The Year of Handmade

The Year of Handmade

joy-handmade-gift-ideas

Twelve years ago we started with the handmade gifts.

It was born of necessity.  There were brothers and sisters and dads and moms and cousins and grandmas and nieces and nephews who gathered around the Christmas tree every year.

And none of us were millionaires.

Not even close.

It helps that we are all a little competitive, my siblings and I.  We all wanted to be the best.  We all wanted to make Santa proud.  So there were gifts of lampshades made from my father’s old slides and bowls carved from fallen trees and entire books created from old love letters and a thistle created from the first 750 words from my blog.

So today, on the last day of November with December knocking at the door, I thought I would share some of my favorite ideas for a handmade Christmas.  Some are easy.  Some are a little harder.

But all are hand-crafted.

Hand-loved.

Handmade from the heart.

My Five Favorite Pillow Projects

My Five Favorite Pillow Projects

Make-a-Pillow-From-a-Reusable-Shopping-Bag

I was so excited to be asked to co-host My Favorite Things, a series hosted by Jennifer from Dimples & Tangles, Kris from Driven by Decor, Lisa from Shine Your Light, and Pam from Simple Details.

This month we are talking pillows.

When I went back and researched all the pillow projects I had ever created on the blog, I discovered two things.

1.  I have a plethora of pillow DIY’s.

You could say a myriad.

Or a multitude.

Or simply a lot.

2.  I think my pillows are all about my house.

And vice versa.

But enough vocabulary and pillow self-reflection.

Let’s get this pillow party started.Continue reading

One time I had to take a personality test for a class at school.

You know, the ones where they list dozens of adjectives and they ask you to choose which ones resemble you and then there are lists of questions like “Do you see the glass as half-empty or half-full?”

I think that’s where I figured out I’m a glass half-full type of person.

I’m all about sunshine and happiness and joy and rose-colored glasses and seeing rainbows after a storm.

99.96% of the time.

Except.

Except for last week.Continue reading

DIY Reclaimed Wood Monogram

DIY Reclaimed Wood Monogram

reclaimed wood

This entire project started with this wood.

I saw it and I had to have it.

I know I live in the country and we have barns that are falling down and old wood scattered around and pieces like this by the side of the road.

But I didn’t get it at any of those places.

You will never guess where I got it.

Never.

It came from HOBBY LOBBY.

Can you even believe it?  I saw it in the wood section already cut in a nice bundle called Wood Pile and it was only $4.99 for an ENTIRE BUNDLE.  I’m sure its a cousin to the barn around the corner.  And wait for it….just wait for it….I used my 40% coupon from my phone and got it for 40% off of that.

And then of course, I had to make something with all that amazingness.

So I made this.

Back Porch Bench

I remember the first monogram I ever made.

It involved paint pens and a bow and a whole lot of confidence.

I’m not sure how it started.  I think I saw a bow on Madonna when she was dancing around with her lucky star and I realized that I had a similar hair accessory.

Light bulb moment.

I ran to my room and took out my sticker covered plastic paint pen box and promptly added a letter to the bow.

It didn’t really bear the slightest resemblance to anything lucky.  The bow was grosgrain ribbon and so the edges of the paint pen letter were kind of fuzzy and my K looked like it needed a shave. And that when I had light bulb moment number two.  Cover up all that fuzz with a monogram.

And some flowers.

And a swirl or two for good measure.

The rest simply defies description.

Bows gone wild…..meet my monogram. 🙂Continue reading

Pink Vinyl Monogram

Have you ever heard of throw-back Thursday?

You know…where everyone posts their amazingness from years ago and we all laugh and remember the good old days.

I know today is Monday.

I get it.

But I just couldn’t resist.

One of the best things about writing a blog is that you chronicle all the days and stories that went before.  Here’s one I had forgotten about that made my heart skip a beat and laugh out loud all at the same time.

Especially because the tiny teachers just asked me for mascara. 🙂Continue reading

How to Paint a Monogram

How to Paint a Monogram

paint-a-monogram-on-fabric

Can we still be friends if I tell you I painted my chair?

I couldn’t help it.

Blame it on the paint brush.

This is my office at the gatehouse and this is exactly what you see when you walk in the front door and look to the left.

I love these desk chairs.

I bought them at a junk store and had them recovered and added padding and nail-head trim and gray and white striped fabric and they looked perfect….

….except.

Except they needed some red lipstick…..

….bright pink to be exact. 🙂Continue reading

Etched Monogram Mason Jars DIY

I wish you lived down the road.

I know I’ve said this before.

But it’s true.

I wish you lived in the white house with the picket fence and the roses and day lilies and the herd of goats in the front yard that are always escaping.

Okay…..maybe just the picket fence without the goats.

And when you stopped by the house to see the roses and drink sweet tea on the back porch and listen to me tell you all about how I made the monogrammed mason jars and listen to my sad tale of woe about  how “nobody”  broke one of the moss-covered urns last weekend…..

….you would bring  a pie.Continue reading
