The Mane Event

The Mane Event

Gatehouse Office

I spent the week organizing the office at the gatehouse and sitting through middle school cheer try-outs.

I watched and encouraged and got water bottles and found the perfect headband and helped with the motions and listened.

Listening was the hardest part.

Especially when she tells you that part of her wants to stand-up and shout the cheer from the roof-top and make sure the motions are sharp and wear a cute headband and try her back handspring even if she needs a spotter and part of her wants to stop and not even try and not worry about making it and just cheer from the stands.

Trying out for something you really, really want can be really scary.

I get it.

And so I listened.

Because I understand more than she will ever know.

The Day the Gatehouse Went All Farmhouse

The Day the Gatehouse Went All Farmhouse

chalkboard farmhouse

Just know that I’m laughing as I write this.

I tried.

I really, really tried.

I tried to be fun and crazy and full of color and mix pink with orange and add giant polka dot rugs and patterned walls.

But it never really seemed to work at the Gatehouse.  I made it into my office space for the blog and set up my computer and desk and fancy calendars from the Target dollar spot and went to work.  And it was okay and fine and the polka dot rug made me smile one day out of the week.

But in the end?

My heart will always belong to farmhouse.Continue reading

How to Fill A Giant Blank Wall After a Basketball Game

How to Fill A Giant Blank Wall After a Basketball Game

chalkboard wall

I’m not sure how or why or when March showed up.

But it did.

And it brought with it daylight savings time and the promise of sunshine and the hope that the grass might one day actually be green and much-anticipated company to the gatehouse.  My brother formerly of the boxes that look like people and currently of the pallet letters is about to be in the house.

And so I did what any about-to-be-visited sister would do…..

…..and made a giant chalkboard.Continue reading

How to Transform a Builder’s Door

How to Transform a Builder’s Door

how to transform a builder's door

Sometimes I send my husband sweet e-mails at work.

Full of encouragement and hearts and hands clapping a smiley faces.

And sometimes I get a conversation that starts like this:

Him:  “Why did you send me an e-mail that ended with a chin?”

Me:  (dumbfounded) “What?  A chin? I sent you a smiley face.”

Him:  “I know.  I saw that.  But the smiley face had a chin.”

Me:  (starting blankly)

Him:  (helpfully drawing it out on a piece of paper) “It looked like this.”

I laughed out loud.

I couldn’t help it.

Me:  (after I finally stopped laughing) “That’s a heart.”

Yes, KariAnne, There is a Pottery Barn

Yes, KariAnne, There is a Pottery Barn

front-door-decorating-ideas-how-to

If you live in a small town where everyone knows your name and your business and your monogram and how many wreaths you use to decorate the front door of a gatehouse….

…this story is for you.

When we first moved to the country and bought the farmhouse. everyone immediately made that farmhouse their business.

They would drive by the house slowly and stare, just to make sure they didn’t miss anything.  They’d look at the trails of wallpaper scraps and the new porch and the new front door and the old kitchen cabinets on the lawn and the piles of lumber from all the parts of walls we took down….

….and talk about it over dinner.

And when I went to a party or baseball game or the gas station or the school….someone would inevitably stop me and the question would always be the same.

“What are y’all doing to that farmhouse?”Continue reading

How to Make a Peg Board Box

How to Make a Peg Board Box

how-to-make-peg-board-box

Every time I wrap a present I spend more time gathering up all the supplies and trying to remember to put them all back where they belong…..

….than time spent actually wrapping the gift.

I track down the scissors and the ribbon and the bags and the card and the tape and cart it to the table.

Then I wrap the gift and run out the door.

Because I’m late.

*sigh*

Always.

And in my rush I never return anything where it belongs and the supplies scatter to the four corners of the earth…..never to be found again.

Until now.

All the wrapping supplies have finally found a home.

Here’s how to make a peg board box and a gift wrapping station.Continue reading

How to Paint a Monogram

How to Paint a Monogram

Can we still be friends if I tell you I painted my chair?

I couldn’t help it.

Blame it on the paint brush.

This is my office at the gatehouse and this is exactly what you see when you walk in the front door and look to the left.

I love these desk chairs.

I bought them at a junk store and had them recovered and added padding and nail-head trim and gray and white striped fabric and they looked perfect….

….except.

Except they needed some red lipstick…..

….bright pink to be exact. 🙂Continue reading

Painted Wall Treatment Idea (on a budget)

Painted Wall Treatment Idea (on a budget)

how-to-paint-a-wall

This is the story of a blank wall.

I know.

I’m with you.

I can’t believe there was one left in the house.

This particular blank wall was behind the hutch in the dining room at the gatehouse.  It was white (which made me happy because it was so bright) and empty (which made me sad because it was not really living up to its potential).

Until now.Continue reading
