ideas for collectionsHave you ever thought of ideas for collections?

Some people collect stamps.

Some people collect insects.

Some people collect 1960’s glass decanters.

As for me, I am an avid fan of vintage silverware.

I collect it all….

….forks, spoons, soup ladles, servers, pickle forks, sugar spoons, iced tea spoons, meat forks, ice cream spoons and on and on.

Why?

I think each piece of silverware tells a story.

Stories of dinner parties and ladies in flapper outfits, tinkling bells for the next course.

Stories of dignitaries and newlyweds and special occasions.

And just like in days of old, I want my silver to tell its own stories…stories for my children and grandchildren.

And oh…..the stories my forks and spoons could tell….

….but enough about my silverware….

…..tell your spoons and forks to visit me and we’ll dish 🙂

PS  What do you collect?

PSS  Wishing you a Merry Christmas Happy New Year!

Your collection looks great against the white. Although I don't consider myself a collector, I never part with my vintage prayer plaques from the 30's, 40's and 50's, unless I give them as gifts. Hmmmm, I guess I do collect them. Most of them are made of metal, have ornate details, and have beautiful messages.

Beautiful collection! I love old silver too and have found some great pieces at thrift shops - trays, bowls, spoons - many for less than $1! They look great displayed in that white urn. thanks for linking to my decanter collection too! Kelly

I just started buying old silverware last summer at yard sales.Sometimes I get a single piece and other times a box where they have just dumped a whole drawer! I will be looking for it now every time I go! It is so cheap, people are really just giving it away! I love to clean it and look at the wonderful designs!

I totally love your collection of silver. Your kitchen and butler's pantry is so stunning that to use anything other than real silver would just be wrong! Happy New Year!

I love all of that pretty silverware! I don't have a "real" collection of anything. I just buy what I like. I have a little bit of everything I guess you could say.

I started collecting some silverware in this past year and have a hard time finding knives. Plenty of forks and spoons though. I collect ironstone, vintage roe deer antlers mounted, vintage leather bound books, some transferware and majolica.

I collect Limoges china. I'm like you, if those plates could talk! I can only imagine what they would say! I'm just starting to collect milk glass compotes and cream ware. I'm dreaming of a farmhouse; can you tell? My grandmother had a seven bedroom 1848 farmhouse that I dearly loved. It was full milk glass, cream ware and vintage silver. Thanks for the inspiration! May your new year be full of only wonderful things!

I love silver too, I have many silver platters, servers and silverware. I do not like them polished though. I kind of have several collections, white platters, buttons, quilts. It is always fun to be on the hunt for that great priced piece when out antiquing with my girlfriend.

I too love vintage silverware. But I love to collect the monogrammed pieces. I don't care what initials it is-none of them match but I like it that way.

Hi Karianne, Lovely collection of silverware... I have a few things that I collect...antiques, fabric, lamps, silver trays, just to name a few! I got bitten by the bug early on in my life... Have a very Happy New Year! All the Best, Christine

What beautiful silverware, and how fun to imagine the different hands that have lovingly polished it and used it to set a table with pride. I don't collect anything - my husband makes up for it though - trains, trains and more trains. Most are still in boxes and fill our closets and storage spaces. Cheers, and Happy 2012! Barbara

Antique-anything is lovely, and especially silverware. And so easy to display. Just plop in a pretty container and ... There you are! I actually don't collect anything. I don't go to yard sales or thrift shops. (Didn't get the gene, I guess. -grin-) Years ago, on our yearly Autumn trips to Cape Cod, I/we did scour old book stores, for books of Gladys Taber. Have all of them, other than ones on dogs/cats. It was so much fun to look for them... That in itself is a memory we both treasure. And one can take out Dear Gladys' books, at any time of year, and flip to the current Season, and read delightful words. That.... And I have gotten old Christmas books, over the years. But it's not really a 'collection.' Our next-door-son also has gathered some Christmas books, too. This Christmas I told him; "Let it be known. On my passing, all my old Christmas books go to YOU!" He liked that. "People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas." ~Unknown

It is an addiction. I have 9 lovely, old wooden boxes filled with vintage silverplate and two with the real deal. Where do you keep that many boxes? How could I possible make use of that many pieces of silver at one time? I vow to buy no more. Yet, just last month at the Canton Trades Days, another box whispered my name... I tried to turn away... It whispered again. How could I possibly leave it behind? Yes. Yes I share your habit of collecting silver. LOVE your blog. And, I would love to learn more about your house. ;) blessings ~ tanna
