When my children were younger it wasn’t easy to decorate.

I had four little people under the age of six.

I’d add a pillow.

They’d un-pillow it.

I’d fold up blankets and put them in a basket.

They’d un-blanket it.

I’d stack books with metal spheres on the coffee table and they would un-coffee table it.

It always takes a little longer when you are decorating with friends.

Every couple of months, I’m lucky enough to get to go to the Kirkland’s corporate offices to tour all the behind the scenes.

I love those trips.

Everyone there feels like they should live down the street from me and I get to see all the upcoming collections and pretend like I’m a home and garden reporter in my head.

On my last trip, right in the middle of almost having a come-apart over all the reclaimed wood and this new vintage reproduction light collection, I spotted something out of the corner of my eye.

I couldn’t help it.  I skipped and rushed and ran to the back wall….

The other day I was visiting my friend and we were laughing and telling each other that we needed to bring stirrup pants back and that Saved By the Bell was the best show in the universe and should we start wearing scrunchies again.

And mid hair accessory conversation, I noticed her table.

It was chippy and distressed and had character and personality and joie de vivre.

I’m married to my best friend.

He understands me and laughs with me and shops at Habitat for Humanity for chairs with me and has eyes that twinkle and when I ask him if we can move the chairs that were just painted into the middle of the back yard to photograph them….

….he doesn’t even bat an eye.

And when I dance around the yard with my camera and point to the sunlight streaming over the grass because it’s the golden hour and the light is perfect and get so excited because I probably won’t even have to edit the photos…

….he smiles and nods encouragingly.

Even though he has absolutely no idea what I’m talking about.
