This is the duvet cover in the upstairs guest room.

I love duvet covers. I’ve even made them out of sheets.

I loved them when I saw one long ago on an episode on HGTV where they featured a duvet cover on a bed and I thought to myself that it was genius and I wondered how you say duvet…..

….and where in the world can I get one?

It was right about the time I discovered sisal rugs.

Good times.

The challenge?

The problem?

Have you ever tried to put on one before?

You turn it inside out and try to find the corners and then the other corner gets lost somewhere inside the duvet cover and you start sweating and just when you think you have it all together and you finally have the insert in the right place and you go to fluff it….

….and discover that half of the insert is bunched up and looks like a camel.

Can I get an amen?

yellow-bedding_thumb.jpgAnd then the other day on facebook I saw a new way to put on a duvet cover.

They just rolled it up.

And it took about five minutes.

No lost corners.

No sweating.

No camel-looking insert.

I thought it was too good to be true (like a lot of things on social media) so I tried it.  And it worked like a charm.  Easy peasy.  So simple.

So I’m paying the tip forward to all of you with the best tip for putting on a duvet cover.

You got this. 🙂

how to put on a duvet cover

1.  Start with your duvet cover.

Turn it inside out.

You want it to be as smoothed out and even on both sides as possible.

Make sure that the opening to the duvet cover is on the opposite side from you.

For example, in this picture it’s at the top of the screen.

2.  Place your insert on top of the turned inside out duvet cover

Again, straighten it out and make it as even as possible.

If you have ties…tie the corners of the duvet cover onto the insert.

If not, they sell these fun clips that you can clip the corners of the duvet cover to your insert.

3.  Start rolling the duvet cover and insert

Begin with the side opposite the opening and just roll up the cover like a jelly roll.

Take your time.

Make it as even and straight as possible.

Roll it all the way up until you reach the opening.

4.  Tuck in the ends of the duvet cover

This is the part that sounds so hard…but it will make total sense to you when you get to this step.

You have your finished roll.  It’s rolled all the way up to the opening.  The opening doesn’t extend all the way to the corners. Take the roll and stuff it inside those corners.

I tried to take a picture of it so it made sense.

Repeat this for both sides.

Then…’s the amazing part.

Are you ready?

You just unroll it back and the duvet cover rolls right out on the right side.

5.  Fluff the duvet cover

After you finish rolling it….you will want to give it a good fluff to make sure everything settles into place.

When you are done….it looks like this.

Now…you will probably want to just add the insert on the bed.  I just took these pictures of rolling it on the floor so you could see how it works.

And here’s a Reader’s Digest Version for you.

Just to make you smile.

Happy duvet tip day. 🙂

Hi Kari Ann. I love your blog and never miss reading any of your posts because for some reason the way you write is a touchstone for me. Thank you for being there for us! I love this room that you have created for your guests, and was wondering if you could tell me where you got your beautiful linens? I especially love the yellow and white, but the blues are beautiful too! Thanks for any info you can give me, and for the great tip. Have a great day!

What? No more fighting your way out of the duvet cover when you've put YOURSELF into it to straighten the corners? ;) LOLOL!! Love it!!

  11. Image for Yolanda Yolanda

Oh my god!!! I cannot believe how simple it seems. Tomorrow I have to change them, so I will try it for sure KariAnne. We have duvets on all beds in winter, and for children single beds it is not so complicated to insert in, but for our double bed is really a pain having to put duvet cover..... Thanks a lot for making us life easier, ROCK STAR!!!!!!!

The first time I ever put on a duvet cover, I seriously broke out in a sweat! It's funny, because I recently splurged on a Pottery Barn duvet and used this very method last week. Works like a charm, and it was literally, no sweat!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I got so frustrated with my duvet-putting-on that I gave up and just laid it over the top! Thanks to this tip I now have a smooth COVERED duvet!

  14. Image for Kathy Kathy

Thank you so much! I don't use my duvet covers because they drive me crazy. I can't get it right. I have to try the clips. Sounds like this will help me. Thanks!! Kathy

I genuflect at your greatness -- it does seem easy. Now I'm off to buy a duvet and cover. Oh!! I'm kinda a slow learner so I packed a few things in my suitcase and I'm coming over for some personal instructions. It looks like the guest room is empty and I promise I'll be as quiet as a mouse. :-)

Thank you so much for this wonderful tip. I am also happy to learn from the comments to use two inserts. I have never liked duvets because they are always so messy looking but think that using two would give me the look I would like. How did we EVER get along without the Internet and blogs before???!!!!

  17. Image for Sandy R Sandy R

KariAnne, I've ALWAYS hated duvet covers, because the insert NEVER went in correctly! this is an AWESOME way to make sure it's done correctly and easily each time! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!

  18. Image for vicki vicki

I too saw this facebook post but it looked more complicated than the old way. But I trust you so I will give it a try! And YES two comforters in one cover is amazingly fluffy and warm. I will have to look for the clips to keep everything together. Thanks!

  19. Image for Tammy Tammy

Thank you so much for the fabulous tip!! Have been struggling with this for years! I have duvets for every season,so this will make it so much easier for me!!! I love changing out my bedroom for a new look. Will be trying this soon! Your amazing!

  20. Image for Heather Heather

This is brilliant! It's been so cold here the past 2 weeks we have really been enjoying our duvets for their coziness! Now I know how to get them in their covers lickity split!! Thanks for the tip!!

  21. Image for De De

Oh my goodness, you just don't know how much I appreciate finding this post! I have a king-size down comforter and it takes me SO long to wrestle that thing into it's duvet! I actually can't wait for laundry-day this week so I can give this a try. :) I'm also going to add some little ties at the corners - great idea! Thanks!

OMG: I just had help putting my duvet in about 3 days ago because I used to crawl inside to get the corners where they need to go. Am also adding ties the next time I take the cover off; makes it really stay in place. Thank you for sharing the tip and am "flagging" it so I can find it the next time. WOW! I have learned so much from blogs, including yours and am ever grateful! Thank you! {{HUGS}} Joy at
