Best Tip for Cleaning Outdoor Cushions

Best Tip for Cleaning Outdoor Cushions

See that window with the plantation shutters in the top left-hand corner of this photo?

That’s where I stood all winter.

Looking back at the meadow.

Looking back at the snow.

Looking back at the wind and the weather and the rain and the sleet and the toll winter can take on a porch.

And then one day….

….I saw this.

5 Simple Tips for Planting Hydrangeas

5 Simple Tips for Planting Hydrangeas

disclosure:  this post is brought to you by Endless Summer ® Hydrangeas.

At the back of the house, around the corner from the meadow and the hay bales is a tiny garden path with round stepping stones that leads to the side yard.

It kind of gets forgotten.

The flower bed is overgrown and a little neglected and left behind the rest of the yard.

Until now.

This weekend we pulled weeds and removed old plants and pruned existing shrubs and filled the flower beds with mulch and added a little bit of happiness with….

How To Pick the Perfect Paint Color for a Room Without Repainting it Five Times

How To Pick the Perfect Paint Color for a Room Without Repainting it Five Times

When we finished this room and the walls were removed and the wallpaper was stripped and the floors were refinished….

…we finally painted the walls.

Not once.

Not twice.

Not three times.

No, not even close.  Truth? We painted this room FIVE times in a month.

(total aside:  my husband has the patience of a saint)

The moral of the paint story?  Sometimes you encounter a few paint speed bumps along the way to the perfect color for a room (this one is painted SW Mindful Gray).

Don’t be like me.  Choose your paint wisely.  If you are on a paint journey or about to be on a paint journey or think that painting a room might be in your future?

This is the post for you.

10 Outdoor Entertaining Ideas

10 Outdoor Entertaining Ideas

There are challenges to living in the country.

The closest Target is an hour away.

The electricity goes off on a regular basis when there are storms.

The cows moo when you’re trying to take a Facebook Live outside.

But all that fades.

All that disappears.

All that seems so insignificant when you sit at a table like this.

On behalf of the country….

….here are my top 10 outdoor entertaining ideas.Continue reading

My Best Piece of Blogging Advice (and an EXCITING Announcement)

My Best Piece of Blogging Advice (and an EXCITING Announcement)

I never met a piece of encouragement I didn’t like.

Especially when it comes to blogging.

Everywhere you look there are posts telling you to do it this way and make sure you write it that way and make sure you have alt tags and SEO and keywords and pictographs and clever titles and rooms that look like they stepped out of a magazine and pictures that will be pinned a zillion times on Pinterest.

And if you don’t?

You’ll never succeed.

Or so “they” say.

That’s why I’m so happy they asked me to be a mentor at Haven.  That’s why I can’t wait until July 20.  That’s why I can’t wait to encourage and uplift and listen and talk and laugh and explain why “they” forgot to mention….

….the rest of the story.Continue reading

Simple Ideas for Controlling Clutter

Simple Ideas for Controlling Clutter

Clutter is like that last Christmas party guest that won’t leave.

They’ve eaten your cheese dip and knocked an ornament off your tree and ensconced themselves in a chair telling you about their trip to the grand canyon for the fifth time.

You look longingly at the door.

Leave clutter, leave, you tell yourself.

But it never does.

Take charge.

Take control.

Take over….

….and show that cheese-eating, ornament-knocking, grand-canyon visiting clutter to the door.

Here are my very best simple ideas for controlling clutter.Continue reading

Love is a Painted Door

Love is a Painted Door

I live life on the edge when it comes to DIY.

I paint signs in dresses wearing red lipstick.

I stain frames in a ruffled shirt and chandelier earrings.

I laugh in the face of spilled paint or a runaway river of stain or splotches of splattered glue or glittered fingertips or layers of dripping glaze.

You’ve got this, I tell myself as I throw my head back and laugh with abandon.  Show that DIY you’re the boss.  Don’t ever let a few drops of paint get the best of you.

And then.

Last week it happened.

Along came a DIY project that stood up and took names and put me in my do-it-yourself place.Continue reading
