It all started with this sofa.
(Don’t you just love stories that start like that).
Me, too.
Well…actually….it started with this sofa and a blank room and a design challenge that looked a little something like this:
10 bloggers.
10 rooms.
A challenge from La-z-boy.
And 48 hours from beginning to end…..to transform a room from this….
….to this.
It the most amazing 48 hours ever….in the history of ever.
Truly.
(well…..except for that wedding and the birth of some children)
Especially for someone who has spent a lifetime shopping thrift stores and yard sales…..and the side of the road.
After it was over….on the drive home through the mountains of the beautiful state of North Carolina….I just sat….
….and rearranged the furniture again. 🙂
Here’s all the living room design ideas and details on how I did it.
1. Start with an inspiration piece
I started with the Delaney sofa in Marlo and added nickel nail head trim.
And then I found the coffee table and wheeled it right into the centerpiece of the room.
The perfect inspiration piece for an industrial farmhouse look.
2. Add a little height
I knew that the sofa and the coffee table were low horizontal pieces and I needed some height.
I found these industrial bookcases with the metal and the wood and I styled them with a mixture of old and new.
The set of three baskets with the iron and burlap were the foundation and I stayed with a neutral pallet.
Oh….and the green.
That little bit of green breaks up all the neutral and helps plant the idea of freshness.
Total pun intended.
3. Layer in your patterns
This houndstooth pattern was next….along with the pop of orange.
I wanted to break up the neutrals and orange seemed like the perfect choice….
…..along with a little more green.
4. Layer in texture
I chose the ottoman in the picture above because it was fun and not too serious.
And then I found this leather chair with a tufted back which anchored the space along with the reclaimed wood table.
I added throws and books and stool and a random metal ball.
You can also see a close-up of the silver nail heads on the sofa.
5. Finish off the look with fresh greenery
I wish I knew the name of these flowers.
I added them right before I took the picture.
They came from the fresh flower truck along with the fresh flowers on the bookcase in the white vase.
To make the bookcase arrangement I just gathered greenery….added the white flowers and sticks for height.
I wish I had a fresh flower truck in our neighborhood.
Here….we just shop the fields. 🙂
And now….my wonderful, incredible, amazing rock star friend…..
……here’s the details on the contest.
You see….this is a contest for our readers to pick a favorite room.
And one lucky voter will win $10,000.00.
Every vote counts as an entry for a chance to win $10,000 in La-Z-Boy furniture
And you can vote once per day until December 20th when voting ends
You can see all the other blogger rooms and details on the contest and vote….here.
And I’m crossing my fingers and hoping you like textures and patterns and reclaimed wood and metal bookcases and industrial coffee tables and creamy sofas with nail head trim…..
…..and “the little industrial farmhouse room that could.”

Love this room and everything in it. I also love the brick look you added to the wall. That totally added a new dimension that makes it feel like a warehouse loft. What is so great is that all the iron, wood, brick and so forth all still feel warm and cozy with the choices you added for softness and comfort. You really have a talent for pulling it all together. Great job on this room!
What a beautiful room Karianne! I was a spaz looking at all the pics...I love THAT...oh but THIS is awesome! Everything you picked seemed perfect. Really love the sofa and the coffee table. Hope you win!! Mimi
Now you know I voted for you... not just because I adore you but because you did a stellar job designing this room! The scale, texture, style and form are all on point. I have been designing spaces for many years and I must say that you have some mac daddy skills miss Karianne!! Big hugs my friend!!
Always beautiful!!!! Love it!!! The pillows on the sofa are amazing! Are they from La-z-boy also? Just simply gorgeous!
Kay! Yes....everything in the room (with the exception of the stool and the vases on the coffee table) came from the La-z-boy showroom!
Of course I will vote for your room. Love it, and love you, too.
That was the most fun I've had with a cup of coffee in forever! Loved looking at all the rooms and seeing who designed them. They were all beautiful in their own way, but yours far outdid anyone's! I could see myself sitting in that chair and reading a book! It made me want to go to Lazyboy and do some shopping. All I need is that $10,000.
Love this room! :)
Beautiful room, KariAnne. I love it!
