Five Tips for Taking Better Photos of a Room

Five Tips for Taking Better Photos of a Room

taking better room photos

Have you ever noticed that when you take a photograph of your space…..so many times what your eye sees….

….doesn’t always translate?

(total aside:  there’s a life lesson in there somewhere if we weren’t talking photography today).

When I first started taking pictures for the blog….I would style the room and be so all about it and think everything was perfect and grab the camera and take a picture and through the viewfinder…..

….it looked amazing.

Like Better Homes and Gardens should be knocking at the door.

But when I downloaded the photos and actually looked at the pictures….yikes….not so much.

It takes practice and learning how to think like a camera to get it right.

So 4754 pictures and hundreds of rooms later….here’s what I’ve learned from the picture-taking-school-of -hard-knocks.

Five tips for taking better photos of a room.Continue reading

But today?

Today is about fun and summer and sunshine and lemonade and green grass….

The Best Way to Remove Wallpaper

The Best Way to Remove Wallpaper

the best way to remove wallpaper

Before we begin.  Before we discuss the best way to remove wallpaper….I’m adding a disclaimer……

…..I’m not a professional wallpaper remover.

Not even close.

I never went to wallpaper college or studied up or took a class on the ins and outs of pasted on paper.

But what I am…..is so much better.

I’m the girl who bought an old farmhouse in the country that had rooms and rooms and rooms of brightly patterned walls….

…..and I removed that wallpaper from every single one.

I think that qualifies me for a wallpaper Phd. 🙂Continue reading

The Best Gray Paint Colors In the Universe

The Best Gray Paint Colors In the Universe

best gray paint colors

One day you are going to be standing in front of the paint chip section in the paint store…..paralyzed with indecision because you come to the undeniable conclusion….

…..that a gray is not always a gray.

I know….totally earth shattering.

And that sometimes a gray looks perfect in the store….so you gleefully order a gallon and rush home to paint your dining room…..

…..only to realize that it’s too pink.

Or too green.

Or too light.

Or too dark.

And you will hang your head and sigh with frustration.

That sigh is EXACTLY why I wrote this post.

Because all grays are not…..nor ever will be…..created equal.

And I’ve spent more hours painting grays on a wall than I even want to think about and along the way I’ve learned a few things.

So here….in no particular order….

….are 5 of the best gray paint colors in the universe.Continue reading

Before and After Beach House Bedroom

before and after wood wall

I finally finished the beach house bedroom.

And after every board was hung and every piece painted and every curtain sewed and hung and every pillow placed…..

….I took these pictures in the middle of a hurricane.

Hello, Arthur. 🙂

cape cod bedroom makeover

There’s so much more to the story….but before I begin….

….let take a trip back to remember where we started.

Before Arthur.

Before the winds and the rains and a gloomy horizon……when we started at the very beginning.

We arrived at the Cape two weeks ago to sunny weather and blue skies and a bedroom that looked like this.Continue reading

Three Simple Tips For Better Photos

Three Simple Tips For Better Photos

Fireplace_With_Baskets

Someone wise once said, “Photography takes a moment to learn and a lifetime to master.”

Truer words were never spoken.

When I started this blog I was taking pictures with a camera that you threw away.

Remember those?

And while my throw-away camera was perfect for vacation and documenting various important events and the occasional picture of the cats…..

…I realized that it wasn’t going to cut it for blogging.

So I began to teach myself with hours and hours of practice and lots of trial and error….

….specializing in the error department. 🙂

And after a year and a half of learning and growing and trying…..

…..I wanted to share a little of what I’ve learned and share three simple tips for better photos.Continue reading
