I come from a big family.
Every holiday, every birthday, every celebration—we all get together.
And this Thanksgiving is no exception.
My mom’s house is the center of our get-together world and she hosts all the out-of town guests. There are three guest bedrooms in her house and I wanted to help her get one of them ready for all the holiday merrymakers about to show up on her doorstep.
I love my mother so much and she does so much for all of us.
I wanted to treat her.
I wanted to surprise her.
I wanted to get the room ready so she didn’t have to.
It all started with moving the furniture around and cleaning the space and the carpet and organizing the closet and finding a new nightstand and organizing the closet and adding lighting and new bedding and pillows and some fall accessories to warm up the space.
And when I was done?
The room looked like this.
Isn’t it cozy?
Doesn’t it look like it’s ready for guests?
Doesn’t it look like a space that you’d want to kick off your shoes and unpack your suitcase and head downstairs for a plate full of turkey?
I had been planning to help my mother for a while, so when Walmart reached out I was SO HAPPY that I had this amazing opportunity. I may have mentioned it once or twice, but you know I shop Walmart on the regular and I love their affordable decor and the quality is next level (wait until you see everything I found for Christmas). I found so many cute things for this space to make it extra cozy for guests.
Here’s what I did to get the room ready for the holidays.
1. Bedside table
I changed out the side table for this new mid-century modern side table.
The other side table was white and was a little too tall and took up too much space next to the bed. So that side table was moved into the closet and everything was rearranged so guests can use that as a mini dresser in the closet.
Now guests have a place to put their clothes along with hanging space in the closet as well.
For lighting, I added this small bedside table lamp.
The room needed a little more artwork, so I found this pear print and added next to the bed along with this beautiful fall arrangement.
2. Extra seating
This chair was already in the space, but I cozied it up with the cutest khaki and white striped throw.
It’s perfect for fall (and I thought she could add a Christmas snowflake pillow with it for December, too).
I also found this cozy (you should feel how soft it is and it’s under $10) faux fur pillow for the chair, too.
Guests can read here or relax and take a break from all the busyness downstairs.
3. Greenery
On this side of the room, there’s a china cabinet that I painted for the space and I knew I needed some height and some greenery on this side of the room to balance out the accent wall.
This 51″ tall rubber plant looks so realistic and it fills out the space in this corner.
I added the basket to the base and fluffed out the leaves.
You can see the faux rubber plant here.
4. Bedding
I refreshed the bed with new bedding.
This white corduroy bedding is SO CUTE. It’s so soft and lightweight so I added two comforters to the end of the bed in case the guests needed extra warmth on the bed. The bedding is also reversible with gray on the other side in case my mother wanted to change it up for the seasons.
I need to go back over to her house this week with some wrinkle free fabric spray to get out the wrinkles.
You can see the corduroy bedding here.
I also added some throw pillows and these new white quilted shams.
4. Accessories
Then? All that was left was to shop her house for accessories like this vintage cross stitch.
I also added a cross stitch that she had of the house I live in. She has all the houses that she’s lived in designed in cross stitch and I thought this one was perfect for the hutch in the guest room.
I added a vintage truck full of books and a game board my brother made and a mini house and this artificial pampas grass for texture.
And for a little signature—I found this thistle arrangement for the side table on the other side of the room.
I wish you could meet my mother.
She is a FORCE of nature and my best friend.
She’s wise and insightful and thoughtful and funny and full of all the advice I could ever ask for. 🙂
And I’m here for all of it.
She loves the room and I love her and I can’t wait to celebrate this holiday season together.
Everything I used to refresh my mother’s room:
- this mid-century modern side table
- this mini lamp
- this fall arrangement
- this faux fur pillow
- striped khaki throw
- faux rubber tree
- this corduroy bedding
- these white quilted shams
- this artificial pampas grass
- this thistle arrangement
- fall leaf arrangement
- round gold mirror

As the mom of an adult daughter, I love what you did for your mom! So many great ideas. And you had me at wrinkle free fabric spray. What is that and where do you get it, please?
