Sometimes You Just Gotta Sing

Sometimes You Just Gotta Sing

Christmas tree butler's pantry

There’s a radio station here that plays 24/seven Christmas music.

The other 340 days of the year it’s all about Adele and Sam Smith and Meghan Trainor and Ed Sheeran, but for 25 glorious, wonderful, incredible days it plays nothing but Christmas all the day long.

There’s old Christmas and new Christmas and silent nights and weary worlds rejoicing and reindeer paws and yuletide carols being sung by the fire and rocking around the tree.

And those are the 25 days days I tune in…..

….slightly off key and at the top of my lungs.

Merry Christmas plates

And so it was that I found myself in line at the bank the other day listening to Feliz Navidad.

You know.

All together now.

Let’s sing along.

Feliz Navidad

Feliz Navidad

Feliz Navidad

Prospero ano y Felicidad

I had the radio cranked to maximum volume and was singing along loudly and proudly.

How can you do anything else when that song starts to play?

And when I got to the chorus…..

….I added choreography.

Hand rolls and shoulder shakes and head bobs and every now and then I couldn’t help but punctuate a word with a finger point.

And on and on and on.

Wishing everyone a merry Christmas in my own little solid gold Christmas dancing world.

Finally it was my turn in line and the cashier came over the loud speaker and asked if she could help me.

Startled, I immediately stopped dancing, turned down the music and smiled.

Of course,” I said.

Then I signed the back of the check and handed it to her.

Merry Christmas pillow

“Don’t you just love Feliz Navidad?” I asked her as I was waiting for the deposit.

She nodded.

“Can you hear the song,” I said, turning up the volume again.

“Oh you don’t need to turn it up,” she said trying not to laugh out loud.  “We already all heard it.”

And as she spoke those words to me…..I looked through the drive-through window and saw a small crowd grinning back at me and waving.

And as I sheepishly waved back and drove away still humming to the radio station….

….I had one thought.

I was so happy I had my red lipstick on.

You always need stage make-up for a performance. 🙂

PS  I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas…..

….from the bottom of my heart.

  3. Wonderful story! I was babysitting my 1 year old granddaughter and had to go to the bank to make a deposit. She was in her car seat and was getting restless so I started to sing “Let Stay Together” out loud. I had no idea the teller left the speaker on while he went to complete my transaction. I am no Adele so I’m sure I hurt everyone’s ears in the bank. The teller was very professional, he handed me my receipt and thanked me for the serenade.

  41. KariAnne,
You are such a breath of fresh air during a busy holiday season. I love all of your posts and your gift of words makes me feel like you are talking to just me.

I too love to sing my heart out to holiday music. When my youngest now 22 was about 9 months old it was the holidays and Baby It’s Cold Outside came on the radio. I loved the song and would sing it out loud and he would be in his car seat kicking his feet to the music. For years this went on and whenever the song played in our house we would dance to it.
I remember fondly the time in high school, I was baking cookies and he walked in and the radio started to play our song. He took my hand and began to dance with me. He said, mom you do know this is about a couple and not about a mom and baby. Yes I said, but you always giggled when it came on the radio so I always told you they are playing our song.

His first year of college it was about two weeks until Christmas. He sent me an email with an attachment of the Mercer version of our song and said he hoped I enjoy it was much as he did. I cried so hard I could hardly write him a response.
No matter what time of the year he is married, he has decided we will dance to that song.

So keep singing and dancing Miss KariAnne!

  42. You are the best! Thank you for always making me laugh! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  43. I LOVE IT! The minute you said Drive Thru Bank – I started chuckling because I knew what was coming – how you ask? BEEN THERE, DONE THAT! For my “bank performance” I belted out Jingle Bells – you know the good version by Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters. And I do mean BELTED it with all the little trills etc… at least the teller was very complimentary…but it was not my lips that were red!

  44. Oh how I wish I could have been there!! But do you know what song I simply can’t resist singing at full volume???
Oh yes we need a little Christmas, right this very minute, candles in the window, carols at the spinner . . . I simply love that song. There is just something about it that you DO have to sing and dance to it 🙂 Big Christmas wishes to you too.

  45. Lanita Anderson :

Oh that was TOO funny….I probably should have been, but I wasn’t expecting you to say that about having the red lipstick on!! You’ve made my day….. Happy Friday, Friend!

  46. I wish I could have been on scene for your performance….♥♥ that would have made my day even better than it was!
Merry Christmas to you and your family~

  47. My image of you is dancing around on your tiptoes and singing happily. I am sure you are like that all the time!

  48. I sincerely hope you remembered your dangling earrings too! Too funny! Merry Christmas to your family too! 😉

  49. Oh I just love your posts! I was just tonight, at my birthday dinner, telling one of my best friends about you and your blog. See, she asked me how things with my blog were coming along and I told her that I hadn’t published anything yet because I’m doubting the direction I want to go. I told her when I read your posts it’s as if I could’ve wrote them myself! It’s kinda freaky to read the same way you write. Great though! Keep up all the life sharing and positivity, oh and of course singing and dancing like no one is watching because honestly, they’re just jealous!

  50. HaHa Ha!!! You always make me laugh!!! My son asked me what I was laughing about and I said, “Oh you know KariAnne and her funny self serenading the bank!!! You are just too funny! Although, sometimes you touch me right in my heart and I just cry!!! Love your wit and enthusiasm and letting us share your life! Many Merry Christmas blessings and God bless you!

Never change, your humor and your total honesty about who you are is such a special quality.

  53. YES! Sing your heart out. I’m sure you brought so much joy to the world and looked good doing it!

  54. Oh, Kari Anne, I just want to meet up with you for a cup of tea or coffee. I know that we would laugh. Thank you for bringing joy and a smile into my afternoon. We all need a little joy right now, don’t we?

  55. Rebecca Turner :

  57. You are the cutest, KariAnne! I can totally picture you, sitting in the car with your red lipstick, singing loud and performing to the song. You certainly spread some joy while running errands. Have a great Sunday 🙂 !

  58. Honey, if you can’t sing in your own car, where can you sing???