Uh excuse me, but was there ever any doubt? Of course, we are voting on yours!!!!! When I first saw this room it just says "Come in and stay awhile." It is so warm, cozy, and inviting. It is just so KariAnne! Love all the different textures and styles. My favorite piece has to be the coffee table. i know it is supposed to be the sofa, but I just love the coffee table. What an awesome experience for you! Woo, hope I win the $10,000. Thanks, KariAnne
If they lined up the rooms side by side and we had to guess who designed this room…hands down, I would have said "KariAnne"….it sos fabulous and your name is written all over it!…Great challenge and it has been fun going along on your journey!!!
I personally couldn't see myself living in any of the other rooms. You nailed it with Farmhouse Industrial!! I'm so glad you had a lot of fun doing this project! Always, with my best wishes!
Your room is amazing! There are some other rooms that I like but yours is truly my favorite. Merchandised perfectly too. You can count on my vote.
Luv it all! Could you please let me know more about the area rug? Looking for something just like this to be the foundation carpet to entry Thanks!
Vonda, The area rug came from the La-z-boy showroom! It is an indoor/outdoor carpet and perfect for an entryway!
Love the room you pulled together! The look is fresh and unique and does not exude big box retailer. You did a beautiful job and get my vote. What a great opportunity!
I love your room! You choose the perfect accessories to go with the fabulous sofa! I'm on my way to vote! Good luck!
KariAnne, I love your room. The warmth of it, draws me in and to be honest, I'm a "homey cozy" all year round kind of girl. In my eyes, you are the WINNER!
You did an amazing job! Love it all :-) La-Z-Boy carries great quality items -- I would love to win any of the furniture pieces that you chose --or better yet, that $10,000 so I could just have your room put on a truck and delivered to my home!
Miz karianne, everytime I see this fantastic room I want more and more of it! It almost makes me want to go back to work.....sigh, "almost" being the operative word here....so I'll enter the contest instead! You know, I keep telling you how great and talented you are......one of these days you're going to put some poor, unsuspecting interior designer out of a job.... Are you still bouncing off the walls with excitement over this incredible experience?
Sharon, The best was.....all the way home....I was telling anyone who would listen. Random people at the gas station....the lady at McDonald's. I'm not sure if North Carolina recovered. :)
pssstttt.....your room is my favorite. It's perfect! Question though....WHAT IS THAT wood cabinet against the brick wall? I NEED IT. Seriously. :)
I went though all the living room designs and LOVE yours the best. It is so me and I could have all sent here and be happy with this in my living room. I voted!
How beautiful! I voted for your design. Can we rent your room?!!! Rejoice always!
This room is perfection. You are so talented. I think the flowers are spider mums. They last a long time, too. Another for the win column, I'm sure!
Your room is definitely my favorite - so warm and inviting.
Love your room & style! La-Z-Boy sure has come along way over the years!
Omigosh - there is nothing I don't love about this room. Come & do my house now!!! Sigh. I want to throw everything out and start over now...
You really rocked your room , Rock Star!! Love love love it!!
I LOVE YOUR ROOM! Everything about it is perfect! HELP! I went to the link to "view and vote" but it just kept taking me back to the home screen. I even tried viewing the "Rules", and they showed for a second but then went write back to the first page. Any suggestions? I cannot wait to vote! Hugs, Zolane
Oh Honey, you know you have ole Scat's vote. xox
The room really is perfection with those gorgeous details and textures! -Shelley
I thought you were teasing us again by showing us your amazing room, but, to know that we could win it....well, that's a whole other story!
Love, love, love your room. It is so me. I actually viewed every room and yours is my absolute favorite. I voted! And intend to vote every day. You go girl! You're rockin' it.
Can we win if we live in Canada? Your room is incredible!! How do you do it? I love everything about it! You for sure have my vote!
Wow!! Amazing. And in only 48 hours!!?? Another Canadian fan voting for your room, $10,000 or not! You seriously did your job though. I had no idea Lazy Boy showrooms had so much variety. Will be looking for one in my area!
Sorry , should have read everything before I commented.... Yes we can win if in Canada!, also, it was so cool to see you on the video.... and hear the voice behind this funny and entertaining and wonderful blog! You got this girl! That must have been so much fun! Did they just have a room loaded with accessories and such? Where did all the great items come from? Or do you just have a magic awesome decorator wand?!
Dawna, They let us shop the showroom and pick everything out! Everything in the room came from La-z-boy! Happy day! karianne
I'm rooting for you! I love what you did with this room and everything you picked out. I'll share it on my facebook page :)
This room is perfection my friend! And you look and sound so professional...you should get your own gig out of this! I voted and shared this on my FB page....if I win will you come decorate for me?!