Downy makes a great one. It’s really great for travel!
You have the 'touch'...it's a beautiful room.
Love the changes, although the original was pretty awesome too. Both links for the thistle arrangement in small vase take me to the pampas grass. Love this arrangement and would like to order. Many Thanks! Rosemary
Ohhhh, I love what you’ve done with the room! So cozy. Might you share information on the rug, too please? Thanks!
Love the room. Your enthusiasm is inspiring and contagious, now I’m thinking of refreshing one of my extra bedrooms. You have such a great way words that always leaves me smiling.
I stitched the same sampler when I was a kid just learning. It hangs in my living room. Be it ever so humble…. I love it! It was stamped cross stitch from a kit. Started it in 1968. Did about half, got bored and put it away. Pulled it out a few years later and finished it in two days.
Just beautiful. So cozy and filled with love. Kim
I always miss my Momma....but your post today made me miss her even more. So glad you could help her. Blessings to a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.
This room is so inviting and cozy, but I have to confess I adore that crusty truck. It says welcome home friends and family.
Beautifully done and so sweet to do for your Mom!! Could you share where you found the draperies? I have been looking for something like this. Thank you! I really enjoy reading your posts!😊
Your Mom is a very blessed lady. As is her daughter. 🙏 A beautiful, serene guest room for all who visit. Enjoy your Mom and family. Big Hugs,
KariAnne That just looks inviting. I am sure you mom loves it. I miss my mom so much. Some of the Cutest things. God bless you, sweet person.
I'm chuckling at the idea of guests needing extra warmth down in Texas, but I know we all acclimate to whatever climate we live in. Super cute update and I'm sure your mom loves it.
I was talking to my brother earlier today and "force of nature" is exactly how I described our mom. We lost our mom way too early (she was just 56 when she passed), and we were sharing happy memories of her during our phone call. Your post was so appropriate for me today. Wishing you and your mom a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Super fun KariAnne, I love it!
Did you already share the carpet source? If not, I'd really like to take a closer look at it. Thanks!
Could you share the carpet source? If not, I'd really like to take a closer look at it. Thanks!
Hi kariAnne You are a blessed daughter and your Mom raised a very devoted girl! Love the room! Could you tell me where you got that comforter on top of the bed that looks like a simple seersucker pattern ? Thank you so very much!
I really enjoyed reading this post KariAnne, it felt like a bit of home, even though my own mama has been gone 15 years now. What a blessing it is indeed that you could do this for your mama, and that you love each other so well. It turned out beautifully, and looks like a calm and peaceful space that anyone would enjoy!
This guest room is SO lovely and so special that you have added your loving touches to it. I'm sure your Mom is thrilled. We'd like to meet her too! Your Mom is well prepared for the holiday festivities coming next month! I just gave my friend who was visiting me her Christmas gift in person!! I felt so good to be on it this year! 😄
I know she was so pleased with what you did, it looks so pretty and cozy.
Looks great, KA!!!
I love, love, love that little truck. Everything looks so beautiful!
Love it. Love the carpet where did you find it.
Bless you, KariAnne, for redoing this Guest Bedroom for your precious Mom! As usual, you did a fabulous job! You are a wonderful daughter! Your dear Mom will just love this spare room and each time she goes in there, her heart will be so happy! You are so special -- and I thank God for you!
Your mom will love it because it's beautiful, but mostly because you took the time and effort just for her.
KariAnne, the room is so beautiful, calm and peaceful for guests. A few years ago I purchased foldable luggage racks for our guest rooms. Your mother might appreciate having one of those in her guest rooms for their suitcase. Just an idea that may be of help. I do have a question. Do you happen to have a link for the curtains and the curtain rods? I love the white sheer curtains.
Soooo lovely, KariAnne! What a nice gift for your sweet mom! 🥰
The corduroy bedding looks yummy!! xoxo
