I knew the Olympics were coming.

I remember discussions and promos and pictures of rings and vague references to summer 2016.  But I had no idea they were next month until I watched the Olympic trials last night.  I turned on the television and there was Bob Costas who never looks any older and the Olympic swimming pool.

I couldn’t turn away.

Each of the swimmers perched on the edge of the pool had worked hour after hour and month after month and year after year for that moment.

And in an instant it was over.

Some were victorious and some not so much.

I think there’s something about watching someone’s dream come true right in front of your eyes that’s fascinating.

Rio 2016….

….I don’t want to miss a minute. 🙂

Anyone else joining me and Bob Costas?Continue reading

Getting My Summer On

Getting My Summer On

This post is brought to you by Yankee Candle.

table setting ideas

I wish you could stop by for coffee this morning.

I have so much to tell you.

Truly.

I’d throw open the door and tell you how happy I was that you were there and you’d say my messy bun looked amazing and I’d tell you it had paint splatters in it.

And then we’d laugh like we had known each other forever.

Then I’d show you the perfect new nail polish color called Field Fox that I just found that’s not too bold, not too boring with a hint of lilac and a hint of khaki that kind of looks like spring and tell you that I started watching Gilmore Girls again from the beginning and we should pack our bags and move to Stars Hollow.  And I’d show you this piece of molding that I just found by the side of the road that looks so full of promise and we’d head to the back porch where I’m in the middle of a fun project and when we walked through the rooms you would sniff…..

….and tell me the house smelled amazing.

And I’d smile and say, “I know….right?”

PS Look What I Did With My Dining Table

PS Look What I Did With My Dining Table

back porch decorating

I wish you could come over for coffee.

We have 247 things to discuss.

Like did you watch Downton Abbey last night?  And aren’t Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes the cutest couple on the universe?  And I’m so happy for Bates and Anna (except didn’t she look like she had way too much Meryl Norman base on) and that lady that came to blackmail Lady Mary was on my last nerves and good for Edith I hope she will finally be happy and Daisy needs to calm down.

And if you’re going to be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area on Friday, January 8 I’d love to meet you.  I’m having a fabric launch party and I’m giving away fabric and notebooks made out of the fabric and note cards made out of the fabric and we’re serving cookies that look like the fabric and partying like it’s 2016.  Which of course it is.  Stop by The Quilt Asylum in McKinney (right off the freeway at the Virgina/Louisiana exit) from 6:00-8:00pm.

And I found the best bobby pins that stay in your hair and come in polka dots.

And I am going to be on television in Nashville.

And I made you the cutest free printable for January at the end of the post.

Oh….and PS  look what I did with my dining room table.Continue reading

The Day Technology Left the Building

The Day Technology Left the Building

thistlewood-farms_thumb.jpg

When we jumped to the country eight years ago and bought an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere with a creek and a pond and acres of land to run and play in….

….never did I envision a house full of children staring at screens.

Not my children.

Never.

i-phones?

i-pads?

Video games?

Why?  Why would they ever need any of those?  They had blue skies and green grass and crickets and land to run….

….so why would technology ever be a part of the equation?Continue reading

Summer Decorating On the Back Porch

Back Porch Decor

In Kentucky we have a saying that if you don’t like the weather….

….just blink.

It’s so true.

Around here the weather can change on a dime.

One minute you are sitting on your back porch in the most amazing set of indoor/outdoor chairs listening to the crickets and drinking sweet tea and discussing if hamburgers taste better on a charcoal grill and if pink lemonade goes better with french fries than orange popsicles.

And then you blink.Continue reading

How To Make Sweet Tea Taste Better

How To Make Sweet Tea Taste Better

back porch dining

If you are from the south you were probably raised on sweet tea.

You know.

That perfect glass of iced cold goodness that quenches the thirst and fills the heart and makes the sun shine brighter.

In my search for the perfect glass of sweet tea with the perfect ratio of sugar to tea and ice, I came up with the answer to that age-old question.

Here’s how to make sweet tea taste better.

(and it’s totally not what you think).  🙂Continue reading

Painted Porch Project

Painted Porch Project

painted porch

Once upon a time there was a porch.

(Don’t you love a story that starts like that?)

Except this porch was a scary story.  I would tell everyone to go in the front door…just so they’d miss the porch.  It was peeling and flaking and in terrible condition.

Seriously.

It took “distressed” to a completely new level.

And now?

Now it’s all about itself.  It’s waving people in from the driveway and throwing tail-gate parties…..

….and showing off its transformation at porch fashion week (can you tell I’ve been watching Project Runway)?

And here’s the DIY for the painted porch project.Continue reading

Chalkboard Word Find Pumpkin

Chalkboard Word Find Pumpkin

word-find-chalkboad-pumpkin-project

I am up to my elbows in acorns and spray paint and wooden bowls carved from stumps and mercury glass pumpkins….

….decorating for the fall house tour on Monday.

And I can’t wait to share it with you.

In the meantime….please enjoy a repeat of one of my favorite projects from last year.

Because nothing says fall….

….like a chalkboard word find pumpkin. 🙂

Remember when pumpkins were orange?

Back in the day.

Before anyone ever painted pumpkins?

Before burlap pumpkins and dryer vent pumpkins and can lid pumpkins and straw pumpkins and pumpkins made from pallet wood.

Just orange.

Orange pumpkins from the Piggly Wiggly with a carved face.

Nothing too fancy…..

…just a face with triangle eyes and a triangle nose and a moon for a mouth.

And some years you were extra fancy and cut a snaggle tooth grin.Continue reading
