As part of the #Choiceisyours contest….Tempur Pedic asked me to put together my own #Choiceisyours Pinterest board full of bedroom decorating ideas and inspiration that represented both my design style…..
…..and my husband’s.
I was excited.
And thrilled.
And overjoyed…..until.
Until…..I realized I had absolutely no idea what my husband’s design style was.
I’ve never asked him.
{gulp}
Ever….in the history of ever.
So I embarked on a quest to find out…..
And here’s how the conversation went:
Me: Can I ask you a quick question? What is your decorating style for decorating a bedroom?
Him: Umm…..(desperately searching for an answer)….umm…..ducks.
Yep. Umm…..I like ducks. Wallpaper borders with ducks on them.
Me: (sighing inwardly) Okay…that sounds great…..duck wallpaper border it is. Anything else?
Him: Let me think.

Me: (trying to sound encouraging) I need a few more ideas. I’m trying to put together an inspiration board on Pinterest with things you like and I like.
Him: (warming to the subject after the encouraging words) Well…..I like functionality. You know….I like places to put things. Organizing and stuff like that. We could nail in some nails on the wall to hang things.
Nails would be perfect for organizing….and we could just nail them where ever we want.
Me: (*sigh*) Nails on the wall….check.
Duck wallpaper border…..check.
I’ll add them to the list.
Him: Was that the right answer?
Me: I love you.
The end.

You know, they do make some cool looking nails! Don't you just love them (husbands, not nails) to pieces?
rofl - My husband says functionality. I am okay with functionality as long as it looks awesome.
Your color taste is similar to mine. Love the gray and milk glass.
So funny - at least the ducks and nails show at least a little thought. My husband would just say, "Anything that doesn't cost a lot of money!"...but I know his true design style - frat house! If he lived here alone our house would resemble a frat house...and not a nice one with historical significance or architectural details! As long as he has the "stuff" he "needs" he is happy. It's a wonder how I convince him to do anything around here! -Shelley
Your hubby must be ahead of his time, I can't find any duck wallpaper anywhere. But that trend is on its way back around....I'm sure of it! ;)
My husband's design style is...wait for it...what ever I like! That's why we've been married for 39 years! You COULD make a duck design out of nails!! ;)
LOVE this bedroom! It looks so comfortable and creative. Nice job!
LOL Too funny! However...I clicked on the Pinterest pic and got a wizard site. You might want to check it. Something is attached to your image.
I read the post to my husband. We both laughed. Out loud!
I love reading the conversations between you and your hubby. So cute. Hope you had a great weekend!
This completely made e smile and laugh... duck borders.. hahaha! Just wanted you to know I am a huge fan of yours and love everything you do! I hope you are enjoying your weekend! xo
My husband would say "black lacquer tables with glass" or something similar. I was so proudly showing him my newly milk painted table complete with shabby chippiness and distressing and he looks up at me and asks "your going to sand this down and paint this, right?" Completely clueless that it was a completed project and not the start. Sigh, our tastes will never be the same but I love him anyways.
Aww, bless his little heart. ;)
This gave me a good chuckle this morning, thanks for sharing this story. It made the day, LOL!!! Cynthia
I'm so glad you clarified about his design style. Because I was drawing a blank there. In spite of the duck and nail conversation, which is completely inspiring, of course, I think his style must be "Whatever makes Karianne smile her red lipstick smile." Just say'n since it's never come up and all. He must love your sparkly lipstick candle from Haven if that's the case. The Other Marian
I felt so bad for him..you really put him on the spot .He's so used to not having to think about that stuff..loved your dialogue when he gave you answers..Too cute
Can't wait to check out your pinterest board. I'm redoing my daughter's bedroom and feeling like my bedroom could use a little sprucing up as well. Hope you are having a great holiday weekend!
I joined this a while ago. I just asked my husband what his decorating style was for a bedroom.."A bed and a dresser. That's all. And it better not be nothing fancy". LOL! At least yours has ideas!!
