Can I let y’all in on a little secret?
I’ve been counting down the days to today.
The day the universe rejoices and the skies shower sunshine and the celebration begins and brilliant vivid hues burst forth in glorious song and color reigns supreme.
Today is the day to announce the Sherwin-Williams® 2021 Color of the Year. It’s one of my favorite days of the year. I never miss a color of the year announcement or chance to makeover a room.
Like this one.
And the best part?
I made over an entire bedroom inspired by the 2021 Color of the Year with an amazing new wall treatment and the prettiest rug and a story.
An exciting page-turner of a tale.
Because just between us? Every really good before and after begins with the chapters of a story.
Let’s start at the very beginning with the before.
This is a bedroom at my mother’s house. It’s tucked upstairs at the end of the hallway for the occasional guest. This is actually where we stayed when we renovated our current house.
My mother lives alone since my father passed away. With everything going on and all the challenges over the past couple of months, she’s been a little sad.
A little nervous.
A little overwhelmed.
I wanted to brighten her day. I wanted to treat her and make her feel special. I wanted her to have a room she could escape to. A place that was warm and welcoming and full of all the things and colors that she loved.
The challenge with this room? As you can see in the before pictures, it has a sloped ceiling and shorter walls. She also sustained some water damage from all the recent storms. Our goal was to fix the water damage and create an accent wall that incorporated the slanted ceiling and turned it into an advantage rather than an obstacle.
We started by fixing the water damage in the room and creating this accent wall with molding, incorporating the slanted ceiling as part of the design.
I’m going to show you how we created this wall in another post, but it’s super easy and only took about an afternoon to construct.
(The hardest part is figuring out the math on the project).
We primed everything first.
And painted the rest of the room Shoji White SW 7042.
We were ready for a little color. But not just any color. A color that brought a little of the outside in and created a warm and inviting place that my mother could relax in and feel secure.
This amazing color?
It’s the Sherwin-Williams® 2021 Color of the Year:
Look at that richness.
Look at the depth of the color.
Look at how AMAZING it’s going to look on this accent wall.
Are you ready for a little before and after?
Here’s the before.
This, my wonderful, amazing, incredible friends.
THIS IS THE AFTER.
Please scroll up and look at the before one more time.
Look at this.
My mother almost started crying when she saw it.
I told her about the room and I told her about the plans, and she told me she knew that she would like it.
But she had no idea how much she would LOVE IT.
Here’s a close-up of the color on the walls.
The panels just bring a texture to the space that was lacking before.
We brought in new thrifted furniture, too.
Like this end table that we got for $5 and painted Shoji White SW 7042.
Or this thrifted hutch that we bought for under $100 and painted it with Gateway Gray SW 7644.
I kept the original chair from this side of the room with its matching ottoman, layered in a pom pom throw and neutral pillow and added a poem from my father to my mother framed on the wall.
One of my favorite things about this room is the new chandelier.
We took down the original fixture and replaced it with this beaded chandelier.
Because the molding is wrapped up to the ceiling, it’s the perfect frame for the new light fixture in the space.
It was the bed’s turn.
I added a duvet covered with crisp white color and layers of pillows and textures on the bed.
My mother’s favorite thing?
The new throw that she could use on the bed or even sitting on the chair.
To think this room all started with a little inspiration and the Sherwin-Williams® 2021 Color of the Year: Urbane Bronze SW 7048.
It makes me so happy to see my mother so happy.
It makes me so glad to see her feel safe and secure and a little less nervous and overwhelmed.
The room has an incredible story.
And the best part?
There are so many chapters left to write.
I see a sequel coming. 🙂
