Don’t Wear White After Labor Day and Other Life Lessons

Don’t Wear White After Labor Day and Other Life Lessons

They say that April showers bring May flowers.

After several near-flash floods and gray skies and weeks of frizzy hair and 17 rained out baseball games….

….meet my April.

I went out to the garden yesterday and clipped dozens of flowers and arranged them in a yard sale soup tureen and put them in the middle of the family room and wished myself a happy Mother’s Day.

And now?

I want to celebrate with you.

I want to send you flowers and wish you a Happy Mother’s Day and entertain you with a little story…..

….all about kids and the mothers who learn from them. 🙂Continue reading

5 Simple Tips for Planting Hydrangeas

5 Simple Tips for Planting Hydrangeas

disclosure:  this post is brought to you by Endless Summer ® Hydrangeas.

At the back of the house, around the corner from the meadow and the hay bales is a tiny garden path with round stepping stones that leads to the side yard.

It kind of gets forgotten.

The flower bed is overgrown and a little neglected and left behind the rest of the yard.

Until now.

This weekend we pulled weeds and removed old plants and pruned existing shrubs and filled the flower beds with mulch and added a little bit of happiness with….

How to Get Hydrangea To Bloom

How to Get Hydrangea To Bloom

I recently read about the most adventurous man in the world.

He planned and hoped and dreamed for years to climb the highest peaks on each continent and sail the seven seas.  He traveled the globe and sailed around the world and faced hardships and challenges and snow and ice and raging waters, but eventually he climbed that last mountain and sailed that last sea.

It is an incredible accomplishment.

One requiring great fortitude and extreme endurance.

I know.

I think I understand.

Because that’s exactly how I felt this week….

….when my hydrangea finally bloomed.Continue reading

How to Make a Hanging Mason Jar Vase

diy hanging mason jar vase diy project

Here’s the state of the plant report for the last week of May 2015.

Remember when I thought all the plants were gone and was wringing my hands and hanging my head, but I decided to choose sunshine?

And you told me to wait.

And to be patient (totally not my specialty).

I’m happy to report that you were right (as ususal).  The nandinas came back.  Well, most of them.

Those wonderful, little, amazing, incredible plants pushed their way up from the ground and sprouted new leaves and look better than ever.

So I’m celebrating with a simple garden project.  You can make this diy mason jar hanging vase for under $5.00 in under 10 minutes.

Celebrate good times c’mon.Continue reading

Good morning rock star.

Here’s a few random thoughts on an almost-stormy Saturday morning.

1.  I’m thinking about adding a faux brick wall to the house.  I’m all in.  I just have to convince a few other people.

2.  Nothing says spring like walking in fresh green grass without shoes on.  Yesterday I actually felt the grass squish between my toes.

3.  Best outfield catch ever at the ballpark last night.  Time suspended as it hung in the air.  I thought he was going to drop it.  I thought I was going to have to prepare my “you can’t catch them all” speech.  But he emerged victorious with the ball clasped firmly in his glove.

4.  I read somewhere about the “Lark Rise to Candleford” series and I think it looks like Downton Abbey’s cousin.  Have you seen it?

5.  You are amazing.

I know a million other people will tell you that today….

….but I wanted to be the first. 🙂

I love this post.

Well-written and heartfelt.

You can read it….here.

Dear Carolina

My friend Kristy just finished her first book.

I couldn’t put it down.

Seriously.

I wanted to be friends with the characters and have one of them decorate my house.  It’s a story about two mothers, one biological and one adoptive, and the love they have for each other and a sweet baby named Carolina.

Best new book I have read in a while.

You can read more about it….here.

And now in random Saturday news:

Love this project.  Everything old is new again.

Great neutrals for a small space.

This made me laugh.  Dogs annoying cats with friendship.

Great furniture idea.

The best way to keep flowers fresh.

And I love the simplicity and sweetness of this house tour.

Happy Random Saturday to you.

Now go take on the day. 🙂

Can you feel my landscaping pain?

This was the winter to end all winters.  It was cold and then it would warm slightly and then plunge us into cold again.

And again.

And then it would snow and sleet and with heavy rains day after day.

Week after week.

And all the plants and shrubs and trees sat in that wet, wet soil.

And now they look like this.

How To Make a Folding Screen From Old Doors

Door Shelf Project

Have you been to a salvage yard or junk store lately?

They really like their stuff.

I mean really really like it.

I’ve seen stacks of windows and doors and architectural pieces left out in the rain and worn and tired and rusted with giant holes in them that look like they are destined for a life of gloom and misery…..

…..with a price tag higher than the Hope diamond.

I think they charge extra for chippy and rickety.Continue reading

I wanted to correct an oversight pointed out to me by the official Pi historian who lives at the farmhouse.

Total my bad.

Last Saturday was Pi Day….

….and I missed it.

Normally I salute a Pi Day with a wave and a nod and a simple shrug of my shoulders.

But this one?  It only happens once a century.

The perfect Pi day.

 3/14/15.

And at 9:26 and 53 seconds Pi perfection is achieved.

Cue the standing ovation and a ticker tape parade. 🙂Continue reading
