Easy Grape Jelly recipe

I remember when we planned the jump from the city to the country and I spent hours with my friends talking about the future….

…waxing poetic on country life.

I couldn’t wait to have a little house on a prairie.

I told everyone I was going to grind my own wheat and grow cucumbers and tomatoes and squash and bake with fresh herbs and raise horses and have chickens and farm fresh eggs and can my own preserves.

And nine years later?

One out of eight isn’t bad.

grape jelly with bagels

This week the twins and I made jelly.

I literally cannot believe I typed a sentence.

And the best part?

IT WAS SO EASY.

And really, really yummy.

easy grape jelly recipe

We made eleven of the prettiest jelly jars you have ever seen because we were planning on eating one or two and giving the rest away as gifts.

At least that was the plan….

….until my family tried the jelly on biscuits.

Now we are regifting the jelly to ourselves.

Want to regift some jelly, too?

Here’s the recipe we used to make it.

ingredients

Easy Grape Jelly

Ingredients

3 cups bottled grape juice, unsweetened (make sure it says 100% grape juice on the bottle)

1 package powdered pectin

4 1/2 cups sugar

pot with jelly

Combine grape juice and powdered pectin in a large saucepan.

Bring to a boil over high heat.

Add sugar, stirring until dissolved.

Return to a boil.

Boil hard for one minute.

Remove from heat.  Skim foam if necessary.

canning jars

pouring jelly

Ladle hot jelly into jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace.

Wipe jar rims.

Adjust two-piece caps.

canner

canning process

Process 10 minutes in boiling-water canner.

Yield:  about 5 pint jars (or ours made 11 of the smaller 4 oz jelly jars)

how to make grape jelly

It was amazing that grape juice and sugar and pectin went in.

And this came out.

It was one of the proudest moments of my life putting that freshly-canned jar of jelly on the table.

Now that I’m an official canner….

…maybe I should think about those chickens. 🙂

Oh Grape jelly is one of my favorites! I have fond memories of my grandmother canning everything they grew and lots of different jellies. I have to admit I have never canned anything, but this looks easy enough to try. Thanks for sharing a little "country" with us today. One out of eight isn't bad. I could be worse.:)

  2. Image for Veronica R Veronica R

Fall is my favorite season because everything gets dressed up in the prettiest boldest color. The trees, the house and my family in flannels, boots and vests. Gorgeous everywhere you look!

    1. Image for Deb Wostmann Deb Wostmann

I love everything fall - the color of the leaves, crisp cooler days, pumpkins, football, family coming for visits, and just the sense of serenity it gives me.

  3. Image for Jennifer Jennifer

Oooooh yummy!!! Now that you have tackled jelly, try applesauce! It is so easy!! Plus it makes your house smell amazing!

  4. Image for Cecilia Cecilia

Only one thing about Fall that I like? Crisp nights! (But I like so much more...like everything about Fall!) I remember my mom making grape jelly. It was so good! I just might have to make some! Have a great day! Hugs, Cecilia

  5. Image for Marilyn Thore Marilyn Thore

I love attending the fall Amish Auction near us - pumpkins, homemade pies, farm animals, farm equipment, home goods, and best of all the most fantastic freshly made warm donuts & chicken on the grill that I have ever eaten.

  6. Image for Susan Susan

My favorite thing about fall is the smell. The additional moisture that fall brings sinks into the earth and makes the soil, fall leaves, and late harvests smell so good. And it smells clean, like mother earth is getting ready to cover up with her white blanket and go to bed.

  7. Image for Edwina Edwina

Fall is my favorite season-I love the crisp cool air, beautiful, natural things to use for decorating (pumpkins, bittersweet, Indian corn.....), and using fresh pumpkin in so many recipes! Sigh. Thanks for the inspiration and the giveaway!

  8. Image for Jenn Jenn

There are so many great things about fall but homemade soups, wearing knee high boots and football season are some of my favorites!

  9. Image for Angela McAlister Angela McAlister

My absolute favorite fall activity is searching for the perfect cerulean autumn sky framed against a rich tapestry of fall foliage.

  10. Image for Nancie Nancie

I love everything about Fall. Cooler temps. & lower humidity! ( I live in Florida). Preserving vegetables, fruits & jelly for the winter months. Baking fall recipes especially everything Pumpkin. Family coming to visit for the holidays, and burning my most favorite Yankee Candle "Autumn Leaves"!

  11. Image for Donnamae Donnamae

Well...there's the air...it seems fresher! Then there's pumpkins, those colorful leaves, cool weather food (yes, food has seasons in my book). ...and finally football! ;)

  12. Image for Patricia Patricia

Fall ... getting to wear my new ankle boots! Right now it's sandals all the time. The jelly looks yummy. Can you do this with other 100% fruit juices like apple or pineapple? Anybody know the answer? If yes, I could go into the homemade jelly business ... or at least make them for everyone's Christmas baskets.

