Haven 2013: How To Blog and a Giveaway

Haven 2013: How To Blog and a Giveaway

(me and Jess)

This is how my face looked for the last 72 hours.

Grinning from ear-to-ear with red lipstick on.

I couldn’t help it.

I just smiled and laughed and chortled and giggled and guffawed my way through a blog conference.

Remember how nervous I was about that speech?

Remember how my knees were shaking?

Remember how carefully I planned out my earrings and my outfit and my funny story?

Just between you and me…..shhhhhh…..

Haven-2013 (2)

(a giant thank you to Dee for the red lipstick)

I mean….I know it’s probably in the speakers’ Β handbook somewhere that you should never shout out how amazing your speech was in all caps.

And I did accidentally show up with two different earrings on.

And spill the water pitcher.

And trip over the bump in the carpet.

Minor details.

Every. Single. One.

Because when I tentatively walked up to the podium with the microphone shaking in my right handΒ and the audience staring expectantly and I told the story and they actually laughed…..

….there was nothing left…..but absolute pure…wonderful….amazing….joy.

And when the conference was finished and I unfroze my face from an ear-to-ear grin….and my car turned down the winding country road…..

….my favorite audience of all was waiting for me. πŸ™‚

Beginning blogger or want to learn how to blog?

Here are five “must-have’s” for a basic blog design (and my part of the session).

(1) Β Header

I know this is basic….but your header is your first chance to make an impression on your readers.

Put your social media buttons right there at the top.

Make them happy or funny or colorful or classic.

Make them you.

Add an e-mail follow button right there at the top so when people read your amazing content and see your amazing photos they have to follow you.

Create a navigational bar that Β for a way for your readers to find your old content.

5 Elements For an Amazing Blog Design (Screen 3)

(2) Β Add a house tour

We all love our houses.

I want to marry mine….or at least have a glass of sweet tea with it.

Your readers want to see your house and your style and your rooms.

Create a pinnable graphic and add it to the top of your home tour page.

Add an image from each of the rooms in your house and have them click-through to a post about that room.

To see my sweet tea house tour….you can click here.

3. Β About Me

Tell your readers about yourself.

Tell them you are happy to meet them.

Put three of your favorite posts on the page so they can learn more about you.

Then take a picture of yourself behind a tree because behind the tree pictures always make you look skinnier.

To see my about me page…..click here.

5 Elements For an Amazing Blog Design (Screen 4)

4. Β Projects page

Easy way to introduce your readers to the last 365 days of projects.

There are all the projects they could ever want at their fingertips.

You can create this page using different plug-ins….but I really like Category Thumbnail.

To see my projects page….click here.

5 Elements For an Amazing Blog Design (Screen 5)

5. Β Advertise page

If you want to work with brands you have to be able to tell them what you can do for them.

Putting an advertise page on your blog is like hanging out a shingle.

Emphasize the positive and reference other companies or marketing campaigns you have worked with.

To see my advertise page….click here.

And here’s the rest of the presentation:

  52. KA-

I am so happy it all went well for you. I knew you would be a rock star – though, um, two different earrings, huh?
Hee hee. Well there was that time just as hubs and I were walking into a movie theatre he noticed I was wearing two distinctly different flip flop colours. We are still laughing 4 years later!

I simple told him it was the newest rage.

You look so happy in that first photo, pure bliss and joy and fun!

Your advice it great, and you know your blog is one of my all time favvie favs. Keep up the good work!

Have a great week with the Home Crew Cuties you had waiting for you!

I have a story to share and want to share it! Your style of writing is excellent – it feels so transparent, makes you real and down-to-earth, and it makes me want to be your friend. 60. I can only imagine how amazing your session was and someday I hope, I hope, I hope to attend if for nothing more than being able to hug my favorite blogger friend πŸ™‚ (Though I have to say that nothing could beat the audience you had waiting for you at home. They are precious!)

My son-in-law and daughter have been trying to convince me to start a blog for a few years now, but it seemed so overwhelming to me – where to begin, projects, etc. Maybe this is just the push I need πŸ™‚

    Thanks, KariAnne, for the opportunity!

  61. Oh my goodness! First of all, you are ADORABLE!!! I was so thrilled to meet you at Haven and you totally rocked your session. I look so forward to getting to know you more through following your Thistlewood Farms.

  62. I really need help with social media. I’m so lame that I accidentally posted incorrect info on my Facebook page; and I don’t even know how to remove it!

