Number One Tip For Painting a Wood Sign

Number One Tip For Painting a Wood Sign

I have painted dozens of wood signs in my life.

Signs and friends of signs and entire sign families.

Small signs and big signs and grocery signs and signs that have only one powerful amazing word and signs that say I love you.

And in all my sign painting I’ve learned a few things.

Things that make sign painting a breeze.

Especially this tip.

The best tip of all.

Five Creative Chalkboard Project Ideas

Five Creative Chalkboard Project Ideas

chalkboard-labels

I vaguely remember a world before chalkboard paint.

It’s kind of hazy, but I’m pretty sure it co-incided with phones that had rotary dials and clock radios with numbers that flipped.

I can’t pin point an exact date when I discovered it, but I think it all started with this 40-pane window that we rescued from the trash and drove down the back roads to our house.

When I saw it in the trash, it called my name and told me it was a calendar in disguise.

I speak trash, so I understood perfectly.Continue reading

The Meow Heard Around the World

The Meow Heard Around the World

love you to the moon and back

When I was younger and thought about my older self, I always wondered what I’d be like and where I’d work and who my friends would be and if I would live in a mansion with gold faucets and a laundry chute from the second floor and wear leg warmers after I turned 30.

And then I would close my eyes and imagine my future family.

I hoped they’d be silly.

And crazy.

And funny.

I imagined a big, ramshackle, creative, zany family with lots and lots of kids and pets and laughter and an understanding husband….

I used to call them the twins.

At the conference they worked with me during the DIY class and helped me in the decorating session and ate ice cream with the crickets at dusk and participated in Zumba at midnight and got their nails painted five different colors and tried on earrings in the hallway and took 501 selfies at the photo booth and soon the conference attendees started calling them the mini-thistles….

….and it stuck.Continue reading

You were right.

Of course you were.

Why didn’t I listen to you earlier?  Lark Rise to Candleford is wonderful.

I’m not even through the first season, but I want to live there.  Well, I really want to live in Candleford and marry the squire.

I want to be friend with Bates….I mean Robert Timmins…..the intelligent, but somewhat opinionated and difficult stonemason.

I want to walk those back pastures and roads and wander through the English countryside and work at the post office.

Oh….and wear one of those hats.

However, I live in 2015 in the Kentucky countryside where we don’t have squires or thatched roofs or opinionated stonemasons.

But we do paint signs.

Want to make one of your own?  Here’s the DIY on how to build the frame and paint the sign.Continue reading

Have you ever gotten a song stuck in your head?

You heard it in the grocery store or on the radio or in the elevator.

And then you hear it over and over and over again.

You think it’s gone….and the next thing you know….you’re humming in line at the McDonald’s drive-through.

This is what was in my head playlist yesterday.

You’re welcome.Continue reading
