, for inspiration!
Lovely project! Level or not :). Now I'm looking around my kitchen for a place to make a plate rack/iun-level recipe wall :). This is great!
What a wonderful idea that I will surely create in our next home...a move to North Carolina maybe in our future! Happy Spring, Sis, XOXO
You are hilarious and awesome. I love that recipe wall. I'm kind of a level-lovin' girl, but I can also throw caution to the wind with the best of em. Now I just need to find a wall to do this to and someone named Greta. xoxo
"Care free project maker". I love it and I'm going to adopt that title! Until now my method has been described as "The Wail Away Method". I am not known for my patience or attention span, but I love to get things done. (Found you via Red Bird Vintage. This plate rack is adorable.)
You tickle my funny bone- great project, awesome sense of humour. Thank goodness for the ability to laugh at ourselves. Trying to look like we have it all together is so...yesterday. Hugs and Happy Easter
Hi, Your wall is adorable! What color vinyl did you use? It looks like black but I can't be absolutely sure as several of my levels are blocking my view ;-) Thanks so much!