  13. Image for Carol Neibling Carol Neibling

Now when you have grown the grapes, picked the grapes, pulled of the stems, washed them well (they can have bugs) put water on them, cook them, strain them and squeeze all the juice out (Put the grapes in a leftover piece of fabric because it will be stained, measure juice and sugar and proceed as instructed. It will be different in flavored from the bottled juice, but all is good and you ha the joy of working with the girls and making memories. I have canned for almost 60 years and we enjoyed real food for the winter. You are one busy, wonderful wife and mother. I had my big toe fixed yesterday. So I am supposed to find some sit down projects.

  14. Image for Brocanteuserose Brocanteuserose

My favorite thing about fall is the lack of humidity! No more humidity means my hair goes from it's exciting and dare I say imaginative summer style of "I've been licking an electric socket, soaked in crack cocaine, al la the 80's". To the more refined and elegant style of the 80's of yore, where my hair is only sticking out 3' in every direction from my head. :)

  15. Image for Connie Lynn Connie Lynn

PUMPKINS! I love them! I can't help myself, I love pumpkins! Round ones, short ones, tall ones, skinny ones, fat smushed ones, tiny itty bitty ones, GIANT ones, ones with warts, ones without warts, green, orange, white, striped or not! Whew.... I love pumpkins!

  16. Image for debra debra

Fall is my favorite season. It gets cooler and I can pull out my sweaters and boots, then there's football! Fall is family, nesting, and snuggling with a good book. Seems a slower pace of life from the busy summer.

  17. Image for Jere Wineman Jere Wineman

I love Mother Natures talent of changing the colors of the trees and landscapes. PS. just curious which survived the list of 8 country tasks? Jere

  18. Image for Julie Ann Coleman Julie Ann Coleman

My favorite thing about fall are all the pumpkins! I grow them every year and watch as all the varies varieties take different shapes and sizes. They must grow 2 inches a day !!! So fun to watch!

  19. Image for Michelle Michelle

I love so many things about Fall, it's hard to pick just one! But I suppose it would have to be a tie between two: (1)the anticipation pumpkin pie, with real whipped cream and a drizzle of honey, and (2) watching the trees turn. And the jelly looks scrumptious, Karianne!

  20. Image for Beth Beard Beth Beard

I love everything about Fall; cooler temperatures, the gorgeous foliage, baking and the wonderful aromas and now I can add making jelly to the list. Im also looking forward to seeing what you have planned at Thistlewood Farms. I know it will be spectacular!

  21. Image for Robin Robin

I love the cool crisp air in the fall, apple picking, a cozy blanket in the evening and a fire inside or outside. Then I want the seasons to stop and never have winter or snow! Ha ha

  22. Image for Rowena Philbeck Rowena Philbeck

Cooler temperatures and making chili and all the fall foods!! Pumpkin bread etc. My favorite time of the year.

  23. Image for Sandy Gooselaw Sandy Gooselaw

Trading in garden tools and sprinklers for reading by a warm, cozy crackling fire, sipping hot chocolate piled high with whipped cream, the smell of fresh falling rain as it dances on the leaves outside my window and leaf kicking walks. sigh. . .

  24. Image for Jeanne Jeanne

Fall blows in here on the intoxicating smells of roasting green chile...magical. I never thought to make jelly from store-bought juice...brilliant!! The girls will love it. Thanks and Happy Almost Fall!

  25. Image for Susan Susan

Oh, that grape jelly just looks sooooooooo delicious...no wonder you decided to "re-gift" it all to yourselves...good call...I'd do that, too! Those are the cutest jars, too! Imma make some of this grape jelly myself...it sounds easy enough for even me! haha...why can I hear Meatloaf singing, "Now don't be saaaad, cuz two outta three ain't baaaad..."? :)

    1. Image for Susan Susan

There really should be an edit button for dum-dums like me...I messed up my own joke! That should actually read: Why can I hear Meatloaf singing, "Now don't be saaaaad, cuz one outta eight ain't bad..."? haha...I'm not even sure that was funny enough to bother correcting! :)

A clambake! Setting out the bales of straw and tables. Building a fire in the pit. Stacking the steamer with corn, sweet potatoes, onions, celery, butter, clams (and secret ingredients). Starting another cauldron of hot spiced cider. Corn hole games in the yard. Scavenger hunt with the kids to the creek. Stringing the white lights from tree to tree to bedeck the yard. Checkered table cloths down. Crank the music. Names in a cookie jar for Karaoke duets. Lining up for chowder. Singing grace in rounds. Fall is living this good life.

