January Fresh Start with a FREE Mrs. Meyer’s Kit

January Fresh Start with a FREE Mrs. Meyer’s Kit

My heart is longing for clean.

It can’t help it…

…it’s missing Christmas lights.

My house and I are at that awkward stage where you’ve cleaned up all the tinsel and put away the jingle bell garland and the tiny red car with a tree on top and now instead of twinkles everywhere, it all just looks kind of empty.

But sometimes empty isn’t so bad.

It can be a blank slate and full of possibilities and classic and cleansing and cathartic.

Especially when it smells good.Continue reading

How to Get Organized After Christmas

How to Get Organized After Christmas

This is what I wish my front entry looked like right now.

But, it doesn’t.

Not even close.

It’s auditioning for an episode of entry ways gone wild.

There are bit of paper and ribbon and tags and empty stockings and a reindeer wearing a party hat and sunglasses.

Christmas 2016 is officially in the books.Continue reading

How About Them Apples?

How About Them Apples?

When I was younger I was better at talking than listening.

I talked through the multiplication tables and chemistry and Romeo and Juliet and the entire history of the pilgrim population.

I talked so much I majored in it in college.

But now?

Now that I’m older and wiser….

….I’m trying to get better at listening.

And learning.Continue reading

The Best New Candle Scents of the Season

The Best New Candle Scents of the Season

One of my favorite things about fall is the smell.

I think every season has a smell…

…and fall’s is the best of all.

I love the smell of the air on a cool, crisp fall afternoon.

I love the smell of apples and cinnamon and pumpkin pie and the feel of a fuzzy wool scarf against my nose.

But when you write a blog, smell is a hard thing to get across.

So I put together a fun photo shoot for Yankee Candle that helps to illustrate the smells of their yummy new candle line called Wine Pairings.  It’s a really fun concept.  Each of the candle scents was meant to pair with a specific wine and cheese for the entire entertaining package.Continue reading

Easy Tip for Maximizing Your Rug Budget

Easy Tip for Maximizing Your Rug Budget

Living Room Decor

Yesterday I watched my zillionth tiny house show.  I can’t get enough.  I tell myself no more tiny house shows and then I end up sticking around to see where they hide the toaster or how big the bathroom is or the ingenious way they turn a bed into a couch and turn a couch into an entertainment center.

It’s addicting.

Last night the tiny house was amazing.  It was a luxury tiny house.  It had shiplap and farmhouse lighting and extra counter space.  I was kind of all about it.  I thought I could live there.  I could be a tiny house person.

And then I saw the loft.

And the bed.

You had to climb a ladder to get to this loft and crawl into bed in a space with a ceiling height of 2.5 inches.  I’d never make it.  I’d wake up in the middle of the night and forget I was in a tiny house and bump my head.

And that tiny space in that loft in that tiny house with its tiny roof?

It’s exactly like my rug budget.

(total aside:  just admit it….you were wondering how I was going to bring the story back around to the rug…right?) 🙂Continue reading

The other day I was visiting my friend and we were laughing and telling each other that we needed to bring stirrup pants back and that Saved By the Bell was the best show in the universe and should we start wearing scrunchies again.

And mid hair accessory conversation, I noticed her table.

It was chippy and distressed and had character and personality and joie de vivre.

I told her it was amazing and that all tables should get in line behind it and asked her where she got it.Continue reading

Four Things I Didn’t Realize About Window Installation

Four Things I Didn’t Realize About Window Installation

family room windows

It’s official.

We have new windows at the farmhouse.

They came last week and installed them and finished up while I was still cleaning up all the debris around the house.

And the result?

SERIOUSLY.

It is an all cap moment for the living room.Continue reading

Five Inexpensive Kitchen Remodeling Shortcuts

Almost eight years ago this room was nothing but a pipe in the middle of the floor and hundreds and hundreds of nails sticking up where we had pulled up layer after layer on the original floor.

We were remodeling the house and running out of money.

We started with an original budget and my husband had a detailed spreadsheet, but somewhere along the way we got derailed.

Like seriously.

Things that were supposed to cost $2.00, ended up costing $2.50 and all those .50 added up and our budget was limping along and asking for a place where it could lay down and rest.

My kitchen budget got cut in half.  Gone were the marble counter tops.  Gone was the built-in kitchen island.  Gone were the custom cabinets.

It was just me and a stack of laminate counter top samples.

And now?  Years later, sitting in my kitchen typing this post?

I’m so happy.

Because when you remodel a kitchen and the funds are low and you are wondering if your five gallon bucket can double as a sink, you only really need one thing….

….a little creativity.

Here are my top five inexpensive kitchen remodeling shortcuts.
