Looking for simple ideas on how to style a bedroom on a budget? Here’s a fun bedroom makeover before and after with tons of ideas and inspiration.

Bedroom Makeover Before and After

Remember when I showed you this bedroom?

This is the room I grew up in.

This is the bedroom where I studied for geometry and English and history and chemistry. It’s where I put my Merle Norman pancake make-up on in front of a fan in the middle of summer because we didn’t have central heat or air and hot glued plaid bows onto the front of my blue sweater vest to wear on a first date with the cutest boy and his brown twinkling eyes.

It didn’t look like this when I lived here.

It had Laura Ashley wallpaper covering the walls and coordinating Laura Ashley bedding in the reverse pattern and a matching lampshade and a giant bulletin board with my entire high school life pinned to it along with a couple of dried up homecoming mums.

But life happens.

Rooms change.

And somewhere along the way, the new owners removed the wallpaper to reveal the original shiplap beneath it and stained the shiplap in stripes. When we bought back the house the first thing we did was paint the walls white and add a little farmhouse back into the space.

And now?

We just updated it again with some new furniture pieces and new bedding and I thought it might be fun to show you what a little shopping at Walmart with Better Homes and Gardens can do.

Are you ready?

Want to see this bedroom makeover before and after?

Let’s go.

bedroom makeover before and after on a budget

Bedroom Makeover Before and After

You saw where we started.

And now?

Here’s the bedroom.

Isn’t it so calm and peaceful and simple?

And the star of the show?

Bedroom Makeover Before and After

Budget bedding options

THIS BEDDING.

Y’all.

Y’ALL.

If you are looking for a little refresh for spring? This is the BEDDING FOR YOU. This chenille comforter and sham set is only $54 dollars at Walmart.

Yes. $54. And it looks SUPER high end.

Can you even?

Bedroom Makeover Before and After

Bedroom Makeover Before and After rug

We got it in the full/queen size, but it’s available in a king.

It comes with this comforter with a tufted back and two standard shams.

I also have this comforter on order to layer in and it was only $34.99.

Bedroom Makeover Before and After desk

Budget storage options

To add a little more storage to this side of the room, I added this six storage cubby.

It’s SUPER affordable at Walmart for only $88 and it comes in eight different finishes.

You can see it here.

It also comes in a six cubby option and a four cubby option.

Bedroom Makeover Before and After brass handle

My favorite thing about the unit?

You have an entire selection of these storage bins.

The ones I chose have the cutest gold handles.

You can see them here.

I also loved this option and this option, too.

This brass sphere was super affordable and I added it to the shelves to bring in the gold of the handles.

Budget lighting options

On the desk area, I found this pineapple lamp for under $25 with the shade.

It’s so cute and adds a little homework light to this side of the room.

I found mine in the store, but they have tons of other cute options online.

You can see them here.

budget accessory options

And beside the bed I added this gold candle holder.

It’s supposed to be used for candles, but it makes the cutest organizer.

She’s going to use it to hold her rings and jewelry.

You can see it here.

I was also thinking about getting this organizer for her desk, too.

a little handmade for a bedroom makeover before and after

And then?

Because every bedroom makeover before and after needs a little handmade?

I added this artwork made by her aunt.

This bedroom might not have Laura Ashley wallpaper anymore.

But it’s still ready for late-night high school gossip and contouring make-up and geometry and physics and English and history.

And the best part?

On the other side of the room next to the door, there’s a bulletin board covered with all the high school things pinned from the last two years.

Even a mum or two. 🙂

I bought this same storage unit for my daughter's basement...for all the little boy things. She loves it and is considering a second one! Also, bought two of these for the church nursery. I got it at Sam's Club so it's different..but the same. It looks so upscale and they are all very sturdy! Love the room!

So refreshing! It's the perfect girlie space! I love the little touches of texture and fun. Those basket handles in the cubbies look just like smilie faces! What a happy space. 😁 PS: where did you purchase this rug? I'm looking for a natural fiber rug, but a bit more creamy maybe. It's hard to tell the true color on my phone. Thanks, friend!

Okay how did I not catch on until now that you're living in the house you grew up in?! That is amazing! And I bet it's such a unique experience for you to be raising your own family there now! This room is beautiful, and I love those white ship lap walls! Great choice! Paige https://thehappyflammily.com

Everything you do is lovely! I just moved from Oregon to Texas (FtWorth area) and am waiting for the home I’m buying to close so I can begin decorating. I love getting new ideas, and you have some great ones! I would also like to know where to find a rug like the one shown in your bedroom. I love the look, but am not familiar with everything here yet!

This is really pretty. We had bedspreads like that in the house in which I grew up. You say "she will do" whatever in the room, but I can't find who the room is for - one of your daughters? Whomever it is will love it. I want to know how you had wallpaper on shiplap - did the previous owner remove sheetrock or plaster first? At any rate, it's much improved.

There is NOTHING better than chenille bedding. Here in Massachusetts it’s my summer bedding. I’ve collected vintage chenille for all of the beds here. It’s cozy on a cool night and light on warmer days. Perfect choice and extremely user friendly, just wash and dry! Love the new room update!

Love it!!! Especially that comfortor . . . pure sentimental retro!! My grandmother always had chenille bedspreads - actually, the first bedspread I remember on my own bed sported a chenille ballerina!! :) Beautiful, just like its decorator!

I'm sure your wallpaper was pretty and I love the pretty room you just madeover for one of your daughters. It looks amazing and so perfect for a pretty and sweet high school girl.

Love the transformation! I’m redoing our guest room for our granddaughter. She’s 5 but I want to make it a room she can grow into. I love the paint color, what is it? It’s clean and fresh. The room is on the small side, so I think keeping it simple will make it feel larger.

The room is lovely. I’m curious where to find the pink throw. I love the color. Was it mentioned if so I missed it. Thank you!

Whew, what a relief--I also saw the smiles on the handles of the storage unit and thought you'd think I was crazy if I told you that! But I'm not the only one! It's a gorgeous girl's bedroom (although I kinda liked the blue stripes if it were intended for a coastal cottage .... ) and am curious about where the headboard came from.

Karianne, so what's going on? This looks like a re-post of an older share, never a bad idea, but? Always love all your ideas, since I missed your posts at your Kentucky home.

Once again, beautiful. Thirty seconds after I clicked the WalMart link for the bedspread......sold out. Everything looks so welcoming. Well done.

So if my memory serves me this was your son’s room. Has he moved out completely? What did you do with that large shelving unit that was on one wall.? I believe it had held bolts of fabric in its previous life. Love all you do.

This room is just beautiful and truly fit for your "princess" who I know just loves it and everything her dear Mom has done for her! The bedspread is so nice. The pineapple lamp is so cute, too. Those storage units just fit in so nicely, too. KariAnne, you always do such a lovely job with your decorating. Bless you! Thanks for always sharing your gorgeous home with us.

It's SO, SO pretty!! I wish the chenille comforter came in white. It looks white in your pics but it's ivory on the website. xoxo