I went through all the rooms and yours was the one I think I would most like to live in. Some of the others were very pretty and fun, but I would grow tired of them quickly. I just need a different sofa preferably leather with my dogs. I know Lazy Boy has beautiful leather sofas so I'm safe. I loves the storage piece on the brick wall, I saw another room also used it.
It was very surprising that La-Z-Boy had all those furniture pieces....who would've thought? But, what is not surprising is your talent! You rocked it girl! ;)
Yours rocks!! Voted. GL!!
Your room is definitely my favorite of all the ones I have seen. Very well done! I was going to vote, but I am not on FB, so I am not sure how to do it.
Hello KariAnne, You did an outstanding job on getting that "farmhouse" look in your room. Since this is the look in my home...you must know that I LOVE it! Great sofa...wonderful coffee table..."cool" looking bookcase and some awesome accents=one charming room. Off to vote! Blessings, Linda
I choose you! Your choices were not only beautiful, but comfortable and relevant to everyday living! I'm packing my bags now :)
I narrowed it down to three I really liked. But if I had to pick just one, and apparently I do, I would pick the one I could see my family living in that is also my style. Sooooo...... Come. Decorate. My. Family. Room. Without the mossy balls though.
Someday, before I die, I WILL have a houndstooth chair and a flower-encrusted ottoman. You heard it here first, folks . . . :) KariAnne, you HAVE to win this contest. Loved, Loved, LOVED your room! I can only imagine how much fun you had - I've always said if I were to be trapped overnight in a building, it wouldn't be a library - it would be a FURNITURE STORE!
Formidable competition, but you blew them away with your heart of the room brick wall. Every detail of that hearth warm room screams-CHAMPION! Congrats. La Verne@hopeandsalvage.com
Really well done! It must have been soooo much fun!
The hands down winner in my book! Cozy, stylish, inviting, fun.......! You are one talented lady.
This room looks amazing! I especially love the piece that has the letters of the alphabet on it. Where did you find it? Great job!
How is it that you even manage to top yourself! You did a fabulous job! And so true to your "style".
Gorgeous KariAnne! voted for ya.
Amazing! the best by far...happy to vote for you!
this room makes my heart beat just a little faster. love.
I love everything about your room KariAnne, but I'm totally crushin' on that alphabet, file, console, whatever-it-is piece.
Stunning room KariAnne! Laz-y-Boy has come a long way from the old recliners....Can you advise the style and colour of the leather chair?
Love this room! The houndstooth chair would be perfect for this Alabama girl's den. And I have zeroed in on that console with the alphabet on the drawers. I do lots of needlework and love recreating old samplers which always have the alphabet on them it seems. So that would be right up my alley! Good luck!
What an amazing room! I love all the metal aceents. Please move it to my apartment right now!
Amazing KariAnne! I too am totally crushing on the alphabet cabinet. You got my vote!
What a great looking room..You did a fantastic job Karianne and I'll bet you had tons of fun doing it..I sure would have..I have a twin Lazy-boy sleeper that I could use as a focus piece :)..I'd vote for you any day..We have very like tastes..You just do more with it..
This is my style spot on!!! We'll be moving into a new home (from an apartment) this coming spring...and I've clipped this post for my future inspiration. Thanks for sharing!
Ha, was there a competition, because your room is the shining star. xo Laura
Beautiful job! The brick wall is genius and I love the metal orb theme you repeated through the room. The 3 hanging from ceiling are my favorite ! To accomplish this in 48 hours is fantastic!
I voted! I had to reactivate my FB account that I closed last year but it was worth it so I could win the $10,000!! Oh,uh, what I meant to say was so, I could VOTE for you and YOUR ROOM and see you WIN!! Seriously, KariAnn, there doesn't seem to be too much competition. I don't mean to sound mean to the other very talented people who tried to do as good as you but couldn't. It's just that, well, your room is absolutely the best of all the rooms. Even if we weren't the best blog friends who have never even met but drink coffee and hot tea and eat stuff other people bake while you write your blog and I read your blog and of course imagine we go in and out each other's back doors because that's what best friends do, I would have voted for your room...even if. I will still say GOOD LUCK!! I hope I..er..I hope YOU WIN! ;0) Sorry. My finger keeps slipping on that I key.
