Looking for simple ideas to decorate for fall? Here are tons of living room fall decor ideas and simple projects for the fall season.
Please tell me you are sitting down.
You might even need to grab coffee for this post. I’ll wait a minute if you have to get up for refreshment.
Are you ready?
Remember back at the beginning of August when I told you I was going to makeover this room in a month with some of my friends, Leslie and Marian and Melissa? The challenge was to reenvision and reimagine and recreate a room in 30 days.
30 days.
It seems like forever and a hot minute all at the same time.
My goal for this space was to make it cozy. I wanted to add layers and textures and surfaces that warmed it up for the fall and winter ahead.
And now?
Without further adieu.
Drum roll please.
HEERRRRREEEEEEEEE IIIIIISSSSSS MMMMYYYYYY RRRRROOOOOOOMMMMM.
I know, RIGHT?
Please scroll up and look at the before.
And then?
Scroll down and look at the after with all those living room fall decor ideas.
Oh, wait.
But there’s more.
There’s a whole other side with a faux finish puzzle table.
Doesn’t it look like it’s a cozy afternoon about to happen?
Some of the changes are subtle, but sometimes it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference.
Truth?
It really started with this rug. It had me at that bold pattern.
You can see the chairs here.
I’ve never gone with a bold rug in here and I’m so happy that I did.
It grounds the room and makes such a difference in the space. This rug is really thick and plush and has layers to the pattern and depth of the wool that makes it feel so cozy.
I ordered it from Overstock in a 9’x 12′ and it comes in tons of different sizes.
If you are looking for a good rug? I have so many fun options on this post.
Then we hung up this chandelier over the puzzle table in the back of the room and added hardware to the french doors.
It’s on a dimmer now to adjust the lighting in the room.
It came from Lamps Plus, but it’s discontinued now.
Then it was time to add in layers living room decor ideas full of cozy and fall to the space.
I found this pumpkin pillow at Kirkland’s.
The pumpkin is slightly faded and the perfect fall accent. It comes with the pillow form trimmed with gold edging.
Looking for more living room fall decor ideas? I rounded up my favorites (including this pillow) here.
You can see the chairs here.
You can find the pillows here and this tasseled throw is one of my favorites.
I ordered it here and have it folded over the back of a chair, just waiting for a really good book.
Here’s another really cozy throw that is similar to the pom pom throw I have on the other side of the room.
I also showed you how to distress this table in minutes.
It’s such an easy technique and you can layer it and distress it to match your room.
You can see the DIY here.
Sigh.
It turned out even better than I imagined.
It’s the perfect room to welcome September.
And now?
This has been A MONTH. I need a little break, so I’m off to read a magazine and watch a movie.
And I know the perfect room to watch it in.
You can find me in the chair right there on the left. 🙂

Can I ask a dumb question? What do you do with the pillows when someone wants to sit down? My family HATES all of my pillows, my dog hates them (she flings them on the floor to find a spot to nestle into), and I guess I just wondered am I the only one who deals with this? :)
Same here. I don't have a dog but I have a husband. I end up straightening all the pillows, throws and decor pieces the next am. And every morning my thoughts are the same.....you are not decorating for anyone but yourself, and if lots of pillows and throws make you happy, do it!!!
My very favorite thing was the new rug. I loved it and it made a terrific impact with the two new brown chairs.
KariAnne!! This is GORGEOUS!!! The pictures of this room make me want to redo my living room!! I LOVE it!!! Hope you and yours are all well, safe and healthy!
Love it!! That rug with those chairs!! It just adds the perfect warmth to the space! So perfect! Good job!
Really nice...love the redo, the coffee table looks so nice with the darker tone, the hardware is fabulous. You don't mention the brown chairs, but really like the look, very cozy and natural.
I just picked myself up off the floor...I love it. All your rooms are amazing. That rug is amazing. All of it is amazing. Sorry need to keep this short...going back to look at that beautiful reveal again😊
Oh KariAnne!!!! That is absolutely beautiful!!! Honestly I love every little detail and the rug makes all the difference. I am all about cozy!!
Has it already been a warp speed month!! That was fast! I love the coziness of this all, especially the rug with the new chairs. All your little attentions to detail add so much too! Enjoy your new space!
So beautiful I could cry ha!
You know I'm not a "blue person" so these colors are much more to my liking, but I'd even jettison the gray. This really looks like a welcoming, comfortable room and will be especially fun as you continue to decorate for fall and winter. Looks great! Enjoy your hard work.
Could we see the faux finish puzzle table more closely???? I suspect that it may be GORGEOUS!!!