  27. Image for Vik Vik

I love fall....harvesting my garden and eating fresh produce everyday, canning and freezing the excess produce, sunflowers, leaves, football, volleyball, hiking in cooler temperatures, and breaking out the sweaters!

  28. Image for Joyia Buckelew Joyia Buckelew

I love the cooler temps also!! One other thing is my daughter is getting married in November, so it is an exciting time at my house this year!!

  29. Image for Pamela Pamela

Fall is one of my favorite times because of cool crisp air and aroma that comes with the changing of the seasons! Your jelly looks yummy!!

  30. Image for Claudia A. Claudia A.

The question should be, "what's not to love about fall" ? Gods paintbrush of vivid colors on all the tress, cooler temps, comfort food, hay rides, corn mazes, apply cider, abundance of harvest, sweatshirts, football I could go on and on. I can only think of one thing not to like...after comes the cold long winter. PS I can deal with winter as long as we don't stay subzero for any length of time and it doesn't go on forever. Lol

  31. Image for Christi Wallander Christi Wallander

I love everything about Fall! The cooler temperatures most especially. Raking leaves, pumpkins, pumpkins and more pumpkins, hot cinnamon chocolate, apple cider, fireplace fires, smores, fall garden, chrysanthemums.

  32. Image for Robbin Robbin

My favorite thing about fall . . . wow, there are so many. I love the cooler temperatures. I love the "aroma" of fall. I love pumpkins. I'd rather decorate for fall than Christmas . . . I'm serious!!! Only thing I don't like about fall . . . the days getting shorter :(! Your blog is one of my favorites!! Blessings from Missouri!!!

  33. Image for Susan Susan

Fall is wonderful for it's lack of humidity and amazing foliage colors. Cool, crisp air and tempting smells of home cooked meals. Life seems a little more predictable and less frenetic and that is OK.

  34. Image for Kathy Kathy

I really like the colors of fall. The golds and reds make me smile. I like them in decorating and fashion but I really enjoy seeing them in nature. What a beautiful world- God created.

  35. Image for Bonnie Bonnie

Fall is my favorite season. Such a nice change to feel cool breezes after suffering through a lot of stifling hot days in Texas. KariAnne, loved this post. I can so relate to what you wrote and you made me laugh out loud!!

  36. Image for Cassandra E Cassandra E

Just one favorite thing? Oh goodness, I don't know....I love pumpkins with their squat little bodies. I love the cool in the air so I can wear my sweaters and scarves. I'd say I love the falling leaves, but I live in Northern California surrounded by ancient oaks, and they seem to shed their prickly brown leaves year round......but I do love little felted acorns with acorn tops I've gathered. I love your acorn projects, but haven't quite finessed them just right. Which is why I love your jelly recipe.....so much more approachable than growing, harvesting etc... And finally, to be honest, I visit my local Ace Hardware a lot....and linger in the canning department and wish I had it in me....maybe this is the push I needed. xoxo

  37. Image for Rebecca Rebecca

My favorite thing about fall is when the local persimmons become ripe and are made into the most delicious dessert you have ever tasted! The aroma in your kitchen when it is baking and then a dollop of whipped cream! Oh my that speaks fall in our home!

  38. Image for Laurie Laurie

I live in the desert so Fall arrives here a couple months later than most places. But for me, its the first morning I step outside to cool air instead of a hot blast.

  39. Image for Ruth Anne Ruth Anne

I always hate to see the end of summer, but I do appreciate the cooler temperatures of fall. Pumpkins and gourds are my favorite autumn things to decorate with.

  40. Image for Laurie C Laurie C

I don't know if it is because my birthday is in fall or that it is such a distinct change in seasons but I love everything that fall brings. Fall leaves, cooler days, pumpkins, family gatherings...I could go on forever!

I would love to ACE making homemade jelly with grape juice, too! My neighbor makes jam with shredded zucchini. YUM! I need help from ACE to make this a memorable summer bounty.

Crisp, cool evenings with coffee. Corn harvest. The mulberry tree's change to sunshine yellow leaves. Putting the garden to bed. But really? What is not to love about fall?

What I love about fall? The rainy Saturdays that let me sit and read a book without guilt and if it's cool enough? Sitting by the fire to read that book.

my fav thing about is escaping the humidity and heat of SO FL for our little woodsy house in NO MI where it sounds like hail as the acorns pelt our roof and I iron colorful leaves between wax paper to bring home for friends.

making jam/jelly is one of the things i love to do in the fall. the possibilities are endless, really. there's freezer jam and cooked jams and i love combining fruits to make a new taste: like bumble berry (mixed berries) or peach melba (peach and raspberries) or strawberry rhubarb...don't even get me started on pumpkin butter (MY FAVORITE!) with leftover pumpkin. yum. i'm so proud of you! step back and look at all those beautiful jars sparkling like amethysts with all that delicious jam in them. that's my second favorite part of making jam...before i've ever put it in my mouth.