  63. I’d wear Red Lipstick and a great big Smile, too! Congratulations on a wonderful presentation. I’m setting my sights on beginning a blog and I’d be thrilled to have help.

  64. How cute are you! I would have spilled the water pitcher too! πŸ™‚

  65. Is there an acceptable age cut-off for how old you can be to begin a blog? Do you absolutely 100 percent have to be totally honest about this? I mean will anyone read a blog if I tell them I was born in 1945, am almost 70 years old and remember when Eisenhower was President?

  66. Lord, I would just love some expert eyes on my site to tell me where to improve! I haven’t brought in any graphic assistance (yet!) so I’m always curious where I can tweek and rearrange.
A GIANT thanks for the sessions at Haven, also. Hilarious and helpful and a little bit Hallelujah also. Loved.
    Charlotte @ Ciburbanity

I know that your family must be thrilled to have you home! You certainly bring light and love with you wherever you are! The house must have felt empty without you!

    Big hugs! -Lisa πŸ™‚

  68. Wish I could have gone to Haven again. Maybe next year!
What do I need the most blog help with? Well, everything really!
But if I had to narrow it down to two, I’d say the technical help and the social media help would be the ones I really need. And thanks for all the helpful tips and the chance to win.

  98. Great tips! My blog has been cruising along all casual and relaxed, patiently waiting for me to finish changing diapers, chasing toddlers, wiping grubby faces. Just waiting for its day to grow and shine. Perhaps that day is getting close……mind you, there’s still those diapers to change πŸ™‚ wish I could of seen your talk, and most of all, meet you in person. One day πŸ™‚

  108. And who was the rockstar? YOU were, Karianne! Your talk was warm, informative, energizing, and so YOU! We loved learning from you. Your life force radiated throughout the entire conference! And I am not just saying that because I was your “timer” and I sped you up so much that you still had six minutes left to talk when you thought you were over and just sat down! 112. So happy that your conference was a smile drenched success! I knew you’d rock the house.

Sadly, I took my blog down yesterday. There were so many reasons – many of which you’ve identified in this give-away. As my nana used to say, I’m a “day late and a dollar short.”

Perhaps one day I’ll begin another and try again. If I do, yours is the first door I’ll be knocking on for advice, a glass ‘o sweet tea, and lots of laughs.

In the meantime, I’ll be reading faithfully!

    Welcome home!

  113. Umm… everything! No, really. I love to design, to photograph, and to write, but finding the time to do it all as well as I want is so hard! I would love some help with the mechanics and layout of my blog and some ideas of where to pool my resources to get the best results. πŸ™‚

Thank you for hosting such a fabulous giveaway!!

    Rachel @ Maison de Pax

  123. Loved the class! I need help getting started and finding my way! So excited about what the future holds-thank all of you ladies who hosted our class for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!
    With Much Gratitude,

  124. I would take any advice right now since I am a new blogger! Even just finding out what I am doing right and wrong is helpful!

  125. I could use help with so many things… But definitely how to use categories, tags, and my menu and sidebars to be more reader friendly.

  126. Oh man, so wish I could’ve gone to Haven, hopefully next year. Thanks for sharing your tips. I need a blog makeover. Would love to win any of the above! Thanks for the giveaway!! πŸ™‚

  127. I need help with lots of areas on my blog, but especially the design of it. My header needs help. πŸ™‚

  128. My 2 cents worth….
if your blog is slow loading, you will lose readers. I have dropped several popular blogs because they take too much time to load. They have too much on their sidebar and the loading time is just CRAZY.
Then, once they DO load, they have the READ MORE feature, you click on it and it takes another long time to load.

  129. Fun giveaway!

  130. I RARELY comment on blogs but read them allot. That picture of you two in the hardhats made my day. Many things on your blog make my day. I plan on continuing to enjoy and live vicariously through your blog and many others. It is such a joy. Thanks for all you do.

  131. Sounds like you ladies had an AMAZING time! I have to admit MUCH of this blog stuff is WAY over my head….which is why I hope to win one of those fabulous prizes. I need some serious help πŸ™‚ Thanks!! Laurel

  132. Just what I needed today I had my tictket to Haven but didn’t go…so sad all weekend long. I would love to win and get me some me so awesome blogging skills.

  133. I would LOVE some design help with my blog. HTML is not my friend!:)

  134. Hey Kari!! You were SO awesome and that class was my very favorite of the conference!! I’ve been blogging for a while, but really haven’t done well trying to make it grow. I want to make the jump to WordPress and then get a whole new design!

