How To Pick the Perfect Paint Color for a Room Without Repainting it Five Times

How To Pick the Perfect Paint Color for a Room Without Repainting it Five Times

When we finished this room and the walls were removed and the wallpaper was stripped and the floors were refinished….

…we finally painted the walls.

Not once.

Not twice.

Not three times.

No, not even close.  Truth? We painted this room FIVE times in a month.

(total aside:  my husband has the patience of a saint)

The moral of the paint story?  Sometimes you encounter a few paint speed bumps along the way to the perfect color for a room (this one is painted SW Mindful Gray).

Don’t be like me.  Choose your paint wisely.  If you are on a paint journey or about to be on a paint journey or think that painting a room might be in your future?

This is the post for you.

Thistlekeeping

Thistlekeeping

A few random thoughts on a rainy Saturday morning:

1.  Has anyone watched Outlander?  I’m thinking about starting it, but I need a little input first.

2.  I just saw daffodils by the side of the road.  #hellobeautiful

3.  I’m kind of all about veggie burgers lately.  And I’m thinking about roasting brussel sprouts.  My family literally quirked an eyebrow at me.

4. And in total sad news this morning (the saddest of the sad), my son walked downstairs with his baseball uniform on.  Ready.  Set.  Go.  It’s the first game of the season.

Exciting, right?

Except.

Except now it’s pouring rain. 🙁

Five Minute Flower Arrangement With an Extra Dose of Perspective

Five Minute Flower Arrangement With an Extra Dose of Perspective

When we remodeled the kitchen at the farmhouse, we started with the floor.

I thought it would be easy and five-minutes and not-too expensive and done before Dancing With the Stars came on.

I thought wrong.

We pulled up four layers of flooring on our kitchen floor before we reached the original floors underneath.  It was an arduous journey, full of twists and turns and disappointment and the occasional moment of triumph.

Kind of like 20,000 leagues under the sea.

And when the final floor was revealed, my husband called me over with dismay in his voice,

“Oh no,” he sighed.  “What are we going to do about this?”Continue reading

My Favorite Family Thanksgiving Tradition

My Favorite Family Thanksgiving Tradition

thanksgiving-tree

We are big on tradition in our family.

As in, watch what you do one year…

…because you may be doing it years and years hence.

Like the annual family football game.

And the perfect slice of cranberry bread.

And highs and lows of the year on Thanksgiving.

And a Thanksgiving dinner table full of everything from turkey to mashed potatoes to ham to freshly baked rolls.

But my favorite family Thanksgiving tradition?

Our thankful tree.Continue reading

One Day They’ll Tell the Story

One Day They’ll Tell the Story

centerpiece for Thanksgiving

One day my children’s children’s children will tell stories about me.

I can’t wait.

Truly.

I’ll be perched on a rocking chair with glasses and a gray messy bun still wearing yoga pants and red lipstick…..

….listening to every word.

This one will say this and that one will say that and they’ll laugh and giggle and roll their eyes and wonder if the stories are true.  They’ll talk about the time I brought the roast to garden club and the day I wore Lee Press On Nails and how I almost cried in a newspaper publisher’s office.

But the story they’ll tell over and over again?

Is the one where I was so close to amazing.Continue reading

Five Simple Inexpensive Centerpiece Ideas

Did you know there are over 1000 posts on this blog?

I know, right?

Just between us I’m as surprised as you.

Four and a half years ago I sat down at the computer and clicked publish on the first one and I never looked back.  In between basketball and cheerleading and baseball and PTO and dogs and cats and kids….

….I wrote.

And wrote a little more.

And you left me a comment and I laughed when I read it and wrote more.

Until one day in July I started researching centerpieces for a free-lance article I’m working on and searched the blog to see if I had any blog posts that I’d written on tables and flowers and centerpieces I had created before.

And 32 posts came up.  Continue reading

Three Easy Christmas Centerpiece Ideas Under $20

Christmas back porch

Remember how I said I was not going to over commit this season?

Remember my list of five guidelines for a no-stress holiday?

I was this close.

This close.

I spent the first eight days of Christmas wrapping my gifts and ordering online and decorating with what I have and not over thinking everything and shaking my head no when I might have nodded it yes in the past.

Christmas was on track for smooth sailing this year.Continue reading

This Post is Brought to You By the Produce Aisle

Yesterday I had a brilliant idea.

The Thanksgiving centerpiece to end all Thanksgiving centerpieces.

I was going to create a giant burlap cornucopia out of paper mache and toothpicks and determination.  I admit that the construction details were a little fuzzy.  No worries.  I was going to go all Tim Gunn and make it work.

And that’s not even the brilliant part.

I was going to place it on a linen runner and have pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and textures spilling out in every direction.  Gray pumpkins and white pumpkins and green pumpkins.  Pumpkins with stripes.  Pumpkins with warts. Pumpkins that look like they just left a night club and were still ready to party.

Can you see it?

Are you with me?Continue reading