  57. Image for jennifer farnes jennifer farnes

dang. i was waxing all rhapsodic about jam/jelly/butter and didn't tell you about my favorite thing about fall: FALL. i love everything about fall...the smell of the air, the mist in the mornings, the pumpkins colors everywhere, crunchy leaves underfoot, wearing sweaters, the first fire in my fireplace, warm cider, caramel apples, bringing all the beauty inside to decorate, acorns, pumpkin bars, late afternoons and early nights, HALLOWEEN and just...autumn...sigh. wish it lasted longer. i love early falls and we're having one RIGHT NOW!! goodie goodie

The colors of the leaves, the pumpkins, the scarecrows, the squash for dinner, the sweaters coming out of hibernation, I love it all and look forward to greeting fall with open arms! Good going with the grape jelly! My son has a small orchard of concord grapes in his backyard. I usually pick them all and give them away to friends, but maybe I'll try making some jelly this year.. You have given me courage!

  64. Image for Joanne B. Joanne B.

My favorite thing about the fall? Well, living in sunny hot and humid south Florida I only WISH I could say my fav thing about fall is cooler weather, but that won't happen until---like November! Yes, we live for Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner out on the lanai poolside! I do enjoy fall decorating tho and this year I will trade my orange pumpkins for white. Of course they'll be faux so they'll last in the heat! Thanks for this great giveaway!

  65. Image for Jae Jae

My favorite thing is the cooler weather. That alone gives rise to comfortably sitting on the porch, tending the yard, catching up on home repair projects, long walks, enjoying the fall fairs and farmer markets and leaf displays.....Amazing how cooler weather makes so manymactivities more enjoyavle than the 90+ degree weather we have had for far too long! -)

Grapes! My mother is a photographer, one fall she was taking our pics & my cousins on an old New Hampshire road edged by rock walls covered in grapes. While the 4 of us wetter waiting for her to take my cusins' pics we ate the grapes... If you look carefully at the photos, our teeth are tinged blue. Also, I love picking apples and make applesauce & pies! We have 3 Apple trees of 4 different varieties (one has a graft).

We are corn/grain farmers, so I guess my favorite thing about fall is the harvest. It's such a good feeling to work together as a family towards a common goal. Plus, the cool and sunny weather of autumn. So wonderful when all is all gathered in for another season.

  74. Image for Mercy Heston Mercy Heston

I LOVE how the air gets crisp and the leaves change and it's time to rake leaves so you can jump in the pile!

Fall favorite you ask? Easy!!! Thanksgiving, hands down!!! A day to take a step back and appreciate this world and all the magical wonder in it! Love, love!

  76. Image for Sara Sara

I love fall. I may be biased bc my birthday's in fall.... but I think it's just the best overall. All the things other people are saying like the colors and leaves and cooking, but also the clothes! I'm not even a fashion girl, but fall is when I feel like I can truly be my best dressed! Thanks for this post. I'm always too scared to work with pectin - I end up cooking down some berries on the stove and calling that jam. Maybe now I'll have the bravery to try jelly.

  77. Image for Brenda Haines Brenda Haines

For me, it's that first smell of fall. That crisp fresh smell on the air is all I need, I can stand outside and just breath! :) Thanks for the chance, we can really use this towards finishing our bathroom.

I love everything about fall! Where do I start? Since it's terribly humid and in the 90's right now, I'll start with cooler weather. A little nip in the air. Ahhh. And to go along with the change in the weather, a gradual change in clothing. I remember one year, in elementary school, having a new outfit -- a red plaid dress -- that just shouted fall. The changing leaves! Pure Heaven. Pumpkins! I love pumpkins. I love searching for just the right one(s) -- always more than one -- for my front steps. Although illegal now, I remember the wonderful smell of burning leaves from my childhood. Always miss that. Did I mention that fall is my favorite season?!

  83. Image for Kathleen Kathleen

When I was younger, the new school year didn't start until after the first of September, and Fall was just around the corner ~ sort of, that is, since we're in Texas! So it's always represented a "beginning" for me, and I love many things about it ... Gorgeous warm colors, turning/falling leaves, slightly cooler air, pumpkins, wonderful Holidays looming ahead ... and the best thing: clothes that cover a little more of me! (I'm not a large person at all, but things do succumb to "gravity" more and more as the years pass!) Love the happy thoughts you prompt with your "questions" ... !!! Smiles, kj

  84. Image for Cindy A. Cindy A.

I love the changing leaves, cooler weather, pumpkin cornbread, Halloween, watching scary movies during the entire month of October, wearing my favorite boots again... the list goes on. ;)
