Simple Handmade Gift Idea

Simple Handmade Gift Idea

One of the things I learned in the process of writing this book is that it takes a village to make it all happen.

No author is an island.

There are editors and copy editors and a marketing team and a PR specialists and publicists and people who check to make sure you’ve turned in every last exclamation point.

It’s awe-inspiring and humbling and amazing to watch.

Especially when your village is brilliant.Continue reading

Every Table Needs a Superman

Every Table Needs a Superman

Today is all about keeping it real.

The realest of the real.

The kind of real where you don’t want to talk about real and you want to act like real doesn’t exist and you want to hide your head under the covers and talk about anything else besides real.

See this table?

This incredible, amazing, wonderful first-time table that my husband built.

See how great it looks from this angle?Continue reading

A Tour of the House for Hope

A Tour of the House for Hope

I have written 1,315 posts on this blog.

Some of them funny.

Some of them not as funny as I thought they were.

Some of them introspective.

Some of them room befores and afters and furniture makeovers and DIY projects and the occasional post about hay bales and gas station pizza in the country.

But this post?  The one you are about to read?  Of all the more than thirteen hundred posts…

….this one is the longest.

I couldn’t help it.

The house for hope turned out that amazing. 🙂Continue reading

What You Can Make With a Piece of Floor

What You Can Make With a Piece of Floor

The year for Christmas, my sister gave me a piece of ordinary.

Something everyday.

Something simple.

Something underestimated.

Something we see and overlook and walk and stomp and dance and tiptoe and tread on every single day.

A piece of floor.Continue reading

Five Last-Minute Valentine Gift Ideas

Five Last-Minute Valentine Gift Ideas

I don’t have the DIY to show you today.

I fully intended to with every single fiber of my being and the bobby pin I’m using to help grow out my bangs.

I was going to edit the photos and write out the instructions and astound and amaze you with my incredible insight into the world of do-it-yourself.

And then?

The superbowl kind of happened.

I wasn’t even going to watch it.  It was supposed to be background noise with the occasional running into the room to watch the commercials.  I don’t even have a team I’m rooting for.  I’m a Cowboys fan and we didn’t make it past the play-offs.

And besides.

I thought it was over.  I thought the Falcons had won.  Winning like hand over the ring and cue the gatorade.  Then just as I sat down to work on the post, my family called me in.  Watch this, they said.  You’re never going to believe this, they told me.

The rest is history.

If you are a Falcon’s fan, I’m sorry.  Truly.  Your team played with such heart.  If you are a Patriots’ fan, you need to send Julian Edelman a thank you note. 🙂

And for everyone else….

….here are some easy last-minute Valentine gift ideas to start the week off right.Continue reading

The Year of Handmade

The Year of Handmade

joy-handmade-gift-ideas

Twelve years ago we started with the handmade gifts.

It was born of necessity.  There were brothers and sisters and dads and moms and cousins and grandmas and nieces and nephews who gathered around the Christmas tree every year.

And none of us were millionaires.

Not even close.

It helps that we are all a little competitive, my siblings and I.  We all wanted to be the best.  We all wanted to make Santa proud.  So there were gifts of lampshades made from my father’s old slides and bowls carved from fallen trees and entire books created from old love letters and a thistle created from the first 750 words from my blog.

So today, on the last day of November with December knocking at the door, I thought I would share some of my favorite ideas for a handmade Christmas.  Some are easy.  Some are a little harder.

But all are hand-crafted.

Hand-loved.

Handmade from the heart.

DIY Wood Picture Frames

When they were handing out genes, I didn’t get the refrigerator picture one.

My deoxyribonucleic acid wasn’t programmed for that.

I think someone forgot to tell my chromosomes that pictures on a refrigerator are a thing.

Yep.

The refrigerator picture gene skipped right over me and passed on to the next generation.  I think this explains the current random picture assortment on the fridge in our kitchen.

It just appeared one day with a lunch schedule.Continue reading
