10 Fall Decorating Trends I’m Decorating With Right Now

happy fall wreath

I cannot WAIT to show you what I’ve been working on for fall.

(insert raising hands and stomping feet)

It’s my favorite fall ever.

Like a dancing around with spirit fingers singing “Don’t Stop Believin” kind of fall.

I’m not sure what it is about this year, maybe it was the flash flood or the humidity or the hot temperatures mixed with all the rainy days.

But I’m so over it.

Let’s talk fall.

Here’s 10 trends I’m using in my decor this year (most of them are under $5.00).Continue reading

Easy Spring Mantel Decorating Ideas (and a Giveaway)

Easy Spring Mantel Decorating Ideas (and a Giveaway)

mantel decor

Yesterday was a good day.

A good good day.

Nothing out of the ordinary.  No fireworks or cartwheels in the front yard or ticker tape parade.  Just a whole lot of ordinarys that added up to spectacular.

I had a great hair day and found these black and white patterned pants from Old Navy that made me look skinny and went on a date with super yummy coffee and shopped and decorated for spring got these easy spring mantel decorating ideas ready for you and listened to all the middle school gossip and topped it all off with a basketball game where my son played like he was heading to the NBA and then talked to me all the way home over a McDonald’s chicken sandwich and fries.

And the snow melted and the sun shone.

And to celebrate and send a little joy your way, I thought I’d give away a $50 Amazon gift card to one of you.

Just because.

Just to make you smile.

Just because today is a good day, too.  🙂Continue reading

decorating-mistakes

I’ve made a few decorating mistakes before.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love the farmhouse.  I love its quirks and its randomness like a door on a set of stairs from almost 100 years ago.  I love its fancy chandeliers and ceiling medallions and floor grates (thanks for all the floor grate love).

We’ve remodeled almost everything from top to bottom and while the house makes my heart beat faster, there’s still a few things I would ask for a do over on.

Because just like my mother said about stirrup pants and legwarmers.

It’s always a good idea to learn from your mistakes.

Through the Years and The Evolution of a Porch

Through the Years and The Evolution of a Porch

the porch before

I’m pausing just a moment on this busy Monday morning with an ode to my porch:

Through the years

You’ve never let me down

You’ve turned my life around

The sweetest days I’ve found, I’ve found with you

Through the years

No one sings it like Kenny.

And this is the beginning of the porch’s journey.  The before before.  Before the black and white and Christmas trees and magnolias and neutrals.

This is where it all started.

This is where it began.

Do you have any idea what this is?

You probably guessed right away when you saw it because you are smart like that.  I, on the other hand, had no idea.

I just knew I needed it.

Numbers.  Check.

Typography.  Check.

A little bit of history and rust and character and I’m sure a lifetime of stories to tell.

Check. Check and double check.Continue reading

Painting Projects

Good morning sunshine.

Top of the morning to you.

I’m in the beautiful football loving state of Alabama today working on a historic show house and DIYing it all day today.  We are building a kitchen island and making a headboard out of a door and picture frames out of molding and I’m picking out furniture and incorporating it with a selection of antiques from the original owners and measuring and dreaming and planning and decorating.

And drinking coffee.

Lots and lots of coffee.

If you want to follow along with my adventures today, you can find me on Instagram and Periscope (it’s an app for your phone and my name is @ThistlewoodFarm).Continue reading

Farmhouse Kitchen Desk

One of these days I’m going to write a stream of consciousness post.

Remember those from high school literature junior year?

The author of the piece would just write down whatever they were thinking.  It was kind of like chasing rabbits with a literary accent.  Sometimes it made sense and sometimes it didn’t.  At the time I thought it was ridiculous.

Now me and my much wiser self think it’s brilliant.Continue reading