  135. I’ve wanted to start a blog but need guidance. It would be awesome to win this great giveaway.

  136. Oh yeah…I head a hand out/heads up every where!! Thanks dearie!!

  137. It was so nice to meet you at Haven. I regret that I didn’t get to take your class and appreciate that you and the other girls are posting your parts of the presentation today.

If I won, I’d get help with adding pictures of projects to the side of my blog that go to that blog post. I don’t know if there’s a plug-in for that or if it’s something really simple that you can do in WordPress. For some reason, I haven’t been able to figure it out.

  138. Great giveaway and post! New to blogging and would love the help with blog design, promoting, working with brands….um, maybe that means everything! I need help!!!! πŸ™‚

  139. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! I need help with EV-ER-RE-THANG! If I don’t win, I’ll pay for it! Really!! (Should I have said that?! Will that mess up my chances of a freebie?) πŸ˜€

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your sweet comment. I finally feel like I’ve made it now and can die happy!

  140. I would love help with ads and figuring out SEO better and things I may not be doing right!!

    Thanks! Xoxo

  141. Oh my gosh, you sound like such a fun girlfriend to have, and while I missed Haven, next year I am there! Your blog is full of so may things, and so well put together – I would love the chance to have some help. I’ve only just begun and already am lost in the sea of “what to do!” –

  142. OH MY WORD! I love you. You are so genuine and adorable. My blog needs a jump start. Let’s get this thing going and wear Lucy Lockets while we’re doing it! πŸ˜‰

  143. You were a delight in the class, KariAnne, and you made me smile every time I saw you- you just radiate joy, and it’s contagious. πŸ˜€

  144. KariAnne, you were aweome! The entire conference was too! Haven inspired me to want to transition my blog to WordPress and split into two blogs! Ah! The thought scares me! But I know it will be great my vision is realized!

  145. I’m so glad your speech went well…I’m so jealous of bloggers who get to go to conferences…maybe someday! πŸ™‚ I’d love help in all areas of my blog, but especially on how to build my following! πŸ™‚

  146. I would do HAND STANDS if I won, I don’t know how to do ANY of the things you listed!!!!!!!! I am SO unsavvy, technically! HELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XOXO

  147. I am so glad that your speech went well. One of the best parts of blogging is watching so many wonderful and creative women becoming successful and then being honest about how hard it was, how thrilled they are to be doing well and how scary it all can be. I always enjoy your posts.

  148. To answer the question: I need to do a design tweak to update a few things and I can’t pay for it. I wish someone could walk me through a few things and could point me in the right direction. Just a little big thing. πŸ™‚

My friend….I’m guessing that everyone thought you tripped and spilled your water just to put everyone at ease and show you’re real like that. [wink] I’ll help you keep it a secret.

Wish I could have been there….you have no idea how much. I even tried the ruby slippers and clicking my heals…

  149. Oh, I would love any of these!! Thanks so much for hosting.

  150. I need help with my photography! (angles, lighting, etc.)

  151. I love your blog and am happy to hear that your presentation went well…I’ll bet you feel great about it all! I have been wanting to start a blog for a couple years now, I just don’t know where to start….I would love some help getting started!!

  152. Thank you so much for your willingness to share at Haven! I’m SO thankful and learned a lot! I definitely need technical support right now, a blog consultation, and a mini makeover! I’ve got quite the list to tackle after Haven!

  153. Would love to have had an opportunity to meet you in Haven… maybe one day I’ll get across the ocean to one of these wonderful blogging events. Glad you enjoyed it Kari.

  154. It was so nice meeting you at Haven, your smile truly lights up a room! I received an email the morning of the first day of the conference saying a ticket was available so I was in such a rush to just get the ticket & hotel transferred into my name, pack and drive the 3 1/2 hours to get there that it was overwhelming. No time to plan my trip, get cards to pass out to sister bloggers or to make a plan for which classes to attend so I could kick myself for not attending yours! I am glad that I got to meet you!!!
I need a blog re-do so bad and am scared to death to switch from blogger…html, code, say what!? SEO, say what?! Yep, I need help!
Thanks so much for the chance to win!
Cindy (the blonde one of charlie’s girls…LOL, you are so funny!!!)

  155. Thank you for an amazing presentation! I loved hearing you speak at Haven! I can’t wait to update my blog using the techniques you talked about. I plan to attend Haven next year, and I hope you’ll be a presenter again. You were awesome!

