See that space in my kitchen?
That big blank space in the middle of the floor?
There used to be a runner.
Actually, several runners have come and gone.
Being a runner in the kitchen is hard work. There’s traffic and food and drink and general mayhem. That’s a tall order for a carpet.
But then?
I had a brilliant idea (occasionally that happens).
What if I got a runner that I could wash? When the going gets tough, I could just toss it in the washer.
See? Brilliant, right?
I found several runners that I think will work and I mocked them up in the space so we could all see what they look like.
Here are 10 of the best (in my opinion) washable runners for the kitchen (and most of them are under $40, t00).

Just a couple of things to note before we get started:
- washable runners can be a little thin—so I’m using a non-skid rug pad underneath—this one is amazing
- most of the runners are under $40 (I wanted to keep it super affordable)
- all the runners come in different sizes and colors
- I’m using a 2′ x 6′ for the space, but I may go up to a 2′ x 8 ‘
- I usually measure out the space for a runner with painter’s tape on the floor so I can visualize it
1. Washable vintage blue runner
I chose the top five that I was thinking about for the kitchen and mocked them up in the space.
Starting off strong with this vintage blue runner.
I love the color and patterned details of it, and I think it looks super expensive (even though it’s under $40).
It comes in several sizes, but I think I’ll go with a 2′ x 6′ (they have tons of other sizes, too).

2. Checkered runner with border
This is the washable runner that I’m leaning toward.
Just between us? I never met a harlequin pattern that I didn’t like.
It’s giving me 1990’s vibes (which was an amazing decade for me).

3. This tapestry runner
Doesn’t this runner look like a piece of artwork?
It looks to me like a fancy tapestry from a manor in England.
This is my second choice (just look at that border). I’m worried the background is just a little too creamy for me.
It’s so inexpensive, I might order this one, too, just to see which one would work better.

4. This neutral runner
This one is for all my neutral friends.
I always get requests for neutral runners and this one has the prettiest pattern.
The colors are layered and I think there’s a slight pink undertone.

5. This blue and white runner
I fell in LOVE with this runner when I saw it.
Normally, I tend towards blue and white, but I don’t have a ton of blue and white in the kitchen (maybe I should change that).
This runner is similar to number one with more of a navy color.

6. Block print runner
Look at the scallops on this runner.
I love the subtle detailing of the block print pattern and the neutral background.
It almost reads as a neutral to me and would be so perfect in a farmhouse kitchen.

Hello beautiful.
This floral runner makes a STATEMENT.
Which you know I’m all about.
I had a similar rug once in my kitchen in Texas in the house we lived in before we moved to Kentucky and I loved it.

8. This Scalloped Laura Ashley runner
Wait until you see the price of this one.
If you look at the pattern closely, you can see that it’s layered and slightly tufted.
I was so surprised that this was washable (I checked twice to make sure) and I’m all about Laura Ashley (my bedroom growing up was covered in Laura Ashley wallpaper).

I just thought this was the sweetest rug.
It might be too much for a kitchen (or not), but it would be perfect in an entryway or hallway.
It comes in several other colors, too, if pink isn’t your situation.

And number 10 on our list is a pretty scalloped neutral.
This rug would work in any kitchen and I love the double border.

I liked a lot of these but No. 2 seems to work really well in your kitchen. Oddly enough, my kitchen runner, which is thicker than these, hasn't needed much washing. And I'm glad it doesn't scoot around or fold up like so many thin rugs do. I have three dogs and they are constantly messing up my hall runner!
They are all beautiful. I especially love the scalloped ones!

Great picks. I know you aren't asking for our votes but I think #2 - it ties in the wicker on your bar stool so well and just seems to tie the whole room together somehow. But, as always, you pick great stuff out for sure.

I like #3 because it picks up both the blues and browns in your kitchen. Really like #1 as well. Maybe you need two of them so you can swap them out every so often!
Definitely #2. It immediately tied everything together and balanced the room beautifully.

Definitely #2! Love it ❤️ I don't think you should add blue to your kitchen to use #1 - unless of course you want to 😂 It is your kitchen 🙂 I wouldn't go for florals or scallops in a kitchen - they are too "sweet" for a practical utilitarian area. Did I say I love #2?
Positively #2! #'s 1 & 5 are really pretty, but you would need to add blues in your kitchen, and your kitchen is already perfect as is. Florals and scallops do not say practical kitchen to me. Did I say I love #2?

I purchased your #7 but with black background. Was not sure because of the thinness if it would work in my hallway. I love it and have bought another one and a round one. Recommend rug tape if in higher traffic area.
My favorite is #1.
These are some beautiful runners but I think I like #10 the best. I have some blues and greens and my upper cabinets are wood. Thanks for showing these and have a great day.

They have come a long way in runners and the fact that they are washable makes them all a win!! But, to me, #1, the vintage blue runner, by far looks beautiful in your kitchen. I think if you add a pretty complementary blue and white bowl or plate, tea towel... in your kitchen, you will see it works beautifully and speaks to your dining room and other areas of your lovely home. ❤️

All the runners are lovely, but #2 is my favorite for your kitchen. I would love to have that one in a large size for my living room. We are finally getting rain today here in Upstate NY. The gardens will rejoice. Hallelujah!
