If there is one thing I’ve learned on this decorating journey…

…decorating doesn’t have to be expensive.

Not for one hot minute.

Some of my favorite rooms on this planet are full of shopping my house or shopping by the side of the road and mirrors that showed up at my front door.

I even wrote an entire series on how to decorate your house for free.

You can see it here.

If you are looking to makeover a room in your house—one of the easiest places to start is with a new rug. When I first started decorating I’d save up all my pennies for rugs in my house. I’m not sure what happened over in rugland—but today? The cutest, prettiest rugs are now SO AFFORDABLE. And there are SO MANY to choose from.

(total aside: the rug in this room used to be seagrass (you can see the before and after here) and when I changed it out to this blue and white rug the entire room changed.

So in honor of spring and all the amazing ways we can makeover our house on a budget, I’ve found 10 beautiful, amazing rugs (most of which I have in my home) that won’t break the bank or your decorating budget.

Are you ready?

(total aside: I self-tanned yesterday and half of me is orange. I need a distraction.)

Let’s go shopping. 🙂

My Top Ten Favorite Rugs from WalMart

Number 1: blue and white rug

If y’all only knew the amount of messages I get about this rug.

It’s one of my favorite rug purchases I’ve ever made.

You can see it here (the 8′ x 10′ is under $150).

It’s super stain-resistant (Buddy has tested this) and comes in a zillion different sizes including a runner.

Number 2: cream and white rug in the entryway

This rug is so pretty because it has layers.

It’s really thick and the colors go so well in any neutral space.

This rug is actually a 5’x 7′, but comes in TONS of different sizes and you can see it here.

number 3: distressed gray area rug

This is the current rug that we have in our family room.

It’s a 12′ x  15′ but it comes in tons of different sizes and colors.

You can see it here.

number 4: patterned gray rug

Here’s a different version with gray as the background instead of white.

A similar damask pattern, just a different look.

You can see it here.

number 5: seagrass rug

And here’s one of my all-time favorites.

I had these seagrass rugs all over the farmhouse in Kentucky.

They are amazing durable (although a little rough on bare feet sometimes).

You can see it here.

Number 6: natural fiber rug

Here’s another natural fiber rug option from the post yesterday.

This rug is not quite as stiff as the seagrass rug and much softer on the feet.

The rug from this photo is discontinued, but I found its identical twin here.

Number 7: brightly patterned rug

This rug is everything.

I cannot even tell you how brilliant it is in person.

The colors are absolutely amazing.

You can see it here.

Number 8: muted colorful rug

This is a similar version to number 7, but the colors are a little more muted than in the previous version.

It would work perfectly with colorful or neutral furnishings.

You can see it here.

Number 9: plaid rug

This rug was the surprise hit of the Christmas season.

Maybe because it’s just a little over $100 for an 8′ x 10′?

It sold out TWO TIMES. Every time they’d get it back in stock, it would sell out again.

It’s in stock right now and it’s so cute in any room that needs a little color.

You can see it here.

Number 10: black plaid

This is the red rug’s cousin.

I’ve been looking at this for a while and trying to figure out where to use it.

It’s just a little over $100 for an 8′ x 10′, too.

You can see it here.

And one more for the road.

Here’s a simple tip—if your budget won’t allow you to buy a larger rug? Why not purchase a small rug like this one and layer it at an angle over a larger rug you may already have—like this one.

10 rugs and a tip.

This post is getting better and better. 🙂

I hope one of these rugs inspired you.

Be sure and let me know if you have any questions or need me to try and source something for you.

you know I love your rugs...and have the blue and white one...agree 100% with your review. My new puppy, Ralph, has tested it too! :) But, I am totally distracted by your 'half orange' from self tanner statement. I cannot WAIT for the story. Happy Day to YOU!

Hi Carrie! Can you please tell me where you got the living room rug and the name of the rug? Thx so much! Donna I love your rooms!!

Pretty rugs. I have a hand-hooked rug that was made for me as a wedding gift and I've considered getting a larger rug to place under it. Anywhooo .... yes, do tell about the half orange body! I have found that the Jergen's self-tanner lotion unfortunately turns my lily white legs orange, so I no longer use it. Sally Hansen leg makeup all the way! The brand Soap and Glory used to make a wonderful tinted body lotion but they have done away with it. Boo. I have found that I can mix the Sally Hansen with a little body lotion and use it on my arms to give me a light glow (believe me, I am VERY pale and can use all the help I can get!). I'm not looking to be swarthy--I just don't want to blind people with the whiteness of my skin.

I have the red plaid one-love it. Thanks for the info on the others! I tried a spray on tanner once and it drove me crazy. Everything wiped it off, so I ended up blotchy and orange. :(

Hello! I just LOVE the look of your family room, sooo cozy!!! can I ask you what is the color of the walls in your family room? I love creams and greys but sometimes I am unsure if they will go well together... it seems to me, though, that that is just the combo that you have in your family room...

Great post!! I’m looking for indoor outdoor rugs I can use on our screened in porch......and was wanting some that added interest and color (vs.the plain jute or sea grass). Do you have any recommendations?

  6. Image for Marlene Stephenson Marlene Stephenson

I have three of these, blue/white, brown /blue and seagrass, you are an inspiration. Wish I had a daughter like you, because my sons are not any help when I am trying to make decorating decisions, lol!

Great post ! I would have hesitated to look at Walmart but seeing these rugs in your home has allayed any fears

All of your rugs are wowzers - but then, you have such great taste! P.S. self tanners make me nervous - when it goes on translucent, you never now if you are going to turn out looking like an orange, a golden Godess or just bleached wood!

I have a treasured collection of heart-shaped pebbles after reading one of your posts. Love your humor, you are such an inspiration - thank you!

So do you have issues with the rugs that have the "yarn"/thread wrapped around the outside as the "binding"? (sorry if using terms incorrectly!). I have with them fraying in high traffic areas which is where most of my rugs are.