  156. KariAnne it was the BEST BEST BEST class that I was fortunate to take during HAVEN 2013, I was so inspired and so happy that I too had a giant grin on my face (maybe that was because you had two different earrings on?) KIDDING – I’m pretty sure no one noticed as they were listening to all your stories and great advice. This absolute baby blogger would cry if she won any of the above prizes, ya’ll are just so wonderful and inspiring.

I feel blessed to have met you and attended Haven. Thank you,
    Wendy xx

  157. I hope I entered the giveaway “correctly”! I would like to have help making my blog look current and polished. I would also like to know how to expand my audience.

  158. I discovered your blog a few months ago and I’m obsessed with all of your projects and every inch of your beautiful home. It is my dream to own a farmhouse some day. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about your preparation for the Haven conference and how much you enjoyed your experience. Until it becomes a reality I will fantasize about attending such a cool and useful event. As evidenced by the lack of website, I have to confess that I have NO BLOG. It’s shameful but true. The thing is I really want one. I’ve been thinking about it (obsessing over it) a lot lately and have spent weeks researching how to start a blog and what format to use and registering a domain name and lots of other verbiage that I know very little about. I’m fairly tech savvy but I keep questioning what I want to write about and whether or not anyone has an interest in hearing what I have to say (not-to-mention my fear of not being a graphic designer, home decor expert, or DIY genius like many of the other bloggers that I follow). Winning this contest would be amazing since I need help in ALL areas. Btw, is there ANY chance it also comes with a dose of self confidence or perhaps a bottle of self-doubt remover? Much love. Keep up the good work!

  159. I’d love to give my blog a look to match my personality!

  160. I loved your class – can’t believe you tried to kick me out on the first day! πŸ˜‰

  161. I need a shot in the arm, a kick in the pants, some basic direction to get my blog off the ground where it’s been dragging. Would love to win any one of these!

  162. I could use some help getting advertisers; I don’t have a page set up yet.

  163. Holy smokes, this is SO informative and helpful KariAnne! I didn’t get to see you at Haven (I REALLY wanted to be there), and this is an unexpected and delightful gift.

I’m going right to my blog to make the changes you suggest. You are a rock star!

    Annie XO

  164. I had a blast at Haven and it was so nice to meet you and listen to you speak at the New Kids on the Block session πŸ™‚ I still think you should write a book…
    ~Katie @ Upcycled Treasures

  165. Oh yeah and if I win I would like help organizing my projects in a pretty way πŸ™‚

  166. Thank you so much for the 5 tips. When I visit a new blog the very first thing I do is go to the home tour…and yet I’ve never posted a link on my blog. I sure hope to be picked. I’d love a little nudge in the right direction.

  167. What do I need help with? Oh my. What don’t I need help with?
Oh wait, you mean my blog! Ok. I’d love some help with that too. πŸ™‚
    I hope I get picked!
hugs to you KariAnne, I’m so glad you were a hit at the conference. I only wish I could’ve been there too!

  168. What is one thing you would love to have help with on your blog?

Organization and just getting more readers… I’m pretty sure no one reads… probably because I have no consistency! ha! Having the time to do it would help πŸ˜‰

I would love to win any of these!

  169. It was so much fun meeting you. You are sunshine! πŸ™‚

I’m in the process of a blog redesign–so thanks for this post, too.

  170. Loved your tips and will be working on my header! I’d love to win the giveaway to make my blog more engaging and appealing to readers and brands.

  171. LOVED< LOVED: LOVED meeting you in person! I'd like help on …. everything?

  172. It sounds like you had a marvelous time! Would have loved to have been at the Conference – hoping to next year! I’d love to win any of these marvelous prizes! So sweet of you all to offer these giveaways!

  173. Dear BFF,
I would LOVE to know what the next step is. How should I organize what’s coming and figure out how to be more consistent? You’re the bomb.com πŸ™‚

  174. That is awesome! I could never get up in front of people and speak.I’m actually shy, believe it, I really am more of a home body type and to see a crowd in front of me I would have to run out of the room. I am so glad it all went well.It looked amazing! I am really hoping I can make it next year.

  175. I didn’t get to take your class, so I hope I win πŸ™‚

  176. Thanks for sharing your presentation. I wish I could have been there. I know I have a lot to learn. I’d appreciate any help. πŸ™‚ I’m plugging along, but really want to get to the next level.

Thanks again and it was such a pleasure meeting you!!!

I have followed your blog for a while, and your home is really pretty.
In this, post, I got a real chuckle out of the part about having your picture taken behind a tree, to make one look skinny. That is the worst part, for me, so far… having my picture out there for the world to see. YIKES !
