Five Minute Flower Arrangement With an Extra Dose of Perspective

Five Minute Flower Arrangement With an Extra Dose of Perspective

When we remodeled the kitchen at the farmhouse, we started with the floor.

I thought it would be easy and five-minutes and not-too expensive and done before Dancing With the Stars came on.

I thought wrong.

We pulled up four layers of flooring on our kitchen floor before we reached the original floors underneath.  It was an arduous journey, full of twists and turns and disappointment and the occasional moment of triumph.

Kind of like 20,000 leagues under the sea.

And when the final floor was revealed, my husband called me over with dismay in his voice,

“Oh no,” he sighed.  “What are we going to do about this?”Continue reading

Spring Door Decorating Ideas

Spring Door Decorating Ideas

This post is brought to you by Kwikset.

Are you a front door or a back door house?

A front door house is a little fancier.  There’s usually a living room right off the entry that’s clean most of the time because no one really ever eats Captain Crunch in there.

A back door house is a little more all about coming on in and having sweet tea.  There’s usually a recycling bin and some bikes stacked up and Christmas wreaths that have to be put up in the attic you have to wade through to get to the entry way.

If you had to choose, which one would it be?

Which door is your house?

Two For the Price of One

Two For the Price of One

flowers and quote

You know when you go to a yard sale and you find the perfect basket that’s missing a handle and a little lopsided, but you know that you can make it perfect with spray paint and some imagination. So you tuck it under your arm and you poke around at the yard sale a little more and find a random drawer for only $2.00 because no one really knows what to do with a drawer without a dresser to go with it.

But you do.

You know what to do with a drawer because you just saw on Pinterest where people were taking random drawers and making them into organizers on the wall.  So you walk up to the owner of the yard sale with kind of a pitiful look on your face and hold out the broken basket and the drawer and tell her you only have $2.00 and if you bought the basket would she throw in the drawer for free?

And she shrugs and says yes and you smile inside and skip off into the sunset with your treasures.

Two for the price of one.

That’s a lot like this post.  I was in the middle of a photo shoot yesterday and I finished and had all these amazing flowers and I had tossed a few on the table and I looked at them and was so totally inspired to create a little flower art and add some quotes about spring.  I made them for you and you can pin them or save them to your ipad or computer for inspiration or print them off or make them your home screen or fold them into a paper origami centerpiece.  Just a little spring gift from me to you.

But we couldn’t just have beautiful spring flowers with quotes.

This is story central.

So because it’s spring and I’m feeling mushy, I added one of my favorite love stories, too.

See what I mean?  Two for the price of one.

Now where did I put that drawer. 🙂Continue reading

Whatever happened to food just being what it is?

Have you noticed that food is evolving?

What is going on?

Hamburgers are becoming tacos.

Cookies are becoming banana splits.

Chips are becoming dill pickles.

Tacos are becoming chicken sandwiches.

And chips are becoming dill pickles.

I miss the days when a cookie was just known for its chocolate chips. 🙂Continue reading

DIY Flower Monogram Letter

DIY Flower Monogram Letter

Bonzai and I watched the last episode of Downton Abbey last night.

He was there to console me.

I won’t give away the details in case you haven’t seen it, but I will say this.  After watching six seasons where someone always was on trial for murder or leaving for Europe because they got replaced as head of the hospital or having their house turned into a convalescent home for wounded soldiers or running off to France to try out a potential husband, it was disconcerting to see so many happy endings.

And so gratifying.

And truly the end of an era.

If you haven’t seen it yet and your heart needs something to smile about today, run….don’t walk….to watch the final episode.

And if watching Downton Abbey isn’t your thing?

I have a fun DIY Flower Monogram Letter project for you.

Either choice, it’s a great way to spend two hours. 🙂Continue reading

The Song That Hope Wrote

The Song That Hope Wrote

This week we spent the evening listening to a choir performance by one of the twins.

It was a Quad-State choral festival about an hour away from us that started at 6:30 at night.

And just between us, to get there by the time it started required an effort of almost herculean proportions.

I had to corral everyone from their various after-school activities and make sure they were dressed in something other than an under armour sweatshirt and jeans and produce food for the journey and wait for my husband to get off of work and listen to 101 excuses as to why a sister or brother really shouldn’t have to sit through a choir concert their sister was singing at.

And by the time 6:30 rolled around I was not in a choir-listening mood.

Instead, I was exhausted.Continue reading

Five Tips to Get the Farmhouse Look

Five Tips to Get the Farmhouse Look

farmhouse look

We all have different ideas of fun.

Some people cook.

Some people read (awesome fun).

Some people run (maybe not so much fun).

Some people walk outside on a sunny day and listen to cows and watch birds in the sky and feel spring in the air (sounds like a movie kind of fun).

I take pictures of my house.

Just between us, I would rather take pictures of my house than meet Brad Pitt.  And that’s saying a lot.

Yesterday I had just gotten some fresh flowers for the house, so I pulled out my new lens and started snapping away.  Then I snapped and smiled and snapped and smiled and snapped some more. Here’s some pictures of the room with a different perspective and a few farmhouse decorating tips along the way.Continue reading

From the Grocery Store to Downton Abbey

From the Grocery Store to Downton Abbey

easy flower arranging tips

I think I live for Sunday nights and Downton Abbey.

And somewhere along the way I got hooked on Mercy Street, too.

Just in case you haven’t watched it, I won’t discuss.

Even though I want to.

Even though I want to say to Edith….FINALLY.

But I won’t.

I’ll just talk about my flowers and arranging and how I took this bundle of white roses from the aisle of the grocery store to the halls of Grantham House in London.

I’m sure even Violet would approve. Continue reading