Nevermind...I looked again and found the link! I was right though, GORGEOUS!!!
What a great room makeover! I love all the texture and you for sure achieved the cozy vibe you were going for. Absolutely beautful!
Renae, dont feel alone. Your dog sounds alot like my husband who I adore except when he throws my pillows.
Where did you find those great dark pumpkins in your dough bowl?
OK, OK - you;re holding out on us!! We need to see a good pic of the French doors and the stenciled game table!!!!!!!!!!!! It looks simply beautiful.
Wow-what a change. Love how cozy it is and the mix of textures! You nailed it!
The living room looks great!!!!! Your rug is great as it draws you in and then the rest of the room. Just beautiful job!!!!
Where are the lamps from?
You've done it again!!!
I am sooooo in love with this room! I am not a fan of browns...but I love this! And I was about to shop the chandelier when I read it was out of stock. If you find me in the corner with my coffee...just ignore me. I’ll just be breathing in tranquility and peace for a few moments. You knocked this one out of the park!❤️
Oh, so pretty! A total success! I just love the pattern, color and texture! You'll have many hours of happy family life in this room -- I can hear the laughter! Bravo!
Is there a link to the brown chairs?
I want to jump inside this photo and live in there! Right there in one of those new brown chairs. Not only because it's the closest to the kitchen but because I can gawk at every beautiful detail and every nook and cranny around the room. Plus, I feel my feet would touch the ground in that chair. Love this!
KariAnne, this room is gorgeous!! I loved the room before and didn't think it needed to be changed at all...but the new look is just stunning! I adore that rug and all the layering of neutral colors. Awesome job - now enjoy relaxing in there with a magazine! Cheers! Shelley
KariAnne, you have created a warm and welcoming room. I want to curl up on that sofa with a good book and a cup of tea.
KariAnne, It's a stunner! That rug is perfect for cozy evening with the family. You just always amaze me with your classic, comfy style!
KariAnne, I love it all! I have a vintage dough bowl from my grandmother on my kitchen island and have plans to fill it with pumpkins too! It looks incredible, and OMG that rug. And OMG the light fixtures. Love the natural elements with the cozy cream and tans. The before was pretty too, but the after is SPECTACULAR, my friend!
Love all of the changes- very cozy and inviting. I have been looking for brown leather chairs and yours are in the style I have been searching for- can you please provide a link for them?
Actually, you haven’t given me a desire to re-do my room. But I have decided to come live with you and submerse myself in your creativity and beautifully decorated rooms? Grandmas moving in!!!! (You’ve been warned!)
Love, love, love it ALL! I’ve had “tobacco” colors in our Master for years, and have never tired of them, but I’m in love with *anything brown!* So I must ask where the chairs came from, please?!? I have both leather and fabric furniture in brown, and these are a really yummy, comfy looking style!! Your room is amazing, as ever, KariAnne! I was so anxious to see everything come together, and it is AWESOME, as is always expected from you. (Now when are you getting your own “home show?”) Thanks for so many amazing ideas and diys, too!
Gorgeous KariAnne! I love these colors, and you've done a wonderful job with all the beautiful details! I bet your family loves it too. Brava!
Friend!!! You nailed it! Pure warmth and cozy all day long. Love the rug you started with and a little gaga over that throw with the tassels. Congratulations on completing such a beautiful space - you definitely deserve a little downtime. 😊
I love all of it! Especially the dough bowl and the distressed table!
Lovely room. That dough bowl caught my eye almost immediately. My dad used to tell me about my Italian grandmothers dough bowl. She made more than a dozen loaves of bread in it each week. I can only imagine it looked much like yours, patinaed with use and age. I wish I had it, but it's long gone.
I, too, love the chairs. I'm hoping you will give us a glimpse of the puzzles later this fall ....
Where is the dough bowl from?
You’ve made this room even more inviting and cozy!! The rug is super pretty and is a nice foundation 🤩
Oh it looks like a great place to cuddle in on a cool Fall evening. I love all your little extras, they are special and really add to this space, i am so inspired. Thanks and have a cozy evening.
KariAnne dear, Your newly decorated room is "cozy" personified. The myriad of textures, lovely shades of brown, and creative placement of furniture meld together in marvelous ways. I especially love the worn patina of the brown chairs. They inspire because I've been playing with ways to incorporate brown into the blues in my decor. Now, I'm going to grab a snicker doodle and read the story again! Fall hugs, Diney
The rug is absolutely gorgeous! It's so fall-like here today!! It's overcast and 75 degrees! Can you believe it?? I'm ready to dig out all those pumpkins I bought for the wedding last fall! LOL!