I voted! Love the room...everything is warm, cozy and stylish!
Your room looks gorgeous! The best one of the bunch! I would give you my vote, but I'm Canadian, so I can't:(
Everything is beautiful in your room.
Be still my houndstooth loving heart! Fantastic job, Ms KariAnn (but we knew it'd be fantastic because, well, it's YOU!)
Love your room! It was the absolute best. I voted for and shared it!
HI, KariAnne, I sooo loved your room. And viewed the other rooms on the Lazyboy site. Would love to vote for this funky, comfy, industrial sweet room, but I am not on Facebook. Is there ANOTHER way please. Happy to vote, and will spread the word. Thanks
The room is beautiful...I love LOVE the industrial things you found, awesome!!!! Wondered if there is another way to vote besides facebook, I DON'T do facebook! Thank you in advance!
Of course your room was fabulous! And of course I voted for you! I was fair and checked out the other rooms, but with that houndstooth chair combined with the cherry on top ottoman how could I not vote for your fun/funky/farmhouse room?!?!
I could pick out which room you did WITHOUT it being identified. Looks good Ms. KW.
This is the room I could see myself actually living in, not just admiring in a photo. While absolutely gorgeous, it is so comfy and welcoming.
Beautiful room.... You've got my vote!!
Absolutely love your room. It is warm and inviting. Like how you showed each step. You have my vote!
I have been reading your blog for a while and love your style. I totally voted for you - best one there! It is the most live-able and the one I would want.
Girl you rock! Absolutely love the styling you did in this room! The first photo drew me in. It's extremely interesting with all the little details, the layering and the texture. I love that most of room is neutral with just a pop of color. I'm finding myself drawn more and more to browns, beige and rustic woods with a bit of leather. I'm casting my vote along with all the other thousands of people.
You did such a wonderful job on this beautiful farmhouse glam room! I love the neutrals with the touches of green, and the pop of orange just makes everything stand out. Would love to win this giveaway!
Karianne, Wish you could come to my house. OMG your room is just beautiful. You got my vote!!
I love this! Congrats. You did an amazing job, everyone did a great job but this room is my favorite. My favorite part are those metal orbs hanging in the middle of the room. Guessing those are from Lazy Boy too?
Your talent constantly takes my breathe away! I want us to hang out, and talk, and laugh and plan rooms! Of course, I voted for you and your boundless ideas and talent!!
Love your room and your blog... Okay, when I win the $10,000 will you come to my house and give me a personal decorating consultation? I'll be happy to fly you to Florida for it!
Absolute perfection... voted for yours! I'd love to know how the brick wall was added. Is it a faux panel or just paint or...?
Absolutely gorgeous! VOTED! Your room is most definitely the best, no questions asked. :)
Wow, I love your transformation. My favorite has to be the coffee table, although I love all of the decorative accessories also. Great job!
I went in looking and told myself I'm voting for my favorite no matter who it is. Ha. I voted for YOU! Great job. You sold me with the industrial feel. Fabulous job.
Fabulous! Love the room! Are the spheres hanging in the middle of the room made of chicken wire? The white flowers in your picture are Spider Mums and the greenery looks like a type of Eucalyptus. You did a great job. I live in Conover North Carolina. :)
OMG magnificent!! I'm in love with every detail of your room from studded couch to burlap storage box ~ and everything in between! So cool to see you in action, too. Voted and shared, GOOD LOCK, Karianne!!
I love the industrial coffee table! Is it part of the Lazy Boy collection?
My favorite part of this room is that brick wall so I was hoping you would elaborate on that more. Please give us more details!
Rasonda, Thank you so much! The brick wall is actually just a faux wall I wheeled in from storage! Great way to add texture to a space. You could replicate something similar with drywall mud and painter's tape! karianne
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply Kari Ann! You did an awesome job on this room. The brick wall makes it so charming and cozy while still sophisticated.
Beautiful textures, warmth and inviting coziness... love it !
Just amazing.....
I love design, all aspects of it! The modern, the shabby, rustic, you name it! But this designed room is really talking to me! What a wonderful job you did and I am shocked you did not win! Thanks for giving me my basement inspiration!
I LOVE everything about the living room!
I am completely in love with this room. I have been trying to track down that coffee table! Do you know where I can get it?