So funny! My husband has definite opinions and is hands on...so we have "on-going lessons in compromise" lol. It always turns out better than either of our original ideas, though!
I think you should keep your role as family decorator. And I don't see any duck borders on your inspiration page?.......:-)
Karianne, haha! I hope he didnt mean those lil yellow rubber duckies. To0o0o funny!
You are a truly brave woman asking him that. Mine would just say "I like whatever you want, honey" and then go outside as fast as his super long legs could carry him away from this most-dangerous-of-questions. LOL. And I love you are using "in the history of ever." You said you would, and you are/did/remembered. Huge hugs. Happy Labor Day.
Oh my word!! I just read your story to my husband as we were having lunch today....laughing all the while! And.....my husband said "nails on the wall....kind of a good idea, like in the garage"! I think most of we women tend to shy away from asking our husbands about their design style mainly for fear of getting the same answers you got!! Smile!!
This just reminded me that I threw away the rolls of duck border my husband bought from a clearance bin at Bass Pro Shops a few years ago! He so wanted to use it! I'm sure he's forgotten it by now! I hope!
Funny Post ! I went to view your #Choiceisyours board, and while the photos are lovely, I did not see any duck wall paper or nails in those walls. Hmmmm :-) Wonder what my husband will say when I ask him? Car parts, and rifles, I imagine.
We had a stencilled duck border in our bathroom 25 years ago!!! My husband likes darker, cocoon-like rooms. I like white, bright rooms. Total opposites, but I (nearly) always get my own way!!! :-D
Don't you have to love them, men/husbands/partners, when they have no idea and so you gain full reign on the decorating front!
That conversation sounds eerily like some I have had with Big Daddy! He gave up early in our marriage and now allows all color decisions to be made by me. We were giving our bathroom a facelift and I wanted a medium blue wall color with tan tiles, an expresso brown vanity and crisp white moldings and fixtures. He did not want the brown PERIOD. So I painted the vanity. Hated it. Painted it. Hated it. Not just me either, both of us did not like the either color of the dang thing. Third time was the charm. I decided I was just going to do it and got it done in the brown before he was up one morning. He took one look and said "Yeah..... So I now formally abdicate all color choices for the duration of our lives". He's about the most fabulous guy EVAH!!
Girl, I was CRACKING UP reading this. I think Sound Man would get along GREAT with your husband. :) Thanks for telling us about the giveaway! Off to create my board AND quiz my hubs!
Well my husband's idea of decorating is: flags, tennis rackets on the wall and his drums set up in the corner.....thank the Lord he leaves all the decorating to me for the last 37 years... Whew! Picture that decorating /inspiration board!
haha, when i asked the same question, the answer i got was "Southern" and he looked around contentedly. so i don't know what "Southern" decorating is except that this must be what we have! i'm going to try the contest but now i don't know if i can distinguish mine from his particularly. we'll see. thanks for the heads up.
I wonder if they allow people who don't have a partner (I'm single) to play in the Give a way? Nicole
I don't think I've asked my hubby either! Love your post ;) Hugs, Jamie @ somuchbetterwithage.com
How about "duck" ie duct tape & nails to organize? Did he mean mallards? oh my.... My husband's decorating style?? - that is a stumper of a question?
I just read this out loud to my husband and we both had a big belly-laugh at this. It's so us. And so, well... men in general. Good luck with the ducks and nails design theme. :)
Oh wow. My husband is right there with yours. Problem with that is he is very interested in the decor and has something to say about everything. If he doesn't like it, it doesn't happen. His favourite colour? Beige. God help me, but I love him anyway.
Bahaha! My hubby would say: deer antlers. I know antlers are so on trend, but I will not have a formerly living creature, who is now dead watching over me as I sleep. No thank you.
I told my husband he could decorate any room he wanted ...I even let him pick out the room from a basket filled with slips of paper - just to make it fair (all said garage)......he won! The garage is a true testimony to his taste.....nails and all! have a great weekend everyone! Lois