Karianne, This room is just wonderful. Warm and cozy but sophisticated at the same time. I can't wait to start my fall decorating in our family room but it will have to wait till after Labor Day. I had rolled up our rug and removed the curtains for summer so the first thing after removing my coastal theme will be to bring in a new rug I have and hanging some drapes. The room is neutral but the rug is in tones of burnt orange, taupe and a bit of navy blue. Hope it looks half as pretty as yours. After it is put down fall decorating can begin. Love this job. Thanks for sharing with us.
I love the new look... Amazing transformation! May I ask where you obtained the new sofa's?... they are exactly what I am looking for! Thanks!
What a lovely makeover, KariAnne! Love all the neutral elements, and that table! LOVE! It's reminiscent of the blue scrolly table I copied from my media console! And the pumpkins and such in the dough bowl... so pretty!
Just beautiful! So serene, peaceful & a perfect palette for fall!
Wow, an amazing makeover. I absolutely love all the neutrals. I went to order the blanket with the tassels (Love) I just couldn’t see spending $88.00 for shipping. So I ordered the PomPom throw from Pottery Barn. Thank You for listing where your items can be purchased. Cheers, Vickey
It's GORGEOUS KariAnne! It doesn't really feel like a Thistlewood room, until you look closely! I love the warm tones and would love to know where the chairs are from!
This! Oh my goodness! So beautiful! There are so many pieces that I love, it’s hard to pick one! I’d have to say THAT rug and THOSE throw pillows....😍 Well done! You always do such a beautiful job!!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!! I am in the midst of redoing my great room with browns and taupe. I planned a rug shopping trip this Friday but I think you just saved me a trip with your rug!! Thank you. But as many have asked, where did you get those rust brown chairs?????
Absolutely beautiful . I love the changes . You are a master at creating beautiful spaces. It is perfect to my down to the tiniest little thing . KariAnne you never cease to amaze me. Your home is so warm and cozy . Great make over.
Oh my goodness! I thought the before was good. This is fabulous! Cozy is the exact word for it. I love the rug and the baskets with the throws. The only thing I don’t like, you just added a room to my list to makeover. 🤗
What a wonderful transformation. I love this room, it's so subtle but also outstanding. Well done.
Perfection! I hope you enjoyed your book and movie. I LOVE the light and wish it wasn'ts sold out!
So beautiful!! I especially love those chairs. Can you share a source?
Spot on perfection, KA!!!! . I LOVE what you've done to this room. Every detail is just so perfect. Now I wish I hadn't sold my two tobacco chairs, lol. I was ready for a change and now I want them back. (Been years though so oh well.) I really love this room. WELL DONE!!!
Wow, what a transformation! It doesn't look like the same room. Bravo! I too would love to know where your couches are from. Your house is simply beautiful.
Love the wall color! Can you tell Me what color and who makes the paint. It’s beautiful!
Beautiful.
What a beautiful and cozy room you have created, KariAnne! Love all your special touches that just add so much to this room, too. Thanks for sharing this room with us! Hope you can sit, relax and enjoy your creations! You have been given a wonderful gift! Bless you!
I love this room. It's so soft and warm. Brown doesn't have to be dark and ugly and you absolutely hit this one out of the park. I wish I had a nice hot cup of coffee and I can just sit here and look at it! :) Well done!!
Well! I'm not at all surprised at how beautifully it turned out, Miz karianne. What does surprise me is your use of the neutral browns. That's my favorite for my home because it's so warm. I love the chairs, but I'm totally smitten with the way the coffee table and rug go together....as if they were made to be partners for life!
Beautiful job KariAnne! It definitely is giving off a cozy fall vibe! ❤️
Very lovely indeed! Info please on the end tables, the small round and the glass square one.
It’s simply stunning! I love all the details and the larger frames above the sofa! So beautiful!
Absolutely Stunning!! What an Awesome job you did! I am so in Love with it all. Honey you enjoy your rest and may God continue to Bless you.🥰🥰
I love it! I love the depth and deminsion that the rug and the brown chairs at to the room. Great job Karrianne. I would love to see a better pic of the puzzle table.
OHHHHH WOW!!! KariAnne, it looks magnificent! You brought life to the room and made it so cozy! You get an A+. Congrats for a wonderful redo! 😁❤
Love it. In five inch caps. Love the brown rich fall colors. The rug! Pretty sure I will have to have. its gorgeous.
KariAnne...girlfriend you've done it again! A fabulous makeover for the family room! Love it lots!!! Are those the leather chairs from your office? What did you do with the striped ones? I'm not a brown person, but the warmth those chairs are to the whole room... aahh! Thank you for sharing your home! Susan
